To the OP:  You do realize that a lot of Penguins fans post the same type of stuff about the Red Wings players (namely Osgood and Franzen) and took just as much joy out of the Red Wings getting eliminated from the playoffs, right?  Why not just enjoy the game and let the immature (and obsessive) hatred of an individual player go already.  It really is pathetic, no matter who does it.

Nope, I wouldn't.  But, in the context of your example, I would care what other Michigan fans think about what I say or do.  Just like you should care what other Red Wings fans think about what you say and do.  I know for a fact, since the vast majority of my friends and family are Red Wings fans, that the act that you're putting forth here annoys and embarasses an awful lot of Red Wings fans.  But hey, what do I care.  I'm not a Red Wings fan, so have at it.

sooooooooooooo you're not a wings fan yet you speak for "an awful lot of Red Wings fans"?  somehow i don't buy that, regardless of your extremely impressive sample size of the "vast majority of [your] friends and family."

to bring another comparison to michigan (since its the lingua franca of this site), making fun of crosby for being a little bitch is like making fun of TP for his "everyone murders..." comment.  its not like im inventing silly names like shitsburgh or whatever (akin to sp****na).  its quite simple - we (red wings fans) don't like him.

plus, the pictures are funny.

Your post kind of epitomizes one thing I really don't get about this site.  There is a large percentage of the Michigan student body, and people who are fans of Michigan sports, who are not from Michigan.  I wouldn't remotely expect them to be Red Wings fans, yet there is a contingent here who believes that it's natural that everyone who is a fan of Michigan sports is a fan of the Red Wings.  Sorry, but the connection with the Red Wings just isn't there for a large portion of the posters here like you apparently think there is.

lets do some math!  order of magnitude calculations are awesome!

michigan out of state student population is 2/3.  lets assume mgoblog is 2/3 michigan students/alums and 1/3 michigan natives who didn't end up at michigan for some reason or another.

now consider that of those out of state, maybe half are from hockey strongholds, or have some interest in hockey.  we can label that half opposing fans and disregard the other half (since they dont care).

finally, given what ive seen/heard/etc after living in ann arbor for 17 years, id say at least 4/5 of native michiganders are wings fans.  so 1/5 are not.

combining all opposing fans together...

  • native michigan students/alums - 2/3 * 2/3 * 1/5 = 4/45
  • non-native michigan students/alums - 1/3 * 2/3 * 1/2 = 1/9
  • native michigan non-students - 1/3 * 1/5 = 1/15

add those all up and you get about 27%.  so i would safely assume that this site is about 65-70% wings fans.  so your theory is busted right there.

now you might say, "hey you didnt count people not from michigan who are still on the site" and yes i didnt, because there arent as many of those people.  i still generously adjusted by adding 3-8% flat out to my final estimate.

you might even say that 30% is a large portion, and while that is true, it is still a huge minority.  and we all know, mgoblog goes with 1) brian, and 2) the majority.

also, you have to consider that sidney crosby, being a polarizing figure, is disliked by serious hockeys fans in many markets across the US and canada.  newsflash - wings fans arent the only ones who dont like him!!!

other factors that point to your error:

  • go and see how many threads are opened during the season for wings games.  they vastly outnumber all other teams combined.  guaransheed.
  • mgopoint voting is was intended to keep a leash on trolls and douchebags, but it has morphed into the voice of the community.  check and see how people vote on sidney crosby related posts.
  • see how many of the related blogs in the sidebar include red wings allegiance.

BOOM LOGIC'D.

btw, just out of curiosity, what nhl team do you support?  i'd bet a beer that you're a pens fan.

I'm assuming you didn't do it intentionally, but you actually proved my point.  30-35% is about what I would have expected.  Thanks for the mathematical explanation, though!  That means that 30-35%, using your numbers, could care less about the Red Wings.

As for the number of threads started about the Wings versus about other teams, it's somewhat ironic (and hilarious) that the second most (guaransheed) is about the Penguins and none of them have been started by Penguins fans (again, guaransheed).  It is a little confusing as to why people would choose to start threads about and discuss Red Wings hockey here since there are plenty of existing (and good) Red Wings hockey boards and also because the Red Wings don't have any UofM players on the team.  I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that fans of other teams don't start threads about their teams because (1) there are other, more appropriate places to talk about NHL hockey and (2) Red Wings fans go ape shit when anyone tries to discuss teams other than the Red Wings (just ask the Blackhawks fans, who are most likely the #2 fanbase in terms of population here).  That's just an experienced guess, though.

EDIT: And please stop "negging" all of my posts just because you don't like me.  That's really pretty pathetic.

So nobody is going to give me props for saying that Montreal had a legitimate chance to win this series? If I recall I was the only person who really said that, mainly because blah blah blah Pittsburgh was more physical blah blah blah. Fuck that, Cammy owns, Habs move on, thank you.

If I remember correctly, I agreed with you.  I had this as a series that was either going to be the Penguins in four or either team in seven.  Pittsburgh should have won this series for any number of reasons, but they didn't, and all credit goes to Montreal.  Pittsburgh didn't lose this series, Montreal won it.

The Habs/Caps game 7 thread you didn't really agree, but I guess it wasn't total disagreement either. I mean I'm not mad or anything lol I am just pumped that my belief in Montreal is at least partially responsible for them winning this series and I selfishly want recognition for having an effect on the game.

You're right.  In the immediate aftermath of the Caps/Canadiens series I didn't think it would be a long series, but by the time the series rolled around I was firmly on the prediction that I posted above.  You're definitely right though.  You're one of the very people who called it and stuck with it.
