OT I guess--Why ND will lose every game

http://southbendblarney.com/2009/05/14/why-the-irish-will-lose-every-ga… Funniest College Football thing I've read in a while. And written by an Irish fan. The important part: "Sept. 12 at Michigan – Michigan may be down, but Rich-Rod is a proven winner in college. Blue’s D coordinator simply replays his game plan from last year’s Syracuse loss. Tate Forcier, despite his scrawny arms, resembles the second coming. Michigan’s defense reintroduces itself to Jimmy Clausen, having missed him a great deal since sacking him 50 times in 2007." Unfortunately, not as funny as most of the other games.

I must say that, while this does sound good to a Blue fan like myself, it seems a little bit fantastic to me. While I do not they will do well this year, I think they will win more than 0 games. ND will struggle to make a bowl this year and this will be Weiss's last year.

Dame would be perennially dangerous if they've had someone like Meyer at the helm. And he'd thrive on and likely intensify the Michigan and USC rivalries, both of which seem to need some new life. It's a difficult hypothetical choice – playing a Weiss-led Irish team, continuing the status quo, which hasn't produced the best football games in recent years. Though the upside is probably winning more games than we lose, perhaps even a lot more. And seeing Notre Dame fans suffer. That's always nice. Choice 2: A Meyer-led Irish squad would probably mean playing a legit top 10 team most years. Probably losing as much as we win. Yet I have as sense the games would be better for it, the atmosphere greater, the whole rivalry elevated. But then you'd have Irish gloating, return to glory and all that crap. Dunno. I'm torn.

Perhaps this will prove my inferior brain capacity (my way of saying I'm stupid) but is there something out there that says why Meyer would go to ND. Why would he leave the sunny state to go to South Bend?

Given Notre Dame's history and football culture, it's universally considered to be (one of) the most prestigious jobs a coach can get at the college level. Traditionally when Notre Dame calls, you pick up the phone. Most famously, Lou Holtz's contract with Minnesota featured a 'Notre Dame clause' that allowed him to leave, no strings attached, if the job at Notre Dame became available and was offered to him. The Meyer thing is that whether it's official or not, there's likely a Notre Dame clause operative in his relationship with Florida.

I realize that when you think of college football ND comes to mind and they have an incredible stigma and yes I am sure a great program. all of that being said though I would be really surprised to see Meyer leave Gainsville for South Bend. I think that ND will find themselves in the position that we were in 1.5 years ago when we did not know where we would go. I look for them to go to some body like Brian Kelley at Cinncy or the guy at Boise State. Either would be a good choice for them. I am not sure how much money Meyer gets but I think it is in the $3 million area. I think it would take an absorbatant amount of money to get him to leave. IMO

Meyer has done about all he can do at Florida, a couple of BCS champs, a Heisman winner. Not much else to accomplish. If Weis got canned after this year, it would be the same time Meyer loses Tebow. Then he has the opportunity to take the biggest gig in the country (for more money, easily) and to rebuild the program he cheered for as a kid. He would go from UF legend to college football legend. Tell me you wouldn't take that.

Although I think Florida could and would match any $ ND offered (See Billy Donovan's near NBA-type money to coach the 2nd-by-a-longshot most popular team on campus), my guess is the pull for those reasons you note would be too much. It's Dame. He's coached there. He's stated it's his dream job. And his ego would eat up the deification that would come if he turned it around. Echoes of Rockne, Leahy, Parsigian, yada yada. I think he's got two more kids still at home, but as soon as their out of the nest, I would put money on it that he jumps to Dame in a heartbeat if the opportunity is there.

I am pretty sure that Urban Meyer had a Notre Dame clause in his Utah contract, as well as a Michigan and Ohio State clause. He could leave Utah for free for any of those three jobs. Notre Dame and Florida opened simultaneously, and he chose to go to Florida. I assume he paid the buyout, but I'm not sure.

I hate to argue with someone who is agreeing with me but I have to ask this question. Did ND offer him the job? Weiss had a better (or so they thought)track record of success than Meyer. I am still not convinced that Meyer has done everything he can at UF. Besides, while at the top of the world why would someone want to go to the bottom again so that they can try to reach that same height. If new heights were achievable then maybe but how do you do any better than 2 NCs and a Heisman in 4 years. Really, the guy is not going anywhere unless it is the NFL and even then it would have to be for more money than he is getting now.

4 years ago Meyer hadn't done much (solid seasons at Utah, but nothing really amazing) and Weis was given a lot of credit for Super Bowls and Tom Brady. Plus he is an alumnus. At that point, he looked like the better option. Four years ago, Meyer had a career record of 39-8 (including a 22-2 mark at Utah) and had just led Utah to an undefeated season and BCS bid. He was by far the hottest name in the coaching market. ND absolutely did not prefer Weis to him. They fired Willingham when they did because they thought they'd get Meyer. Weis was a fallback option after Meyer unexpectedly spurned them.
