OT: Harry Belafonte passed away
He'll be missed for is sense of right and wrong, but we will always have his music.
Bob Dylan said of him, "Harry was the best balladeer in the land and everybody knew it."
Time for the Banana Boat Song, but then again, it's always time for the Banana Boat Song.

I'm sorry to hear this news. As great as he was as an entertainer, he was an even better person.

May he rest in peace - and that his family may find solace in the wonderful life he led.
So many in a former generation made a difference - reflecting the challenges in the world. Sidney Poitier, Sammy Davis Jr, Harry Belafonte.
Those 3 choices are Amazin! Blu

”Jump In The Line” holds a very special place in the music pantheon. RIP HB.
I actually have Beetlejuice to thank for introducing me to that song.
You’re not the only one. What an ending!

Activist. Marched with Dr. King. Always showed up. Came and demonstrated with us when we took over the Florida capital after George Zimmerman was acquitted in Trayvon Martin's murder. Birth of the Dream Defenders. Good-looking AF.

My dad used to sing a line from "Mama Look a Boo Boo" and make us kids laugh:
Shut your mouth
Go away
Mama look a Boo boo dey

Love Belafonte for his timeless music and activism, and it's been a delight to see my 4 year old son Desmond become an even bigger fan of his music than me. We have him on constant rotation on cassette tapes in my truck... What a life this man led!
Belafonte's "activism" included the promotion of murderous thugs and cowards like Castro.
exactly! And even in his death, through this post particularly, the extreme right gets their panties in a bunch over his politics.
+1 for cassette tapes in the truck.
Yeah, my daughter loved his music when she was little!
Given how this board overall cannot have reasoned, cogent, discussions without people getting butthurt when their personal opinion doesn't line up with fact, perhaps there should be a permanent end of OT season.
RIP Banana Boat Man.
Growing up thru the late 50s Harry and Lena were my first exposures to black influence of any kind, outside of baseball. And MLB players rarely said much in those days.
Thank You Harry.
precisely what he should be remembered for... thank you!
Yes this is the way! Did someone get booted to Bolivia?
Comment count is definitely a lot lighter.
Ahhhhhhh.
RIP, one of the true legends.
Terrific person and talent.
I recently watched his interview with Sidney Portier on Dick Cavett rerun. Amazing poise.
They were promoting Buck and the Preacher which is a wonderful movie.
And then there is the Banana Boat Song.
R.I.P.
In addition to his music, he was a noted activist, and extremely generous with his time and money.
Harry Belafonte and Sidney Poitier were once chased by the KKK while running cash to civil rights workers:
