These type of deals are for the short term. The Red Sox are hoping they are in good shape and he is playing well for the first 3ish years. It's always done for the first few years of the deal. You hope the player plays so good and they win a championship with his help and the end of the deal when he is no where near worth that much is easier to accept.

Dave Dumbrowski doing what he does best.  Spending a buttload of other people's money.  Glad we have Avila instead.  The Zimmermann deal will pay off so much more than this one.

You're not exaggerating by much.

The Tigers have Cabrera until he's 40, with two more years on top of that, that kick in if he's in the top 10 of the MVP voting in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Miggy's got 8 years and $240 mil guaranteed left on his deal, plus the two option years at $28/per.

Forget Verlander's deal. There's only 4 years left on that deal, and we're out from under that when he's 36. THIS is the one that will bite the Tigers eventually.

But deals like this and deals like the one he threw (hah!) Verlander's way suggest that he's lost some of his "value proposition" analytical ability.

Put another way, that's a shit ton of money for a pitcher who's not exactly shined during the off-season.  Glad the Tigers got Zimmerman (and K-Rod) for what they're paying!

Wow. Even though I expected him to go to Boston and for big money the numbers are still "mind bottling."

As a Cubs and Tigers fan I am glad neither team bit on that contract. I expect the Cubs to target Lackey and/or the Shark. Greinke and Cuetto probably go to the Dodgers and Giants in either order n

This is why i was glad we traded Price. Someone was going to give him this contract and I am glad its not the Tigers.

I think DD is a hell of GM and I was sad it ended, especially the way it ended. This strategy clearly works, but trading / FA at the expense of developing a farm system would not be they way I built a team. Most GMs don't get the leeway Theo got in Chicago, but DD is near the other end of the extreme. And, almost universally, I think these humungo deals hurt teams more than help.

And, as an aside, I think Price's playoff record is inconsequential to his worth.
