OT: It was a confusing night if you’re a Wolverine/Red Wings Fan

Submitted by WichitanWolverine on May 27th, 2022 at 11:45 PM

I know a lot of you are Michigan and DRW fans (like me) and thus still have a hatred for the Avalanche since old rivalries die hard, but…

The Avs have 3 Wolverines on the roster (Compher, Cogliano, J Johnson) and Compher scored 2 goals tonight to make it a 2-2 game. A former Red Wing named Darren Helm scored the game winner with 6 seconds left to send the Avs to the next round.

I live in Metro Denver now and still tell myself I’m not rooting for the Avs but it’s great to see these guys have a big night. Hopefully in the next couple years the Wings will be back in the hunt for Lord Stanley.

Definitely conflicted but I keep telling myself these aren’t those Avs and its hard to root against a team with 3 M guys and a former long time Red Winger.

That said I hope the Oilers win it all. McDavid is amazing and the more of him I get to see the better.

I'm in metro Denver too; up north...

But Ted Lindsay, Steve Yzerman, Gordie Howe, Vladimir Konstantinov, Nicklas Lidstrom, and Chris Osgood could all suit up for the fucking Avs and be coached by Red Berenson and I still wouldn't root for them.

Fuck that Peter McNab too.  For those not in the know, that cocksucker went into the crowd, on his skates, to beat up some fans before the Malice at the Palace was even a thing.

Avs to their first conference final since 2002.

We know how that one went.

Crazy stat: 27 of the 31 other teams had been to a Conference Final in the meantime.  Avs drought in that regard was the third longest in the league!

The other 4 teams - Florida (1996), Columbus (never), Toronto (2002), Seattle (never).

In my head, the Avs made the conference finals last year and it just didn't count because of the wacko divisions, but I forgot that Vegas/Col was actually in the second round.  It's crazy that 2002 was the last year for them (Although I'm staring down the barrel of 2009 for the wings).

I remember we couldn't watch the first period of game 7 2002, but my dad updated me each time the wings scored and it was just so exciting to be up 4-0 so quick.

I always had a rule about rooting for a city’s teams if you’re not from there: as long as they’re not rivals with your OG teams it’s cool. I’m moving to Denver too and this will be hard haha, although I must admit I’m not a big pro hockey fan (I only watch the wings when they are in the playoffs) so I might make an exception.

If only the Rox could have kept the early momentum going, Denver would quietly be one of the best sports cities right now!

Darren Helm is still playing?  Good for him!!  He's so old* that he played in his prime for the Wings - and won a Cup with them!

(*He's actually not that old, but it was a fun post!)

I root for DPJ on the browns… I’ll root for any professional athlete from Michigan no matter where they go. I know the browns aren’t my team’s rival, I’m a lions fan, but I did work in Ohio for a decade and grew to hate anything Cleveland.

I can root for individual players and still want a team to lose. I don't see myself ever saying "hey, it'd be great if Colorado won...."

Happy for Helmer though....

The thing is - St. Louis is easy to hate as well.  Their fans made me root for the Avs for the first time ever.  Racist attacks and death threats against Nazem Kadri were disgraceful - and unsurprising from them.   Glad StL lost.

I don't hate these Avs. That rivalry was unique in that it was about that team not the franchise. The hate was between those players, and except for a few guys in management they're all gone now.
