OT: Lions - R Spielman Out in MN

Rick Spielman is out in Minnesota.  I think he is an elite GM - is there a chance he could be in the Lion's draft room this spring?  Tough to replace Brad Holmes as GM at this point, but there has to be a place for him in the Lion's front office.

Unless you have a once every decade defense, the NFL is so much about getting the QB position right. Get that right and the rest falls into place a lot easier where you can make consistent runs to the playoffs and maybe one or two of those runs you go all the way. Hitching your wagon to Kirk Cousins for $40 million a year is a bold strategy, cotton.

Unless he has an established and functional relationship with Brad Holmes, it seems like a recipe for disaster to bring in another GM-like substance to "help" with the draft.   They hired Holmes for one reason, so it seems like he deserves the space to do his job without another cook in the kitchen.

And beyond that, I'm not sure I want another voice in the room given how well last year's draft class seems to be doing for the Lions.

Holmes was brought in to nail the draft via his scouting expertise, and so far it feels like the 2021 class breaks down like:

Hits:

OT Sewell

DT McNeill

WR St. Brown

Trending up:

DT Onwuzurike

CB Melifonwu

Tough season but played a lot:

LB Barnes

Didn't play much/at all:

HB Jefferson

Seems like it's been a really good class to my eye, hope they can build with 2022.

If there is good fit character (humble and hungry) and personality-wise, the Lions could stand to be the place where front office people go to resurrect careers ala Alabama with their assistant coaches. Holmes has done excellent in his first year with the draft and Stafford trade. It would need to be his call.

I'm sure he'll get another chance, just not with us right now - we don't need him enough to disrupt the front office.

NFL recycles people all the time - it's like Daryl Rogers "what do you have to do to get fired around here?" - many coaches and front office people get canned and find themselves in the next town.
