OT: It was a confusing night if you’re a Wolverine/Red Wings Fan
I know a lot of you are Michigan and DRW fans (like me) and thus still have a hatred for the Avalanche since old rivalries die hard, but…
The Avs have 3 Wolverines on the roster (Compher, Cogliano, J Johnson) and Compher scored 2 goals tonight to make it a 2-2 game. A former Red Wing named Darren Helm scored the game winner with 6 seconds left to send the Avs to the next round.
I live in Metro Denver now and still tell myself I’m not rooting for the Avs but it’s great to see these guys have a big night. Hopefully in the next couple years the Wings will be back in the hunt for Lord Stanley.
Hey, I'll root for Helmer no matter where he plays.
Definitely conflicted but I keep telling myself these aren’t those Avs and its hard to root against a team with 3 M guys and a former long time Red Winger.
That said I hope the Oilers win it all. McDavid is amazing and the more of him I get to see the better.
I'm in metro Denver too; up north...
But Ted Lindsay, Steve Yzerman, Gordie Howe, Vladimir Konstantinov, Nicklas Lidstrom, and Chris Osgood could all suit up for the fucking Avs and be coached by Red Berenson and I still wouldn't root for them.
Fuck that Peter McNab too. For those not in the know, that cocksucker went into the crowd, on his skates, to beat up some fans before the Malice at the Palace was even a thing.
Fuck The Avs🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕
Happy for all of the former Wolverines.
Go Blue 🏒🏒🏒
Avs to their first conference final since 2002.
We know how that one went.
Crazy stat: 27 of the 31 other teams had been to a Conference Final in the meantime. Avs drought in that regard was the third longest in the league!
The other 4 teams - Florida (1996), Columbus (never), Toronto (2002), Seattle (never).
In my head, the Avs made the conference finals last year and it just didn't count because of the wacko divisions, but I forgot that Vegas/Col was actually in the second round. It's crazy that 2002 was the last year for them (Although I'm staring down the barrel of 2009 for the wings).
I remember we couldn't watch the first period of game 7 2002, but my dad updated me each time the wings scored and it was just so exciting to be up 4-0 so quick.
I was at a Blue Jays/Tigers game at Comerica at the same time as Game 7.
Both started at 7:00. There was a cheer from the crowd every time the Red Wings scored - and there were 4 by the early 2nd inning. It all happened so quick!
I also find the blue numerals on their jerseys confusing. They're supposed to be black.
I always had a rule about rooting for a city’s teams if you’re not from there: as long as they’re not rivals with your OG teams it’s cool. I’m moving to Denver too and this will be hard haha, although I must admit I’m not a big pro hockey fan (I only watch the wings when they are in the playoffs) so I might make an exception.
If only the Rox could have kept the early momentum going, Denver would quietly be one of the best sports cities right now!
Agreed. I definitely root for Nuggets, Broncos, and Rockies. Very excited to see what the Broncos can do now that Russ is cooking. But those GD Avs…
I missed the rivals part at first- I was like, I've been in Chicago for 10 years and outside of baseball (I don't feel the rivalries as strongly there) and weirdly the Bulls- I just can't do it for the other two.
I've been in Fort Collins for 25 years but have never been able to get on board with the teams out here. I tried with the Broncos when they had Griese but that didn't last. I could never with the Avs just due to history.
I'll root for the Rox (and go to quite a few matinee games as my office is 5 blocks away) -- but not when the Tigers are in town every few seasons. I'll also root for the Rapids.
But never the Avs.
The 30 for 30 looks like it might settle your confusion with a good walk down memory lane.
I know! Can’t wait to watch it.
“Beat them.”
Darren Helm is still playing? Good for him!! He's so old* that he played in his prime for the Wings - and won a Cup with them!
(*He's actually not that old, but it was a fun post!)
I had the same thought at looked it up after he scored. What’s crazy is he isn’t that old. He’s 35! I thought he was going to be 40 at least.
35 is young!! He might as well being wearing diapers. Which, coincidentally, is mandatory wardrobe for most all 'Lanche players! Heyoooo
I always go checkout the videos about the Wings-Avs rivalry when I wanna see world class players mixed with pure vitriol.
Well, I'm really looking forward to this when the full feature drops:

Hint: It's Unrivaled- the E:60 Documentary on the Wings/Avs of the 90s/early 2000's.
Definitely will check this out...Mike Vernon gave Patty Roy the business!!! :-D
Vernon bitch slapped that fucking bitch.
There was a lot of Avs blood on the ice at the Joe that night.
Helm all day every day!
I can root for the players while I still hope the Avs lose in soul crushing fashion right?
GoBlue-Yeah, good to see former Michigan hockey players do well
GoWings-Screw the Avs now and forever
No! Never root for the Avs or any team coached by Urban Meyer.
I root for DPJ on the browns… I’ll root for any professional athlete from Michigan no matter where they go. I know the browns aren’t my team’s rival, I’m a lions fan, but I did work in Ohio for a decade and grew to hate anything Cleveland.
I can root for individual players and still want a team to lose. I don't see myself ever saying "hey, it'd be great if Colorado won...."
Happy for Helmer though....
Go Avs :)
edit- downvoting someone for supporting a team you don't like is pussy shit. It's not like I'm a Spartan fan on here.
I'm downvoting you for 'pussy shit'.
That’s funny … an Avs fan calling someone else a pussy,
Avs fan
Yep...a fanbase made up of Californian expats that weren't content with fucking up their own state so they all moved to Colorado to fuck up that state too.
I was born in Colorado, dipshit.
The thing is - St. Louis is easy to hate as well. Their fans made me root for the Avs for the first time ever. Racist attacks and death threats against Nazem Kadri were disgraceful - and unsurprising from them. Glad StL lost.
Haven't watched hockey in years. Helm is still around?
Two teams remaining in the playoffs have 3 Wolverines! Rangers have Motte, Copp, and Trouba.
I don't hate these Avs. That rivalry was unique in that it was about that team not the franchise. The hate was between those players, and except for a few guys in management they're all gone now.
