OT - Motorola Droid

Submitted by captainbatman on
I'm considering buying a Motorola Droid. I'm not terribly handy with the touchscreen keyboards, so I like that this one has a physical keyboard and I like the Android operating system a lot. Does anyone own a Droid? What do you think of it so far? Any regrets on your purchase?

I have a droid, I'm on it right now, I love it. The hardware is pretty good, but the best part as people have said is android itself. The maps navigation is awesome, I didn't get navigation in my new car cuz I have a gps on the phone. Get the car mount, its worth it. Can't say enough about the phone. In terms of the keyboard, I have rather large thumbs, but I can use the physical keyboard just fine, and both digital keyboards are great, as is the predictive/known typing. Great phone, amazing os

The Droid seems pretty awesome. My good friend has one and he loves it. I've gotten to play around with it and I'm thoroughly impressed. Some people swear by the phone to the point that they knock the iPhone. Here in Boston, people tend to complain about the coverage they get with their iPhone, so the Verizon Droid is a good alternative. Apparently there are issues with the Droid email system connecting with the network or something, something the Blackberry does with no problem. For one thing, while not the most important feature, the camera on the Droid is terrific. The camera resolution is rated at 5.0 megapixels, but that's just a number. I can tell you that the the camera's quality seems to be very good, plus it has flash. That basically eliminates the need to carry around a digital camera. While many cameras today are rated at 7.1 mp, my Sony digital camera from like 5 years ago (before the huge drop in price and further improvement in technology, goddammit) is 5.1 mp--there are smudges, but the picture quality is pretty good. When I got it, it was one of the best cameras around, and the guy at Best Buy said that anything above 4.0 is good.

FWIW, my cousin got a droid and he felt just like you did. He wanted it because of the physical keyboard. The problem is the keyboard is very small and very flat. Even in all the reviews they say it's a bad design. Needless to say he uses the touchscreen now.

I will be in the market this summer for a new phone. I currently have an LG Env2 (hate it) and had a Blackberry previously. Really want an iphone as I am converting across the board to Apple equipment. The issue is I am with Verizon and I like their service because its fairly strong everywhere I've ever gone whereas AT&T can be very spotty. I've heard rumors of iphone going to Verizon, anyone hear any confirmation? If not trying to decide if its worth going to AT&T or staying with Verizon and getting another phone. Is Droid the best phone available? Or how about others like the Palm phone? Does droid have an ability to sync with itunes or with MAC in general? If anyone had an iphone and now has a droid which do you prefer? What are the strengths of each phone?

I bit the bullet and bought two of these bad boys for me and my wife. They'd actually sold out of them at the local Verizon store, but I get to pick them up today. The cool thing was that the local store was able to give me a better deal than I was able to find online for them. Also, Placentasaurus, if you could hook me up with an invite to Google Voice, that would be sweet.

Just saw a news story last night that sources say Apple will be announcing shortly 2 new iphones. One will come out this summer for AT&T customers, the other will begin to be manufactured in September with no release date yet for Verizon customers. Its going to be hard to wait that long...

There are always a TON of rumors about Apple, especially new products, and the "Verizon iphone" rumor has been around for 2 years now. If you really prefer Verizon, and don't mind waiting to see if the rumor is true, then you should wait. I've been using Macs for over 20 years, have had AT&T (of some flavor) for almost 10 years, and an iphone for 2. I've had relatively little trouble with AT&T in that time, but I think their recent network issues are a result of them titanically underestimating the number of iphones Apple would sell, and the insane amount of data bandwidth users are eating up. There's an obvious reason for that however. There are SO many apps, and so much to do on these phones (real web browsing, visual voicemail, etc.) that it's put a strain on their network that they are now just getting a handle on. Verizon's network would have crashed like the Hindenburg in a similar scenario IMO. If you have a Mac, and like itunes, the seamlessness of the iphone absolutely cannot be beat. The current iphone has an unmatched screen, battery life, app selection, and IMO user interface. Other competitors make nice phones too, some with physical keyboards (which may be important to you) other with different OS's with varying degrees of sophistication. There are limitations to the iphone (and AT&T) but they pale in comparison to the benefits for me. I'd suggest waiting a bit longer (May-June) to see what gets released, then decide.

I completely understand why the iPhone appeals to some people. It is a sharp phone, but it never felt right for me. The phones are about the same size, but the Droid screen is larger. That wasn't the selling point for me though - a tech spec pissing contest can help you differentiate, but they are both great phones. To me, it was down to how it felt in my hand. How intuitive the OS was for me. The Droid just felt better and seemed more natural to me. I'd give them both a spin and see which feel like more of a fit for you. I've heard negative things about the AT&T network in town, but having never used it, I can't say if it is accurate or not. So far, Verizon is solid, even in my half-basement.

I have the Droid Eris. Great phone overall. Took a bit of time and creativity to get the email app to work with GroupWise, though. The touch screen keypad is pretty good. I would recommend.
