OT: NFL Conference Championships Open Thread
Also Northwestern is playing Indiana great @ home right now. Indiana up 6 with 7:00 to go...
8 minutes of real time later and the Hoosiers are up 11. (3.5 game time)
I know. Though they got it to 5 again with, maybe 2:00 or so to go. Yeah, I didn't expect the upset to happen but thought it a damn valiant effort on Northwestern's part and is more proof that Indiana is vulnerable (e.g. they "struggled" with the 1-3-1 down the stretch) or that NW realllllly isn't all that terrible when they have all their players playing.
Indiana won the game (was about a 5-7 pt margin before end of the game fouling), but I cant help but feeling that they really struggle against teams that can change the tempo. Zeller is amazing in transition, but outside of that, he loses a lot of his significance. He's dangerous on the offense side and is a decent defender, but the only thing that really makes him special is in transition. If Michigan and other teams can slow down the Hoosiers, I think they have a great shot at beating them. Assuming they knock down some shots of course.
I'm sure Jim is OT to a lot of you. He is still a Wolverine...
You're right he's still a Wolverine. Howeva, IIRC that NFL Bad Lip Reading video is eerily accurate.
But it's not. And probably won't be as long as we have Hoke. Hell probably won't ever be again since RR failed here. But it is what Ohio runs. So you're basically cheering for a system whose success will make recruits like Ohio's offensive system better ours. The only thing I really care about in the NFL right now is seeing the spread option fail and pocket passers win MVPs and Super Bowls.
They just showed the stat they were second in yards per pass. They're not a run option team. They're a passing team with a mobile quarterback. It's not new. Heck, not even to the 49ers. Steve Young. John Elway. Fran Tarkenton.
Disagree to a point. I agree that all succesful NFL teams need to throw the ball in order be actually successful, but there's a huge difference between a pocket passer who's mobile and Colin Kaepernick who can run a 4.4. And the 49ers run a fair amount of read option with Kaepernick now. How many times have we seen his huge read-option TD against the Packers on ESPN. I just don't want young kids coming up in football thinking "man, I would be a better QB/RB/WR/whatever if I played in a read option spread". I want them thinking "man, I would get a ton of yards if I played in a read-option offense, but it doesn't seem to set me up for the next level well." Pretty much the only reason why I want Chip Kelly to fail spectacularly in the NFL.
A 3 out of 4 chance of being happy.
Edit: with the odds increasing by the minute.
Because I grew up in the Bay Area and have been niner since the day I was born!
Don't forget Jonathan Goodwin and to a lesser extent Mario Manningham
I always forget goodwin went here
greatest. punter. ever.
Let's go New England Tom Brady's.
dont forget jonathan goodwin. with that said, I hope the 49ers get destroyed.
I don't want to have to listen to 14 straight days of inane blabber about two brothers facing each other in the Super Bowl.
Don't worry, if Baltimore wins, you will get only 7 days of Harbaugh vs. Harbaugh.
The rest of the air time will discuss the coronation of a murderer who is about to finish his NFL career.
My Falcons are going to do it today. I can feel it! Time to Rise Up in the ATL!
I like your faith.
Why is it Rise Up? The last time there was a "rise" in the south it didnt turn out so well.
I think the Pats would have an easier time with the Falcons. I don't like how they match up with the 49ers. But if the Pats lose to the Ravens it's all up for grabs. I'm torn between The Harbaugh brothers getting a lot of pub being cool and the fact that it'll be ALL the media talks about for two weeks being nauseating.
Two great UM Qbs from different eras.
Holy shit, was Jones open.
Any low scoring games in this year's playoffs.
Atlanta's Special K seems to only have Jock Jams volumes 1 and 2 at his disposal...and enjoys playing clips of them after every first down.
Slightly off topic but how in the Hell does Pat Shurmer fit as Chip Kelly's OC in Philly? I spent the last two years watching what Shurmer tries to pass off as an "offense" and it couldnt pssibly be more anti-spread.
Would Shurmer still be his OC? So Kelly didn't think Cleveland was good enough, but their coaches were. Strange, with a side of sting.
Talk about blindsided.
That security guard hit reminded me about the one on Charlie Weis. Wasn't he hurt during a game against Michigan?
Holding them to a FG might have saved this game. 49ers seem to struggle at the start the week after playing great.
Well, there is this - Julio Jones still has about 16 times as many yards of offense as the 49ers do as of this particular moment.
From when it was 100 to 1.
Edit: but it's going back in the other direction.
Of course, the Falcons have already displayed an ability to blow leads. I fully expect the Niners to comeback in this game.
But they look like the 49ers against Seattle after everyone thought they were unbeatable when they stuck it to the Pats.
i can't for the life of me figure out how he and aikman became fox's "premier" broadcasting team.
