OT - Deadliest Catch
Deadliest Catch started when I was finishing high school. Like most I loved it - it was one of those shows where I could sit and watch with my Dad and we'd have the same feelings, interests, and reactions.
As the years went on it's popularity seemed to wane. Both publicly and with me as college demanded too much of my attention to follow many TV shows.
Last week I watched a few episodes and to my great sadness learned that Phil Harris passed away during filming of this season. He died back in February of complications from a stroke. The last couple episodes have covered the stroke and the next episode, assumedly will cover the end. Tuesday at 9pm is a two-hour special about Phil - one of his final requests was that the cameras keep rolling and his story told to the end.
This show was so groundbreaking - part of the allure was that these guys are risking their lives at every moment. I don't know of any show in which one of the main guys, a guy you love to love, passes away and it is all documented. It's a terrible shame.
Just wanted to throw this out there for anyone - like me - that maybe uesd to watch this show but hasn't followed it recently. Again, Tuesday 9pm on Discovery.
Sad news...
I had not caught that.
... but if you must know I watched the show once; didn't get hooked.
Even so, catch this week and if you can find them on torrent or something the last 2 weeks shows.
It has been some f the most dramatic TV I have seen.
The fact that it is real only makes it toougher.
This season is putting the reality in Reality TV.
"This is the OT of all OT's..."
I beg to differ....i have seen stranger things posted on this site.
This is a widely popular show....I enjoy it & like may other I have really enjoyed all the "characters" on the show. Its so easy to identify with a lot of them b/c they are all so flawed in there own way. Looking forward to Tuesday....
RIP Captain Phil
Yeah, I've DVR'd the episodes this season, because I'd heard about Phil Harris back in February, but have actually found myself watching them live because this season's been so good. I've seen all of the prior seasons, usually when they run marathons of seasons. This season has been the most gripping to me, with the stuff that Phil's family has been going through and what we will see on the 2 hour special about Phil. It's been pretty damn good television, and it sucks, because I feel like these guys on the show are...I don't know- the kind of guys that you'd love to have a beer (or 8) with, you know? They are grounded, hard working, salt-of-the-earth types. And badasses. You get to feel like you know them as people.
RIP Captain Phil.
Yeah, this is one of the stranger thangs I've ever read. How is this worse than some of the dumber OT posts??????? I really disagree with you Sven. sorry.
If you think this is the most OT thread ever, you must have missed these gems:

great contribution to the thread.
Sad that Phil passed away .... Have very much enjoyed the show over the years .
one of my favorite shows, have seen probably every episode from the beginning.
This season has been unreal. I had heard that he passed way back in Feb so I have been unfortunately anticipating how the story would unfold. I really like how it also documents how the other captains/crews have dealt with the news.
My friend ran into him at a little hole in the wall resturant in Ridgefield, WA (40 miles north of Portland, OR) last fall. It was during the NFL preseason. He was just out riding is Harley on a weekend road trip. Strange to know he is gone a few months after this picture.
Did your friend get a chance to have a brew with him, or did he just ask him for a pic? Phil seemed like an awesome guy to just sit down and shoot the shit with.
No he didn't. He said that he was the only one in the place that knew who he was. He waited until Phil was done eating and ran out to grab the pic. When my friend went back to finish his meal, the whole place was staring at him like he was crazy for chasing down this random biker to get his picture.
As I've gotten older, I've come to have a deep respect for men like Phil Harris. He's someone I would love to have as a neighbor. Eager to help a friend, hard working, living life to the fullest.
Like MGoShoe might say it: "Fair winds and a following sea, Captain Harris."
I have watched it since the beginning, and this season has been one of the better ones.
I started watching a couple years ago and have followed it the past 3 seasons. About the only one on the show that I don't like is Keith on the Wizard. He comes across as a whiny asshole. None of these guys are angels, of course, but the Hillstrands appear to have fun on their boat, Sig will take the time to explain things, and Phil was just an old biker-type fisherman who didn't put up with much bullshit on the boat. I also like Wild Bill on the new boat, but he's got a couple fuck-ups working for him.
As for Phil's kids, wow. Josh will be a captain sooner rather than later, but I can't help but think that things are going to end badly for Jake. He doesn't appear like he's ever had his shit together, and this pain pill addiction isn't helping matters in the least.
on jake harris, he has gotten the help needed and according to the cornelia marie web site he is doing much better...
I think that Phil Harris is being spoken of so well on what is principally a Michigan football/basketball blog speaks to the impact that he had on people. That says a lot about him. Condolences to his family.
First, I show respect to the Harris family:
My thoughts are with them.
Second...
This, not that, is the Deadliest Catch.
