OT: GoT S05 E06 "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken"

Ughhhhhh.....

That sucked.  The episode was pretty great, up until the end.

And I don't know if I mean "That ending sucked as storytelling/execution/etc" or "that was great storytelling I'm so pissed at the bad guy."

I think this is the first time I've actually been frustrated/angry with the unending "bad stuff" happening.

EDIT/UPDATE:

Letting it digest and moving on, I really liked the rest of the episode.  The Arya scenes were great - I'm excited to see her become someone else.

Loved the Tyrion/Jorah scenes.  A classic "talk my way out of death" moment for Tyrion.  It's been a while since he's had one of those.  What was his reference to his errhhmm... size?  "Don't be so sure?"  Pretty funny.

Sand Snakes v. Bronn and Jaime!  Fun, but oh man, Bronn got nicked by that blade, and we know what Oberyn was famous for...

Yay the Queen of Thornes is back!  Boo, Cersei wins this round.  This plotline looks to be following the books, so no further comment on it from me.

You had to know Ramsey was going to have sex with Sansa on their wedding night, would you have been less outraged if she willingly had sex with him?

I think anyone would be less outraged if she willingly had sex with him.  Isn't that obvious?

And people keep playing the "OUTRAGE" card.  I hope I'm not conveying outrage.  I know there's plenty of outrage articles on the Net right now.  I'm just saying this portrayal seemed to be pushing it, even for GoT.  There was something to it that made it tougher to swallow than the rapes at Craster's Keep or the Red Wedding or whatever.  I can't put my finger on it, but something made it worse and I think that's a part of filmmaking that they just failed with in this episode.

No you are playing exactly the outrage card. You're just trying to squirm yourself out of the outrage group.

You can't even give a definite reason on why you don't like the scene besides "well just b/c."

Were you sickened by the castration stuff? pregnant woman getting stabbed? Ned's head on a spike? Cersei's rape? Kids dying?

If you say no to any of this, then you're selectively picking what you're outraged about and a hypocrite.

I'll help you out and tell you why I don't like the scene. We already know Ramsey is evil, there is no point in showing us he's evil again. As if we didn't know he already was after what he did to Reek/Theon.

This season is failing b/c it's not showing us anything new in terms of character development. Only Arya and Jon are showing any signs of development.

Ok, here's the reason. I knew Sansa would be forced to consumate the marriage. The show runners/producers did a shitty job conveying that in a meaningful way. It sucked. The episode was bad. It wasnt bad because of rape itself, it was bad because it was bad writing/production/cinematography/everything.

Is it being outraged to say that the show creators did bad?

Was I sickened by kids dying? Ned's head on a spike?  No, not really. Its different when you've spent 4.5 seasons getting to know a character. Thats where the show fucked up. They needed to be delicate in this because therewas/is a huge emotional attachment to that character.

This article sums it up:

I'm a book reader and staunch fan of the show. But me saying that the final scene of the episode sucked doesnt make me a hypocrite.

This series has completely jumped the shark. The Dorne fight scene would have been at home in an episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Anchorman. Truly contrived, horrible television. It's such a far cry from the first three seasons that it makes me think that the whole cast of writers and directors had their faces removed and hijacked by a band of 15-year-old boys. It makes me feel bad for the original actors, more than anything, since they've shown what they can do with quality scripts (Kit Harrington excluded, of course).

I had to upvote you just for your description of the lamest fight scene ever.  That Jamie, Bran Snakes fight scene was so bad.  I asked my brother who is a diehard fan of the show if they were fighting or practicing for a dance off.  I felt no suspense or worry that anyone will die.  Maybe Bran because he did get sliced with a possible poison sword.  While I don't think the show has jumped the shark, this season has been average at best, and the writers are going to have to deliver a great end to this season to redeem themselves.  I was way more offended by that terrible fight scene than I was by Ramsey's actions, because we have seen him do far worse, the guy needs to be drawn and quartered for sure, that would be the only death for him I would accept.  I liked the Cersei/ marjory stuff here and seeing Mr Eko with Tyrion and Jorah was cool, but I am not dialed in to this stuff as I was in past seasons.  I will stick with this show until the end, but I don't buy that this is the best show on TV.  I can't wait until Hannibal and True Detective start.

The fight scene was bad.  When your brain removes you from the experience and says "So wait, they are going to happen to get there at the same time?" you know it's not possibly going to be convincing.

Sand Snakes acting is baaaaaad.  Like, how did the casting figure out how to get GREAT childhood actors and then fail so badly casting the Sand Snakes?

I think this season has been good, with this episode being the obvious exception.  If you go back and think about previous seasons, it's not like there's a Red Wedding every episode.