Not great, but not annoying. But the Joe Buck mythology boggles me. And he's even said he doesn't care that much about football. Onside ring they have Gus Johnson now it's a crime.
This week's episode: Making sourdough toast.
w/i special guests: the 49er secondary.
the u had a pretty good line of rb's for a few years
Go Falcons. The Bay Area is too damn spoiled with their sports teams!
Score some pts and let their D rest and regroup.
The fact that committed West Coast guys like Harbaugh and Roman are willing to incorporate spread concepts, coupled with the fact that Borges/Hoke were forced into running it for Denard, give me hope that we may still see some of it in the future at Michigan. I mean, the team already knows how to run it
Pretty female parts
Man Davis is a tough handle.
And the Falcons - to the surprise of absolutely no one who watches football - are about to let the 49ers back into this game.
of last week's ATL-SEA game, only SF decided not to wait until the 4th quarter to mount the comeback. Matty Ice INT definitely in play here.
This episode: Southern Fried Falcon.
Special Guests: The Atlanta Falcon secondary
Named Vernon Davis. He's kind of good. The Falcons should try covering him.
Do the Falcons get 6 timeouts in the second half if they dont use them in the first half?
But they do get a merit badge for conservation from the BSA.
Where Teddy be at?
Do Atlanta fans still call Matt Ryan "Matty Ice"?
Stupidest nickname in the history of the NFL.
Rmember, It is Atlanta. NASCAR fans love their Natty Ice.
He only has 2 catches on the year; one last week. Pretty much a punt returner and ATL ain't be punting much today.
He had a nice fair catch in the first half!
...they may be calling him Matty INT.
Atlanta's new game plan: "guys lets make sure the other team wins"
Wow. That roughing the passer call. The NFL has become a joke.
Why all these games are ending up in the 30's and 40's.
They have gone too far slanting the rules to the offense.
Put a skirt on them Goodell, put a skirt on them. He's already getting what he wanted with 90% of plays being passes, games averaging over 60 points, and no defense.
That roughing call looked pretty paltry.
Apparently both teams bet against themselves.
...both teams are trying to throw the game to avoid SB embarrassment at the hands of the AFC Champs.
FOX should change the fade-in/fade-out to circus music for the rest of this one?
THE SECOND they lost it last season.
I chose the Lakers the second the Heat won the championship last season, and chose the Tigers to win it after they lost it last season.
Wow Douglass biffed that one terribly, fell down on an easy catch and then didnt even complete the process.
Somebody .Gif Harbaugh's reaction STAT
p.s. That was a catch (my humble opinion). Like Peirera (spelling?) said, the ball "moving" is poor terminology and always has been; the ball will most always move in some way. He kept his hand on the ball in a possession-like manner. It'd be hard to overturn if already called a catch, anyway.
harbaugh went bat shit crazy after that call!
I guess the NFL front office wants to see the Falcons in the Super Bowl? I imagine the Patriots will get the same treatment, as they have for years.
Yeah, I think the NFL wanted the 49ers (though I don't think they did anything to facilitate it). Either they get the Harbowl or they get New England trying to reach similar atmosphere. Falcons-Ravens was the NFL's "ugh" match-up.
After that review, its official - I have no idea what constitutes a catch in the NFL.
I WANT IT NOW!
I WANT CAKE NOW!!
I WANT IT NOW!!!
Harbaugh wants cake now, I don't blame him though that didn't look like a catch.
Ive seen the same plays get called a no catch all season.
NFL catch interpretations are ruining the game. Atl should have been facing a 4th down decision. Instead, the refs hand them the opportunity to win the game.
hahahah down goes Atlanta.
Turn out the lights the party's over.
Now you can have some cake Jimmy.
Would the fewer seconds and removal of the risk of a block be worth turning a 4 point game to a 2 point game?
Hope you all can find it in you to root for harbaugh cause every former and current player is rooting for him. They are the Michigan men!
Sorry. I think I've made my stance clear, but I just cannot root for an offensive system that glorifies Ohio's offensive system and makes ours look more and more archaic (because, you know, it is).
Yep. Because obviously there's only one way to play football.
I can't imagine that Brady or Mesko will be rooting hard for Harbaugh if the Patriots win their next game. Andy Moeller and Teryl Austin (though he didn't play for M) probably won't be wishing Harbaugh a lot of luck if the Ravens win, either.
Not all former/current players and "Michigan Men" are rooting for JH.
This Michigan Man is rooting for Brady and the Space Emperor.
You'd have been rooting for Atlanta as a lifelong 49er fan because he's a Michigan Man?
Thank God for Tom Brady.
I'm a Browns fan so without him I'd be forced to choose rooting for a coach who left Cleveland and became wildly successful or a team that left Cleveland and became wildly successful.
yeah. I see a lot of NE trying to iso Hernandez or Vereen on Lewis.
Who do I root for of its brady vs harbaugh?
