OT: NFL MNF Open Thread

Submitted by mGrowOld on

Can't believe this isnt up yet.  Game 1 is about halfway over (no seriously it's COMPLETELY over) as Chip Kelly is demonstrating that yes....the spread (for one game anyways) can work in the NFL and yes.....a college coach can make the jump to the NFL quite nicely thank you.

Speaking as a Browns fan it kills me to think how close we came to getting Kelly which certainly would've meant the end of this guy in Cleveland but nooooooo...

Philadelphia is closing in on 400 yards of offense. By my estimates, they've only got about 30 yards or so to go in order to reach this mark. In most regards, and as much as might be possible in the NFL, the Redskins are being thoroughly Oregon'd at the moment.

With Brandon Weeden running the show we might not see 400 yards of offense for three games.  I cannot begin to describe how excited and pumped the crowd was entering the stadium and how deflated and dissapointed everyone was leaving it.

This idiot got freaking stuck under the American flag last year during warmups.  I was there and still can't believe it....

Eagles are doing well and certainly deserve some credit, but Washington has killed themselves. RGIII has not passed well and when he has made a nice pass, his receivers are not catching them. Washington has also turned it over and gave up a safety. It seems like the Redskins have been penalized on almost every play. Not sure is Washington is playing poorly or if the Eagles are playing well.

Hard nosed, good hands, lots of locker room respect. That being said most think he is getting hear the end of his career given that he has lost whatever speed he had.

Anyone know why Brandon Graham isn't playing for Philly today?  I know he's been a bit of a disappointment, but he had a decent 2012 and you'd think he'd be out there.

I've mostly been working, but the commentary on this game is the definition of NFLAIDS in the few plays I have heard it.  Gruden is terrified, confused, and irrationally skeptical all at the same time of any offense that isn't pro-style.  He says "zone read" and "read option" like they are uncurable diseases.

by Chip Kelly was very vanilla. Pretty much consist of inside and outside zone plays with some read option sprinkled in. No variation of passing plays that would leverage from zone read PA plays at all in the 2nd half. Vick threw the ball two times in the 2nd half.

I love the idea that all these new fangled offenses just need to be "figured out," then they'll jump stop working altogether.

I have no idea how Kelly's tenure in the NFL will pan out. There are amazing college coaches that bomb in the pros (e.g., Saban) and there are coaches that do great (e.g., Harbaugh). But somehow I don't think Kelly's offense will get "figured out" and shut down in a couple of games.

Why do they continue to thrive at the college level? Why are there NFL teams that continue to find success doing similar things?

I don't see a whole lot of evidence in recent years to support the idea that modern offenses are all smoke and mirrors that can easily outsmarted and stopped.

Because college defenses simply are not athletic enough to stop it.  College DC's can figure it out all they want, but unless you've got the personnel, it won't matter.  That's really not a problem in the NFL.

I'm not suggesting that people will stop the Eagles cold, but I really doubt they will be putting up 26 first half points against anyone.  Washington made a pretty simply adjustment coming out of halftime.  They moved their safeties up about 7 yards and played a lot more press coverage.  Intent on stopping the hitches and screens, they basically dared Vick to throw downfield, and he couldn't do it.  He missed a ton of intermediate throws in the 2nd half.
