OT: Guru from Gang Starr passes away
Figured a lot of us are of the age that we know who Gang Starr was. Guru died of cancer today. For the old and crotchety on here who dismiss all rap as garbage, I'd beg to differ and Guru/Gang Starr is a major reason why. Too bad to see him pass at such a young age. RIP.

I didn't even know he was ill (the bad kind, anyway). Loved his Jazzmatazz series, especially State of Clarity with Common and No More with Craig David.
RIP
For the un-initiated, here's a really good mix of some of Gangstarr's best stuff:

Primo rightfully gets a lot of the Gangstarr accolades, but Guru definitely carved out a style, and it was often pretty great.
Dwyck was my song back in the day.
I added a Guru station on my pandora... tons of throw back jams that are nice switch from today's hip hop jams. De la Soul, Guru, Roots etc. Think I found a new favorite station.
Guru is the man, knew he was sick and in and out of a coma, so i was trying to mentally prepare myself for this. Dude will be missed, this is sad day for the hip hop community..RIP...
RIP GURU. You will be missed. Crazy lyrics!!
I absolutely *love* Gang Starr..."Moment of Truth" is one of my all-time favorite albums.
I hate to sound like an old man, but there just isn't a lot of hip-hop like that nowadays.
I have to agree, "Moment of Truth" could be the best rap album of all-time. R.I.P. GURU
All Gangstarr albums are classics. This Solar cat Guru was messing with lately was shady as hell, wouldn't even let his Gurus family into see him during his coma.
GURU is a legend and Gangstarr was what real hip-hop is all about. That is some sad news.
King of the Monotone Style
One of the true positive MC's. Really underrated as an artist.
RIP Guru. Why do the talented ones always go early? In the meanwhile, Soulja Boy is live and well. WTF is wrong with this picture? I'm not a big rap fan but GangStarr was great.
That news really threw off my day because Gang Starr's music has been in my rotation since my early teens, and I'm 30 now.
Gang Starr was one of the most consistent acts in all of hip hop. While others fell off, or fell of the map completely, they continued to get better with each album. While I think every one of their albums has the right to be called a classic, "The Ownerz" is my personal favorite. That's sad that Guru and Premo were beefing at the time of his death.

Man I luv Gangstarr, DJ Premier is my fav producer ever and Guru compliments him nice.
"Mass Appeal" is for real.
Aw boo hiss, that's sad. I didn't know he was ill. Guru was one of my favs, he will be missed. A true hip hop emcee....
