OT - The Grammy's

Big news here: Beyonce pulled the ace out of her sleeve and covered an Alanis song. The best thing she could have done. Isn't that ironic?

..has benefitted greatly from pitch correction software. As long as you're not bending notes on purpose, like a more blues-based artist would (think Reba if you are talking female Country/Pop crossover), you can sing almost a quarter-tone off, run it through correction, and it sounds clean, mean, and pristine. Since the award was for a finished product and not live performances, though, he inability to stay accurate live shouldn't really count against her. Besides, when performing live, the old adage that "shit happens" is often quite relevant.

But it is hard to watch these kinds of shows and think of them as anything other than a sales award show. Nobody on that show did anything other than write catchy songs that sell a lot of copy. Everything is just middle of the road slickly produced pop. The "Lady Gaga is a groundbreaking musician " meme is getting a little old too. Black-Eyed Peas, Beyonce, Taylor Swift? Fuck. What about MF Doom or Mike Patton? Not to insult anybody's taste, but these awards generally go to major label artists who have been put where they are by a meticulously executed marketing plan and whose records have been tweaked by the best producers money can buy. Originality and artistic integrity are not generally preconditions to the granting of a Grammy. That is why I have a really hard time getting excited by them. The musical artists that I enjoy don't even get considered for Grammies.

First of all: If you take the Grammies seriously or believe they are awarded based on musical merit, you are an idiot with terrible taste. To Maximinius: Agreed. The only reason I even witnessed the train wreck that was the Grammies was because I had the TV on MUTE and saw a masked guy on stage. I thought... "who's ripping off DOOM?" I can't tell you how long my mouth hung open after I found out that the "I gotta feeling" song that's been forced down my ears dozens of times was the Black Eyed Peas. I didn't even like them when they claimed to be hip hop but this is mind blowing. Really. You can have your Grammies, but don't expect any folks like us to take you seriously after we find out you own Taylor Swift albums.
