OT: Musburger makes fun of Michigan fan...
Just wondering if anyone else though it was strange how Musburger and the other announcer were making fun of a Michigan fan for looking like a mobster (or something like that...I forget the exact exchange). The strange thing was, the kid wasn't dressed in costume, wasn't trying to draw attention to himself....he was just a college kid wearing glasses. It's not a big deal, but I'm curious if anyone else though it was a dick move for a few broadcasters to single out and make fun of a college kid for the way he looks.

Musburger routinely spends the entire broadcast hung up on personal interest stories (Carroll during the Rose Bowl is a prime example) and stupid anecdotes. He's usually pretty biased, too (the Rose Bowl would be another great example).
The guy is losing his touch.
Edit: He fits in perfectly at ESPN, which is becoming chock full of subjectivity.

I thought it was hysterical when CJ Lee puked in the trash can. Then the put the trash can directly in front of Erin Andrews and had her report on it.
When Musburger made the comment that CJ Lee was going back on the floor "absent his pregame dinner" I thought that was inappropriate but funny nonetheless.

Every time I hear Musberger, all I think about was how he was on Ohio States nuts when A.J. Hawk was there. "A.J. Hawk and the Buckeyes!" He is a Michigan hater too...

I remember being annoyed at how often he would refer to Anthony Thomas as the A-Train during games. Musburger would excitedly shout A-TRAIN! every chance he got.
I think he even called Mallet "Big Tex" about a 100 times in one of the 2007 games.

Musburger's play calling consists of stretching out the players last name until the play is over and then quickly saying the yardage or accomplishment.
For instance:
"Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa(meanwhile Mike Hart is breaking through the first line of defenders, dragging a linebacker four yards downfield and finally getting tackled by five more Spartans after a twelve yard gain)rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrtttttttttttttttttttttttttttt for a first down."
Rose Bowl:
"Sancccccccccchhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzz, touchdown Trojans!"
So yeah, were talking about this guy.

Sports announcers in general (with exceptions, i.e. Rod Allen and Mario Impemba) are loud, obnoxious, and speak as if they are an authority on basically every subject on the face of the Earth. Brent Musburger, however, is a god among mere mortals when it comes to these attributes. There are few sportscasters that equal Musburger's ability to spew out idiotic content with no relevance to the game except of course, on Fox national broadcasts.
Unfortunately, the trend of biased/irritating/stupid/pretty much unbearable sportscasters is likely to continue. Major TV networks know that big sports fans will watch their team or important games no matter how much they want to throttle the people providing commentary, while those who do not care about the game very much are entertained by the various interest stories and other content (ESPN turning College Football games into something generally seen on the Food Network, for instance) provided by the commentators.

No one hate Musberger like I do (see my signature below, which has been unchanged for months). By thy way, he was just comparing that kid to Groucho Marx because of his thick-framed glasses. I think it was pretty harmless, and probably only about the 200th most stupid thing he said tonight.

Kid really did look like a young Marx brother. When not in costume, they were a handsome enough bunch of guys. Plus, they made a fortune and held onto their money through the Depression, which was at least as hard then as now, and were famous for their attractive women and glamorous life. So there are a lot worse people to have been compared to.
Who knew that Musberger was old enough to have partied with Groucho, though? Geezer must be ancient.

The thing I can't figure out is why he even has a job. I have yet to encounter anyone who actually likes his account of a game, his style, his personality, ...anything.
The thing that drives me crazy is the self-created melodrama. He does some limited research, then finds some way to take that little bit of work and rehash it a thousand times.
My biggest gripe is Musberger essentially campaigning for Nebraska's share of the national title in '97 (well 1/2/98 to be exact). The game was just LOUSY with Tennessee rolling over and dying. Whether it was a ratings grab, boredom, or just his wrong-headed opinion he turned the broadcast into the "Tom Osborne is retiring and thus deserves a national championship" show. Ugh.
As to MH20's comment about "losing his touch" I respond by saying, "What touch?"

I just can't understand how anyone can employ that miserable bum. The networks must not understand how their broadcasters have come to detract from the game for their fans -- there are damn few out there I can even tolerate, much less enjoy. I'm old and a curmudgeon, but you can't tell me that there are any play-by-play guys out there now equal to Van Patrick, Keith Jackson, Bill Flemming, Chris Schenkel, and a bunch of other old-timers. Hell, the most obnoxious of that bunch was better than the best today. Al Michaels? Come on -- his best day was 1980 Olympic hockey and that sucked. The sex pervert, what's his name -- never had a good day. I'm not sure when the play-by-play guys decided they needed to be the center of attention, but watching and listening to games has suffered. Anyone have a worst of the worst nominee?

the guys gets his bandwagon for whatever team is winning and as noted above he loves nicknames. Big Kat, A Train. He says the names in an almost orgasmic way.
