OT: NHL Playoffs are wild this year

Habs taking the Leafs to Game 7 tonight with another chance for a disappointing first round exit. Caps and Pens both unable to get out of the first round. The Islanders doing annoying Islander type things. McDavid smothered and swept out of the first round by the Jets. The Avalanche looking like the best team so far through 5 games, across two rounds. The buildings in Tampa & Carolina & Nashville! Fisticuffs after what seems every single whistle... and we're only three games into the second round!

This has been a very entertaining year for NHL playoffs. It’s been good seeing fans sprinkled on here and there. I can’t wait until Detroit is back in the mix!

How in the bloody hell has Canada not confirmed that they will let the teams cross the border when the time comes? They should stop being such uncle fuckers about it.

I really want to see the Leafs win. I know a lot about waiting 54 years and it is miserable. With that said, I'd be surprised to see them win.

Hall to Boston was the perfect fit and their first line looks incredible. I still think the Avs are set up best to win it all. They have tons of speed and won't back down from anyone... I don't know if anyone can keep up with them.

Vegas-Colorado game was the most entertaining blowout I've seen in awhile. Colorado has some scary good talent.

Vegas looked completely gassed from their 7-game series.

They went full goon mode after Graves injured Jamrock on a late hit when they were already up big (arguably I thought it deserved a major penalty, refs only assessed a minor). I was kinda understanding of what Vegas was doing, up until Reaves decided to purposefully try and injure Graves. Which was right after he crossed checked the goalie in the damn head for no reason whatsoever. The dude needs to be suspended multiple games, that shit is so dirty and has no place in the league (at least what Graves did was a hockey play, even if it was ill-advised and dangerous)

Reaves deserves a suspension for the rest of the playoffs. No place for that in the NHL. Graves hit might have been a little late but like you said it was still a hockey play and I felt 2 minutes was adequate. Brown hit Graves late to the head a little while later and no call was made

Great to see the Avs bury them in game one. Let’s go Avs win the cup!

The Graves hit was late but main point of contact was the chest. Deserved the 2 he got, some could've made the case for more and I might have been okay with it but it was a hockey play, albeit late but still. The Reaves play was disgusting, he deserved the Match Penalty, I'm curious to see what his suspension is going to be. I don't think it will be "the rest of the playoffs" but it very may well exceed the length of the rest of Vegas' playoffs.

I thought that fighting (voluntarily) was allowed solely to let the players deal with this sort of thing on their own. We've seen a few examples lately where the goons just haul off and throw a sucker punch or try and drive someone into the ice. Is that also letting them deal with it on their own?

Makes no sense to me. In any other sport, fighting's forbidden, sucker punches are long suspensions and what happened tonight probably a month-long ban or more.

I think it's time to take fighting out of the game completely, like in college or in some parts of the world. I've felt this way since the '90s, when I covered some WHL and watched adult fans giddy with joy because some over-age goons who had no future in hockey beat the crap out of 16-year-olds on a regular basis. Because hockey.

I love the sport, hate the gooning. If I wanted to watch MMA, and sometimes I do, I'll watch MMA.

NHL officiating is a disaster and it is a league that blankets its skill in fake tough guy bullshit. Meanwhile the NBA has become more like soccer because it has stifled any attempt at defense and rewarded creative flopping.

Colorado looked unstoppable last night. That series is going to get right nasty, I hope it goes 7, but Vegas better get their shit together immediately or they are going to get rolled.

It was beautiful to see Crosby and Malkin skate off after their 3rd straight 1st round exit.

Heads are going to roll in Toronto. Hard to blame Dubas here, too. Guy saw where his team was lacking, went out and got a ton of grit and experience with Joe Thornton and Wayne Simmonds, whom I think plays a great but short term style of game.

Losing Tavares in the first game is huge but still! Credit to Carey Price who comes up huge again and again when he needs to but again, still! It will be an interesting summer in Toronto to say the least.

The NHL does plenty of stupid stuff to hurt themselves, but sometimes they really do get unlucky. They have a once in a lifetime opportunity to do the all-Canadian division, and Toronto wins. Edmonton has the best player in the league and finishes second. Everyone in the country is waiting and anticipating an epic series. Then both teams blow their first round series. So one of their guaranteed semifinal teams is going to be an underdog to whatever American team they face and therefore unlikely to make the Stanley Cup Final let alone win it. Winnipeg and Montreal aren't going to get nearly the ratings that Toronto and Edmonton would have, in the US or Canada.
