I assume that Dienhart would agree with my assessment of the two actors mentioned in the subject line. This list is a JOKE! I love UM and hope that RR will take Michigan to new heights of football glory, but Tressel is the best coach in the Big 10 right now (I just threw up in my mouth...ugh). And how in the world is Ferentz # 1 ?!?! I just read Dienhart's "explanation" for why Ferentz is #1 on his list. According to Tom, a REALLY good coach fields a sh*tty team for three years, then magically turns them around to a glorious 9-4 season. This is MUCH better than consistently winning 10+ games and playing for 3 MNC's in 8 years like Tressel has managed. Worst list ever...

"the measure of a man is how he handles adversity." Maybe this is a ranking of how much adversity each coach has faced in his day, because it has little to do with how their teams have performed.

Maybe they meant to rank the coaches by the number of times their sons were arrested. After Ferentz's son was arrested last night he definitely has to be in the lead...

Ferentz coaches at IOWA, who wants to go to IOWA. Man I am not an athlete but I am in college and as a college student IOWA has absolutly no appeal. He still gets players and had a good year last year when they were pegged to be at the bottom of the big ten. Let's face it we are lucky he doesnt coach at a prominent school. As for Rich Rod, he is a better coach then tressel . He devloped a new offensive scheme for god's shake. He took a program that was nothing, literally, to a program that had to win one game to get into the national championship. I can't argue with sweater vest's record and what he has done at Ohio state, but he is at Ohio state. Not Iowa. He also has had scandle following him ever since he has arrived on the scene. Ohio state has better talent, more talent, and a better appeal then IOWA. Ohio State has had violations. Record wise Tressel is better. Getting the most out of the players its Ferentz. Best up and coming coach, returning to past prominence is RR. He will acomplish this and past what LLoyd had. Its a ballsie article but I dont think its to far off.

Before he got hired at UM, everybody had him in their top-10 coaches in American list. Even harsh critics from last year, like Fiutak at CFN. I am not surprised he's still considered one of the best in the game, although, I guess, a little surprised after all the see still high on people's lists. Looks like they gave him a Mulligan.

In JoePa's case, I'm not sure how much stock to put into his past accomplishments. He undoubtedly has been a fantastic coach over the course of his 40-year career, but I think it's safe to say he's no longer at the top of his game. Tressel, OTOH, seems very much in his coaching prime.

I guess he is an old sea captain. Suddenly I envision him with old sea captain sideburns and a pipe, and maybe even a parrot on his shoulder that constantly blogs about Barack Obama. "Come ta Penn State me hardies! Yarrrrr!!"

Outside Big Ten country, I'd imagine that quite a few people would put RR above Tressel. The perception is that what he did at WVU was more difficult than what Tressel has done at OSU. In fact, OSU itself is regarded as something of a paper tiger by a lot of people outside our region.

OSU severely damaged both their's and the Big Ten's reputation with their performance in their two NC game losses. Tressel has waltzed through the Big Ten because he was a better coach than Lloyd Carr. That doesn't really make him a great coach: just a coach who WAS in the right place at the right time. Operative word: was.
