OT: How was everyone's trip to the game

Submitted by goblueclassof03 on January 10th, 2024 at 6:37 PM

Had at least two friends miss the game bc their flights were cancelled or diverted due to weather. How was everybody else's trip in? If u have the patience, this is my "cool story bro" of how I traveled across the world and snuck into the national championship game.

Monday morning at home in Tokyo, about 24 hours before kickoff, I book the last seat out to Houston. 16 hours before kickoff, we takeoff. 4 hours before kickoff, the flight is diverted to San Antonio due to tornadoes in Houston. After sitting on the tarmac for a few hours, I accepted that it wasn't going to be, and let go of my ticket purchased hours earlier, at a $900 loss. I also let go of my ill-fated attempt to witness what I've been waiting 25+ years for. Then, 15 minutes before kickoff, we get the clearance and takeoff for Houston. We land 30 minutes after kickoff; I race through the airport watching what I missed on YouTubetv (phone)... jumping at the dons first td. I reach the taxi area to find madness. I eventually get a cab and give him a monetary incentive to jet me to the stadium. I arrive at halftime, and set off to find my friend's car in the Blue lot in order to drop my luggage. Impossible; I'm losing hope. I flag down a police officer on a cart, and he drives me around until we find the Explorer. I drop my luggage and race to stadium entrance while navigating stubhub and ticketmaster to purchase a ticket... any ticket. No luck; neither site will process a sale that late. It's over... I walk around the stadium dejected. I traveled all this way to make it that close; I could hear the roar of the crowds. As if it couldn't get any worse, suddenly, a rainstorm; I sprint for shelter near a stadium entrance. There, about 20 stadium crew that were cleaning the pregame festivities from the lots scramble in. Without thinking I get in the middle of them and shuffle into the stadium. I quickly flash a screenshot of my previous ticket that I had let go of hours before, and security just nods and waves me in during the commotion. Couldn't believe it, I snuck into the national championship game with about ten minutes left in the third quarter! The rest is history.

I was talking to another couple at a bar afterwards and they said they missed the entire game due to a cancelled flight (they arrived right after the game was over). I felt terrible for them...

Thank goodness I did not fly Alaska for my trip (that is my default airline) as they had to ground their entire fleet of Boeing Max 9's (15% of their fleet). I could have easily been in the same boat as the couple above.

The weather was wild. There was a huge group of people (mostly Michigan fans) tailgating near the stadium and at about 4:30 the temperature dropped maybe 15 degrees in 30 seconds. The sky turned black so most people went inside 2 hours early to avoid it. That sucked because we were forced to drink $16 beers at that point.

After the game all of the bars/restaurants near the team hotel were closed. So the best thing to do was go in to the team hotel which was a VIBE. So many players and former players were there celebrating and nobody wanted to go to bed.

The next day I went back to the team hotel because I had 8 hours to kill and nothing better to do and chatted (mostly just saying congrats) with several coaches and players. Blake was there doing photos and autographs with fans. He was, as expected, the star of the show.

Overall an incredible trip. Houston was meh but I won’t ever forget that 24 hours. Go Blue!

Damn. Congrats on getting in. That's lucky as shit. Of course, everything before that was terrible.

Thinking about traveling last minute like that gives me hives. Had I been inclined I would travel on Saturday at least.

NRG stadium itself was surprisingly good for a pro stadium. The atmosphere inside did a good job emulating a college vibe which I can’t say for many pro spots.

Its location? Terrible. Traffic everywhere. The flight in? Turbulence central if you were lucky enough to not be on a 737 in which case your flight was cancelled altogether. Weather? Garbage.

Houston streets make Michigan streets look pristine. Fair to say I’m not going back anytime soon. It’s shockingly sparse for a major US city.

The game was awesome, there was this very noticeable buzz walking the concourse 2 hours before the game. It certainly helped that there were so many Michigan fans, but would recommend everyone go once for their team if they can.

Flying to Houston on Sunday was smooth, but the return was delayed 2.5 hours and we almost had to divert to Tampa due to Tuesday’s storms. A little inconvenient but not too bad.

Our only knock on Houston was that there was nowhere to go around the stadium after the game. We ended up walking a mile to the only “sports bar” still open called Carrington’s. The walk was through construction and the sidewalks were flooded from all the rain. We made it there and the “sports bar” turned out to be a hookah bar/night club with one bartender. The vibes weren’t great.