I thought Arya's arrival at Braavos was awesome filmmaking.  I think everything happening at the Wall is interesting  and I've enjoyed the Tyrion/Varys/Jorah arcs.

Dorne has been rushed, especially last night.  It would have been worth seeing more of Dorne outside the water gardens and actually in the city of Sunspear.

I haven't read the books yet so I'm not up in arms about departures from the books. I think all the drama and dialogue will set up an awesome end to the season. Especially the Tyrell angle. I think it is gonna bite that tart Cersei right in her arse.

The inclusion of Dorne and the Sand Snakes was what I was anticipating the most this season. To say it's been flat is an understatement. Bad acting and fight choreography has ruined every scene with them so far. Cartoonish is putting it mildly.

The name alone makes me suspicious that they're pretty cheesy and campy in the books too. And the idea sort of lends itself to one-dimensional presentation: "Look! Little girls, but they can fight! Neat!" Also I think it's just gonna be hard to choreograph fight scenes between large adults and 100 lb mites unless the latter have martial arts training or something. But I agree that those were some lame sequences.

1) The stuff with the Sparrows feels like a real stretch designed to keep Cersei relevant. Maybe the incredible rise to lower of the Church Militant makes sense in the books, but it seems rushed and far-fetched in the show. 2) The sand snakes -- and really, Dorne more broadly -- are embarrassingly campy. The costumes for Dornish guards look like they were raided from the Lion King musical rack. B-movie fantasy plot and dialogue abounds in Dorne for some reason. 3) Tyrion (and Jorah) being abducted and Tyrion talking his way into being kept alive feels like a variation of a theme we've seen many times by now. Maybe the whole point is to get the band back together with Varys, which is a worthy goal I suppose. But it felt forced. 4) Ending with Sansa's rape is making the creators of the show start to look almost sadistic towards viewers. I like Baelish more and more as a character - he's slimy as hell, but he might be the smartest individual in Westeros. And the House of Black and White stuff was really well done. (The hall of faces - holy shit!) But overall this was not an enjoyable episode at all.

This is coming from a book reader who only touches on the series to see some dramatic stuff....

I am beginning to think that GRRM is a pretty negative guy, and his universe is going to reflect it. Don't expect any happy endings. Every time I'd be like 'Wow, that guy needs to die' (Joffrey/Theon) a new guy comes up (Ramsey) who is worse. I love his universe, the stories are really compelling, but the larger story arcs (Dany, Jon, the White Walkers...) are starting to get completely lost to me in the nasty details (Hey look Sansa's getting $hit on again!). I'm starting to wonder if he's the type of author I despise: The one who only views the dark slimy part of the human soul, and that's all he portrays, because he's 'Keeping it real'. Its really made me distance myself a bit from the story. If I find out that there are some upsides to all this (I'm not expecting a happily ever after) I'll finish out the series. But if if its just this descent into hell, no thanks.

I completely agree. It's a testament to the overall quality of the show that I'm still watching, given that there's only a handful of instances where I've actually liked the way things turned out. I still hold out hope that everything is going to work out in the end (at least in the show; winter may be coming, but Winds of Winter, not so much...), but that hope is definitely getting dimmer...

I don't think its all negative.  Jaime, Sandor, Theon and Sansa all have redemptive arcs.  It might not do them a lot of good but just because the good guys don't always win doesn't mean that their goodness isn't being portrayed.  There are also unambiguosly good characters like Brienne and Davos.

If this tv season ends like the books everyone is going to be super pissed off and super happy. They foreshadowed the former with the Jorah/Tyrion dialogue. On the latter the old Tyrell woman has not cast her ace card yet. I shall say no more.

Yeah, I think we can safely talk about what the ace up Lady Olenna's sleave is and I'm surprised she didn't play it.  Just in case, see more below.  Not really spoilers as this is all show stuff:

DUH Cersei's kids are the product of incest and the religious nuts are going to frown on that just as much as "sword swallowing," as Lady Olenna puts it.  She must play it next week, I would think.  I was surprised she didn't threaten Cersei with it when they were at the table.  However, it makes sense looking back: Olenna playing that card means that Tommen is off the throne, as is Margaery.  It's her ace up the sleave to keep her from losing the game, but it will also prevent her (her family/Margaery) from winning it.

Cersei is too drunk/stupid to realize that she's put herself in a no-win situation.

Ancient times (and even not so ancient times) were awful.  There was lots of rape and abuse of women in general.   GOT is based off of European (mostly English) history.  Anyone who thinks that lots of women weren't sexually abused by their husbands during medieval times is probably kidding htemselves.

Not that we want to SEE it happening either, but things did pretty much suck for women back then.  A lot of times they were treated as property.