Brady + Space Emeror > Jim Harbaugh + cake
No recruit ever says "I want to go to Michigan to play quarterback so someday I can be a Super Bowl winning coach." But they do say "I want to go and be Tom Brady and win 4* Super Bowls."
*if he's there and we're talking who should win it.
Hopefully the last of the day
Lloyd drops everything I throw to him in Madden on the All-Pro setting
eat cake, do blow and club hobos.
Post could have been interpreted a couple of ways:
Stop throwing the ball to Lloyd, Brady.
Stop throwing the ball to Lloyd Brady.
Either way, it eliminates the dropsies. Just tryin' to help out a fellow MGoBlogger with EA.
Now can I haz some cake?
EDIT: If the answer is still no, can you point me to the punch and pie social?
Would be at the Spring Game.
Punch & Pie or Ice Cream TBA.
Alfonzo Dennard was a great 7th round pick for New England. He and Hightower are exactly what they needed, and 7th round is a steal.
good thing Flacco is still asleep
chances are pretty high that the NE K will win NFL player of the year, right?
Argh, wasted time.
26 seconds. Should have thrown 2-3x in the endzone. Running the ball and then no TO - aweful.
Brain cramp that could cost them in the end.
NE could have had a couple more plays and Brady could have broken his leg with that Hong Kong Phooey slide.
Titus Young is a lock to win this Man of the Year Award.
High hits are only called against Baltimore now?
It was in the chest.
Are you legally blind? Dude hit him square in the chest. The exact way a tackle should be made every single time.
EDIT: Then Pollard nails that guy in the worst head to head shot I've seen in a while to cause that fumble. Yeah, the refs were clearly in favor of the Patriots...... /s
That Patriot was a runner, so there's no "defenseless receiver" involved, and the hit was legal.
Hope that guy will be OK.
I thought any head-to-head was now illegal period?
Not necessarily. If it's incidental contact, then no penalty. If the defender led with his helmet, then it should have been, and the NFL will probably fine him. I guess I could be wrong, but it didn't strike me as a penalty at the time. If the defender isn't targeting the ball carrier's helmet, but then he lowers his helmet, what is the defender supposed to do?
didn't have any effect on the Ravens' TD drive, and gave up an opportunity to score.
But if NE doesn't find a way to generate pass pressure, it may be a long second half.
Does New England have any pass routes deeper than 6 yards downfield? I feel like I'm watching a replay of the Michigan/Iowa game this year.
This game might be over.
He's definitely on his way to the bat cave either way.
Great defense beats great offense. The consistently scary defensive teams are going to the Super Bowl by holding a team scoreless for a half and squashing Brady's offense.
And unless the Pats start hitting on their drafts, ON DEFENSE, Brady's window is closing fast.
Gronk is out, Woodhead barely played. Talib injury was huge. Wasted play before half and 35 yard line punts were dumb moves.
Respectfully disagree. What Brady needs are playmakers at the WR position more than anything. The big difference in this game was Bolden's ability to create separation and get open for deep balls. Brady has Welker and........
They need speed on the outside. Like they used to have when they had Moss.
The problem was Talib got hurt and the Patriots need a guy like Julio Jones. If anything they need to draft a wide receiver that's a deep threat. It doesn't help that the teams best receiving option is out hurt. Yes, the defense could use some work. But that's not the main issue at all. It's injuries and the lack of a burner that lost this game for the Patriots. Gronk makes up for that lack with his size, which then helps Hernandez as well. But, when Gronk gets hurt again and again, then teams can cover Hernandez better. That leaves the Patriots less than desirable on offense because Brady can only make up for his lack of playmakers so much.
Edit: The experts agree and have the Patriots taking Tavon Austin.
Brady needs two TDs and a two point conversion in 11 minutes.
Not out of it, but not looking good.
And goodnight New England, Baltimore has played some inspired red zone defense.
With the pat offense since Moss left was their passing game is just short passes, add that with little running game and an improved but not great D, it just goes to show you how good Brady and Belichick are. They have no threat for a deep ball.
Well considering they have not won a super bowl in the 8 years since they got caught cheating and still have a lot of talent some would argue the pair might be overachieving. Though you could say they are only underachieving compared to absurdly high standards they created so it goes both ways.
O.K. Jimmy, go get ya' some cake.
GET IT NOW!
And any prayer is snuffed out
Ray Lewis is such a drama queen.
How many hours of Ira glorifying and making excuses for Ray Lewis?
I still love Jim Harbaugh.
A badass coach, who used to be a badass quarterback coached by not one BUT TWO badass coaches (Bo and DITKA), has now turned a team coached by a former badass linebacker from nobodies into possibly the next badass Super Bowl champions.
I wish Harbaugh had Hoke's love for Michigan...my GAWD, the thought of him coming back to coach at AA for the next 20 years or so...just devastating. Oh, well.