We bailed quickly and went across the street to get chicken from a food truck and gas station beers. The food took about 40 minutes but there were plenty of UM and UW fans around to chat with.

We finally got the chicken and went back to the hotel. There we found they kept the bar open late and we got to celebrate and had a great time til they finally shut it down.

NRG stadium is great venue in and of itself, but it was so far from anything else good. All the adventures still added to the already memorable evening

Everything was great for me. Partied at the team hotel for 3 nights. The Convention Center event was OK and the pre-game tailgate at the stadium was pretty good too. Got in the stadium early for the festivities and had great seats on Mich side. The stadium was about 2/3 Mich fans. After Donovan’s 1st touchdown and Sainristil’s pick and run, the stadium was so loud I couldn’t hear the people next to me. Experience of a lifetime.

Best story I heard from a guy on the plane was that as the storm came just before the game, the ushers didn’t even bother scanning their tickets. They got in and eventually sold them back to Ticketmaster for 2k a pop. 😂

That’s an amazing story and glad you got to be there even if you were late. My trip was nowhere near that hectic or dramatic, just shorter than I would’ve liked. Didn’t get to partake in any of the weekend festivities just essentially flew in for the game and headed back home early the next day. Travel home was long and arduous so luckily we won or it would have been miserable.

I live in Grand Rapids and hedged all my bets on getting the jumpseat on our flight to Houston Monday morning. I got on the 0845 flight, landed in Houston at 1115 and knew it was going to be a bad day with the winds were gusting to 40 knots and a massive line of storms was to the west. A couple of the main arrivals from the north for planes into IAH is are Driller along with the Gusher and both were going to get hammered by that line (and did) resulting in many diversions.

I got to the stadium at 1600 and because of the weather people were already in pouring in. The fans (both sides) were amazing and great form. I was in 607 and seated next to Washington fans on my right and 90% of the section was Michigan fans. The Washington fans were very nice for the most part and they’ll be great for the B1GTen.

I moved to a lower section as the game was coming to an end so that I could enjoy the celebration

All in all it was a great experience other than trying to get an Uber out of there. I walked about a mile and a half to a hotel and got one there. I got back to my hotel at 0045, and jumped on a flight to Denver to see Jim Gaffigan last night, and am now home in Grand Rapids. A busy couple of days for sure

Decided to go for it and take my 7 year old along. Was planning to fly in Monday morning but got spooked by the weather and moved to Sunday (which was actually cheaper coming from Chicago). Got in and went to the Alumni pep rally which was a blast. Buddy made it in late Sunday night. We went to NASA on Monday morning which was a great time and a great way to distract ourselves for a few hours.

We booked a hotel right in sight of the stadium which worked out perfectly. Got in before 4 once we saw the weather moving in. Then the game which everyone knows and we stayed there until they kicked us out. Made it back in pretty good time all things considered on Tuesday.

Trip of a lifetime and was so grateful I could have my son there too.

I went with my wife and 7yo son.  We made a memory that will last a lifetime.

We went in Saturday and used our time Sunday and Monday before the game for family activities recommended to us by people on MGoBlog. NASA Space Museum, San Jacinto monument, Color Factory, etc.  Lunch at Grace’s, dinner at The Nash.  It was a nice time.

I have nothing bad to say about the many Washington fans I encountered.  All very nice, all eager to talk football, gracious in defeat, etc.  They seem like good people.

As an aside, I’m used to seeing young kids at Michigan home games.  However, very few were at the championship game (guessing it’s a $$$, school night, late kickoff thing).  My son felt like a celebrity getting tons of high fives for being there. Lol.

I flew in Detroit-Chicago-Houston the night before. I've got Lions season tickets so I tried to see the Lions game on Sunday but the only flight I could get forced me to leave midway through the third quarter. Flight went fine.

I never complained about leaving the Lions game early but the end result of the Michigan game trumps leaving 1000 Lions games early.

I bought my ticket just after the Rose Bowl win and paid way too much. Seller waited until absolute last minute to send it over and then they sent me the wrong ticket. Complained to StubHub, got a refund, and bought a better ticket for $1088 less.

I would be very hard-pressed to find a better day in my life.
