I’m sorry I’m not back in Michigan yet. Oberon is like liquid gold.

Bell's Solsun was the original liquid gold.

I just wanted to work in the ‘liquid gold’ line from The Fantastic Mr. Fox.

That something I'm not familiar with.
OTOH, I'm very familiar with Oberon and its predecessor Solsun.
I lived in K-Zoo back when Bells Brewing got started in the early 80s. Solsun was one of Bell's relatively early concoctions and owner Larry Bell changed the name of the brew from "Solsun" (which I had been enjoying for several years) to "Oberon" sometime back in the early/mid 90's(?).
I'm cloudy on the details, but it was for legal reasons (lawsuit and/or trademark issues).

Yes, Larry Bell changed the name from "Solsun" to "Oberon" because of the Mexican brewing company Cerveceria Cuauhtemoc Moctezuma, makers of a beer with a similar name: El Sol ("The Sun").
You mean Obertop
Picked up some yesterday. Heading down to Bell’s tomorrow afternoon.
not a beer drinker, maybe one or two a year. what makes oberon so special? (sincere question, not rhetoric)
Nothing. It’s the emperor’s new clothes.
It’s a good summer wheat. Better than blue moon. From Michigan. Only out for the summer. Oberon is a summer sprite in some Nordic culture. Might have that last part wrong. Anyway. It was a big deal in Ann Arbor in the nineties.
I’d venture to say it’s an excellent summer wheat. My favorite Bells beer, though some years it’s not as good as others. Regular in the rotation

Ya know, Blue Moon was the first beer I actually enjoyed; back before the craft renaissance. I haven't had one in ages, but I was told that ever since MillerCoors/Molson Coors acquired the manufacturer, cost-cutting took hold...and well, yup. Not trying another. I'd prefer to remember it how it once was....

It's good, but like Oktoberfest, it benefits from being seasonal and therefore overly celebrated.

Nostalgia.

People love it.... Not sure if they love the beer for what it is....or that its signifies spring and soon to be summer.
I'm not a huge fan, but people love it.
We don’t talk about that show. Ever.

This is the way
That is one impressive display. Kudos to the builders and brewers.
It's D&W in Petoskey, and it is impressive.
Having recently been diagnosed with Celiac Disease, Oberon is one of the things that truly makes me sad that I’ll never be able to have again.

Tell me about it. I've found a handful of gluten free beers I like, only two of which I can find on a semi-reasonable basis.
I can find a bunch of ciders these days, which is good. Cider tends to be too sweet for me, so unless it's really dry I can only have a couple.
I mostly drink red wine these days.
As is the case with so many of life's problems, I found the solution to this is bourbon.

Same boat. I just haven't found a beer or cider that I love. I enjoy rum and coke, but I hate the idea of pounding coke. Life just sucks more without beer and soft bread and good pizza and sub sandwiches. Also, not having the ability to freely eat anything at a party or potluck. Could be worse though.
Oberon is like the girl with the little curl. So hit and miss from year to year.
Some years, it's a wonderful bit of alchemy with kombucha-like clots of dead yeast goodness. Other years, it's meh at best.
Hi EM, good to figuratively ‘see’ you
I doubt you'll see this as it's been a couple of days since I last posted, but just in case - hello backatcha!
EM - Where have you been????
I've always been here. (Been busy due to a career change a couple of years back - good busy, not bad busy.)
That is a good day
Seems like all the summer beers hit the shelves at my local grocery store (Wegmans) this week.
After Christmas/New Years, I usually lay off almost all alcohol until the mid-spring...needless to say, I can’t wait to start drinking again in a couple of weeks once the Master’s starts.
EDIT: wrong post.
EDIT: can someone interpret this for me, please?
EDIT: okay, now that is a very strange software glitch. i have twice very clearly hit the 'reply' button to the picture of the woman in the post above, and both times my reply has nested in this post.
someone play the 'twilight zone' music...
Used to live within walking distance of Bells ... try to stop in whenever I’m in town. Nice that Maru’s is across the street. Lots of good eats and drinks in Kalamazoo
The big ten does not look that good in the tourney
When you are hoping that Rutgers might salvage the honor of the conference, you know it hasn't been a good day.
Seems early, but I'll take it.
Could they bring back Smitten? Love me some rye beer.

Isn't Oberon always released on or near the vernal equinox?
Pretty weird that I can get it all winter long here in AZ. Which is nice. They must have had a lot in the warehouse.
I’ve been sampling the latest craze, it seems- the Hazy IPA. They’re not unlike Oberon IMHO.
There a several states that get Oberon year-round. I believe AZ, CO, CA, and NC are on that list. Makes me sad as a Michigander.

I have a six on ice ready for tomorrow night’s game.

One of my favorites. It will always be known as Solsun to me.
OP, is that the Glenn's in Petoskey?
Yes, or what used to be Glenn's. It's D&W now. Good catch.
Every time I see a Starbucks I think of Louis CK's line about how Starbucks used to be good, but now they just push a button and grandma's diarrhea comes out.

I've never found starbucks to be good..... it was always overpriced, okay coffee that had a hipster, trendy following. imo
Hell, yeah. I love to drink a bottle or two with my girl. Do you have a girlfriend, guys? If you have problems with that then you can try out these hookup dating sites. Here you can find a lot of cool dating options for yourself. I'm sure that you will get lucky as well. Good luck.
