OT- Classless Cubs Fan

Submitted by lairdgoblue on
So Im watching the Phillies Cubs game on ESPN, and Victorino, the Phillies center-fielder, races back to the track to catch a flyball with the bases loaded for the Cubs. As the ball is about to fall into Victorino's glove, a Cubs fan tosses his beer at Victorino, dousing him and also hitting him with the plastic cup. Victorino held onto the ball, but looked pretty pissed. I had always heard that the Cubs had some of the best fans in baseball, but I am DISGUSTED with this guys demonstration of lack of class. I would expect this from buckeye fans, but come on Wrigley, you're better than this.

I used to hate Red Sox nation, but then I rode the Red Line near Addison one day, and the Cub fans are way worse. They are all the Chicago Yuppies who know nothing about baseball who get drunk and go to the game because its the cool thing to do. They are always picking fights with non Cub fans and just obnoxious around young kids. Arguably the worst fan base in MLB.

If you think Wrigley Field is a shithole, you have no idea what baseball is all about. What would you prefer? Ted Turner stadium, where you can buy pink Braves t-shirts and hear noise piped in from loudspeakers between innings? How can you possibly appreciate the purity of Michigan stadium and still diss on Wrigley field?

What is Tiger Stadium but an updated version of all the parks that were created in the 60s and 70s like Riverfront Stadium and Three Rivers in Pittsburgh. If you want to remain authentic, stand up for old Tiger Stadium, which was a killer park if you didn't have to sit behind a pylon. And this business about "fake" Cubs fans is stupid. Chicago is a great city, and Wrigley field is a cool place to go. Let the people have their fun. The concept of the "authentic" fan is for the most part a myth.

Puhhhleeze. This is homerism at best. Wrigley and Fenway are baseball's holy spots. Michigan stadium is one of the best venues in college football. But the two are not comparable. Partly because of the fact that there are so many stadiums in college football. Partly because vey little is unique about Michigan stadium other than it's mammoth size.

I'd say it is better than Tiger Stadium was. There's a couple small things that kind of suck, like view obstructions and a small concourse, but as far as a stadium experience, it can be a good time. I've had a great trip and a pretty crappy one. The great trip came in the storm/tornado delay last August. Fans were all good even though I was acting like a drunken idiot cheering on my team. The bad came the August before when my team had a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the eighth. They went up 2-1 on a D. Lee homer and me and the family of five in front of me were pelted by peanuts, ice, and trash. The family, the kids were 8-12, had to leave because they didn't feel their kids were safe. The fans next to me felt sympathy and were cool about me being an opposing fan, but they weren't going to tell their fellow cub fans to stop.

if by "best fans in baseball" you meant a bunch of wannabe yuppies and suburbanites getting, like, so totally wasted dude before they go to the sweet bars across the street and watch a UFC fight, then yes, you are correct.

It's all good man. I've got a lot of friends who are cubs fans, it can just be a little annoying living in the area and having to put up with these out-of-towners/yuppies who come into the neighborhood to get shitfaced and try to start fights and do the whole bro brah sweet-dude-sweet routine. Not to mention the female cubs "fans" - anyway, if the cubs are your team I totally get that, I'm just not personally a huge fan of the cubs/wrigleyville scene.

The Cubs having the best fans in baseball is pure rubbish. The only reason people say they do is because they sell out every game even though the team is usually pretty bad. A lot of people (though not all) go to games purely to be able to say they were at the Cubs game, not because they want to watch a baseball game. There certainly are good, knowledgeable Cubs fans out there, but they are the minority.

You are sooooo right... except that they are 2-time Central defending champs. Also, for a board that prides itself on "Don't let one bad apple disgrace an entire football program (Boren, Wermers, Feagin, etc.) how quick you turn on others. I am a season nights-and-weekend ticket holder at Wrigley. That guy should be dragged out and beaten. Just like all other fans (but for Buckeyes screaming "F-you" at old ladies in Michigan shirts) there are always d-bags in the crowd. Wrigley sells out because the stadium is in the middle of one of the best urban neighborhoods in the nation. Fans come from all over for fun and baseball, are very passionate about the Cubs and are knowledgeable about the game. I've seen many Cubs fans actually fight other Cubs fans that embarrass themselves and the Cubs ... they police their own. This guy probably got ratted out real fast and was escorted out of the stadium. Guaranteed.

Or, the first one tossed was just as annoying as the culprit... and the crowd didn't care that he got tossed. I've seen groups of 2 and 4 all get escorted out because one person in the group is throwing stuff or picking a fight. Crowd around points to 2-3 guys and says "those are the guys picking the fight" when it's mostly one pain-in-the-ass. Guilty by association.

I just want to reply respectfully to your comment about my comment. The Cubs are indeed two-time defending NL Central champs, but in my lifetime (I'm 24), the Cubs have been bad much more than they have been good, thus my "Cubs are usually pretty bad comment." So I stand by that statement, even though recently they've had some regular season success. You also said, "...for a board that prides itself on "Don't let one bad apple disgrace an entire football program (Boren, Wermers, Feagin, etc.) how quick you turn on others." Nowhere in my post did I mention anything about the incident tonight. Being a White Sox fan, I would be a huge hypocrite if I did. Idiots are everywhere and every team has them. I merely pointed out my opinion why I do not believe the Cubs have the best fan base in baseball. In my personal opinion, the best fan bases I've come across are the Cardinals, and as much as it pains me to say, the Twins.

... then I respect your opinion as it comes from a deep place of historical hatred and resentment. And at least it is based on something besides blind exagerations and baseless stereotypes. Now that we understand each other... we will meet at Madison and State at exactly 12:05pm tomorrow to fist fight.

I can't make it. I have to go to my blue-collar job, so that means I can't take a long lunch from my daddy's law firm to head up to Wrigleyville. ...I kid, I kid. But for the record, my opinion doesn't come from a deep place of historical hatred and resentment, but rather many a Cubs fan that probably still think that Sammy Sosa plays right field for them.

Public transportation in Chicago is fantastic, and you're a pussy if you think otherwise. And just because one Cubs fan is a dick doesn't mean Wrigley field, or Cubs fans, are in any way worse than other baseball fans in the league. Wrigley field is the best park in America, period.

I'm sorry for being a prick. I've been a Cubs fan since I was born, and I hate to see them fall apart again, which seems to be happening now. I agree, though, that there are way too many suburbanites who pretend to like the Cubs because it's fashionable, and they act like idiots at the games. Still, there are legitimate cubs fans who know baseball and feel pain when their team continues to suck year after year. Just when it seems like the tide is about to turn, things go sour. I won't diss on my fellow Michigan fans again, I promise.

They might have a higher average of obnoxious fans than some teams but that doesn't make the whole fan base bad. I've been to Wrigley 4 or 5 times and I don't remember seeing anyone out of order. Even though some fans are obnoxious, the fans are a lot more enthusiastic than most baseball fans and there's a great atmosphere at Wrigley, especially in comparison to Comerica Park, which is one of the only other parks I've been to. And as far as Wrigley "not being a nice ballpark", if you want to go to a park with a huge HD scoreboard and a lot of modern accessories, Wrigley Park is not for you. Wrigley is one of the few parks, along with Fenway, that maintains its old traditions and Cubs fans wouldn't have it any other way. When a team has that large of a fan base, there are also going to be more obnoxious fans than teams with smaller fan bases.
