OT - Mr. Robot

This one snuck by me for almost a year.  I heard about the Golden Globe win, but I chalked it up to a hot take win like Shakepeare in Love at the Oscars.  After all, this is the USA Network, the people behind such modern classics as "In Plain Sight" and "Burn Notice."  No way this is legit.

Wrong.  Very Wrong.  This show is top notch from the jump.  For those not fully aware, Mr. Robot is a computer hacker based drama that combines very current subject matter with a throw back retro feel with the title sequence graphics and the uninhibited use of Christian Slater(subtly brilliant).  In wine lingo, this is a vintage Fincher with notes of Kubrick and Spike Jones.

I highly recommend this show if you have not watced it yet.  I am only through epsiode 7 and I am very hooked.  For those that still subscribe to nasty, filthy, money grubbing, bastard-child bundled cable services, all of season 1 is On-Demand right now and season 2 starts in July.  Give it a binge if you have the chance.

Like others, I've recommended this show to others too - my wife pointed it out to me about a month ago and I burned through what was available On Demand in nearly one sitting. Pretty solid offering and pretty unique for USA Network, the same network that once lined up game show reruns for about five hours straight every single day for years, although to be fair, "Name That Tune", "Press Your Luck", "The $25,000 Pyramid" and others were pretty solid even in syndication.

It's no great shakes for sure, but it's competent and it's entertaining.  My issue with it is that every episode is basically the same thing over and over and they weren't able to make the slight variations interesting enough to hold my interest after the fourth season.

Boiled down, there are worse ways to spend an hour.  Plus, Bruce Campbell is God and Gabrielle Anwar is stunning.

Ditto... seasons 1-3 were entertaining. After that, the ahem, template, used by the producers for each show became transparent. The product placement in later seasons was nauseating as well. Listening to Weston voice over the handling characteristics of a Hyundai Genesis during a get away just made the show an infomercial for the advertisers. Sometimes I just want to be entertained. Girls, check. Cars, check. Explosions, check. Burn Notice was just fine early on.

I watched the first 4 or so episodes of Banshee. Way too over the top and ridiculous for me with the guy beating the shit out of everybody at every opportunity when he needs to keep a low profile.

I can't really get past flat out retarded plot points, and when he beats the shit out of the prize fighter, that would immediately go viral and the guy they are hiding from would know where he was within a day.

My roommate and I watched it last fall. The acting's great, music and atmosphere is solid, and the scene-to-scene writing was good. My roommate's a software engineer and confirmed the show did a decent job meeting the minimum requirement for coherent tech jargon, not an easy thing for pop entertainment.

But he and I both called numerous plot points before they happened. And some of the disparate plotlines seemed to strain to tie together. For me at least that's what kept it from being a truly excellent show. But it's definitely worth a watch.

that turned a little unrealistic towards the end of the season. Started off great, though. I'm intruiged to see how they continue the story in season 2 after the way seson 1 ended. Any guesses?

I wish he would have just stayed a small time vigilante hacker like in the first episode, and they could have developed new targets for him each show or two, or had side plots based off each new "vilain".

While I had a lot of fun with Burn Notice, mainly for the fact that is has the GOD Bruce Campbell, and it was a fun silly procedural, Mr Robot is on a whole other level.  Rami Malek and Christian Slater are fantastic in it.  It is a total mind fuck, with Fight Club mixed with great cyber punk vibes flowing off it.  Two of my favorite show out right now are both focused on computer hacker and conspiracy.  Mr Robot and Person of Interest are both great watches for anyone who enjoys that genre.
