OT: Red Wings sign RFA Brendan Smith 2 years 2.525M
Ken Holland has signed Brendan Smith to a 2 year 2.525M contract. He was a restricted free agent. He showed flashes of brilliance along with some bonehead plays but I like the signing. Kindl used to be terrible and has come along way especially last season. Link: http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=677999&navid=nhl:topheads
Great cap hit. There's a lot of people who were chastizing him for being greedy (not on here, but elsewhere on the interwebz) that have some crow to eat.
Fixed. Thanks. Definitely was the smaller number.
*2.525 Million. I had a dyslexic roommate in college.
As of right now, only Lashoff makes less money on the blueline. If he plays to the potential they think he can, it's a steal. If he doesn't, it's not that much money and they can easily move on.
Pretty cheap. Hopefully he shows improvement from those playoffs though. Zetterberg said it best, "He creates a lot of stuff, sometimes for both teams."
Looking at the signing on Capgeek.com, here is where the numbers now sit after this signing for the next few seasons as of now:

Not much space with Andersson and Nyquist yet to be signed. Cleary and Brunner are basically out, but I'm wondering if Holland is trying to find a way to dump Sammy to give space for Cleary and the remaining RFAs.
granted he had a terrible playoff experience but he was a rookie playing the Stanley Cup Playoff. People forget that he is young and all of his mistakes are a result of his inexperience. It's good for him to gain some and get better. He has the ability to be a quality defensivemen down the road. There's always room for offensive defensivemen on the roster.
If they don't bring him back, they can either pick a young blueliner from Grand Rapids or from a UFA class of 30 year old 3rd pair guys.
Overreaction. He's better than most people you can get to replace him at this point and that's pretty cheap. He had a bad playoffs but I thought he made enough progress during the regular season to warrant a new contract. I remember when Jonathan Ericsson used to be the scapegoat in the playoffs on defense. He developed fine IMO.
He is going to be solid...gritty player. He will learn how to play the NHL game quickly. Ken the master.
