I don't know much about him except that he had a quick trigger when it came to trades with New Orleans and that he put together the Stojakovic/West/Chandler frontline, alongside Chris Paul?
Any thoughts (besides who cares about the NBA/Pistons/fire Dumars/Trey Burke/KCP)?
a little bit about him here: LINK, for those who care. Draft history is average at best with a couple of bright spots. Seems to enjoy trading, which makes sense because NO isn't a big FA market.
If Bower would have drafted Trey Burke than this is a good hire.
Typically, the coach reports to the GM, and the GM reports to the president (or owner). Here, the coach and the president are one in the same, so exactly what role with the GM be playing?
the day-to-day responsibilities of being the GM. What specifically those are, I have no clue. But he won't be the main man in charge when it comes to final say on player movement, that will reside with Van Gundy, with Bower likely controlling operational things such as scouting and financial duties of a GM. That's my best guess as to how it'll work.
My guess would be the role of whipping boy should things not go as planned.
+1 to you. I was going to post "Scapegoat" as his secondary title but whipping boy works also.
Luckily I scrolled down a little more.
Ass kisser also works.
Coffee go-getter and phoce call dialer.
"Good morning, this is Jeff Bower calling for Mr. Van Gundy. Please hold for Mr. Van Gundy".
He will be handling day to day FO operations.
Fire Bower. The guy has done nothing notable since Detroit hired him today.
(Sorry, nothing against the hire... just want to be the very first person to call for his firing.)
Of course, I was busy securing the domain name rights to my new website FireJeffBower.com . It's definitely worth a look.
You're right - I don't agree with a single one of his moves thus far. He's not accomplished one thing in his tenure with the Pistons that I know of.
I fall for this!
He is very solid. Considering Stan Van is the real decision maker and Bower's role will mostly be doing the day to day work, it's not a bad hire. They weren't going to get any home run candidates because, well, Stan is the real GM.
Bower has also been a coach, so I would imagine that was a plus for Van Gundy.
BOWER?!?!
President/Coach sets a strategy and philosophy for player acquisition.
GM executes the acquisition of players within the organizations resources.
Batshit Owner panics in 1.5 years and shitcans everyone. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Interesting move, of course. It isn't every day you go from coaching in the MAAC to the NBA, but then I think Bower has rather a lot of front office experience in the pros anyway, as I recall, so you can't say he is inexperienced certainly. I like the hire actually. The scope of his duties per the CBS piece:
"Under Van Gundy, who also works as president of basketball operations for Detroit, Bower will handle day-to-day management functions and likely spearhead negotiations with free agents and rookies, as well as helping to manage the scouting and analytics departments."
