At least when Sonny Liston "dove," you could see that a punch actually touched him. And the fact that Ali's punch was similar to Archie Moore's short right that he used to set opponents up for allowed one to suspend disbelief and call Ali a champion.
But this was terrible. It looked like Offerman pulled the punch, and the ref dove. It didn't even appear to connect, and even if it did there was not enough leverage behind it to knock down a girl in an MSU frat house.
Sadly, though, the media has found a villian du jour.

The umpire fell more because the two were pushing against each other and Offerman pushed off a bit more. Add in the surprise of a punch coming in, that'll knock him down.
Still, as an umpire, Offerman's suspension/ban is more than justified.
