OT- Bob Griese retires from broadcasting
Bob's hanging them up after 29 years behind the mic

I always loved watching him comment on Brian's games at the Big House, and I think that he did a great job of being both a Dad/Fan and a color guy, he wasn't afraid to call it like it is, positive or negative. I think the "Proud Papa" moment with Keith Jackson was one of the moments that stand out to me from that Rose Bowl,
Thanks Bob!

Why couldn't it be Musburger instead?

I remember being so happy when CBS canned him, and I went to talk about it with a friend at work, who told me ABC had hired him. Oof. That was a soul dong punch before I even knew the term.
Happy trails to Bob.

I always have thought he was mediocre at best. Though I do agree with the OP that he handled the thing with Brian very well and classily. And was a great player of course.

I was about to post, thank you.
There was a rumor on twitter this morning about a longtime broadcaster retiring. I was hoping it would be someone like Lee Corso, and I'm sad to see that it's Griese. I always liked his calling of the games, and by that I mean I never noticed when it was him. He didn't ever do anything to make me notice him, which was great.

He was one of my favorite color-commentators -- no fluff, just good classic announcing. I will definitely miss him. Thankfully Brian is basically his clone.

I liked bob too. Loved him and keith jackson together. Brian is realy good too. I worked with him at the Illinois game and he was great. The ESPN crew that works with him every week love him. He is following dads foot steps.

Washington State fans still complain about that 1 second...
Thanks for all the memories, Bob. You were a good one.

Do they still talk about that blatant OPI? Because they would have never been in that situation were it not for the uncalled PI.

May you enjoy your retirement tacos.

You had to love that quote by Bob Griese in the 96 Ohio State game.
"Ohio State better get after the quarterback, send some blitzers, confuse him."
Later that night, he watched the game again and thought to himself, "Wow. I'm telling them to attack my son. I can't believe it!"

reports indicate that Craig James struck him with a light saber and he evaporated with nothing but a robe falling to the ground. Brian was very upset but left with his friends to announce another day.

Bob Griese wasn't all that insightful of a color guy, and he seemed to get tongue-tied a lot. But, he was always very professional and never tried to call attention to himself during the broadcast with "clever" nicknames (I'm looking in your direction, Tim Doyle) or catch phrases. That alone made him one of the best.

One of my favorite announcers growing up. Him and Keith Jackson did many UM games in the 90s.

Lost his fastball about 10 years ago and I think hurt his reputation. Or I was just less discerning when I was 12.

"Bob Griese- your thoughts?"
February 3rd, 2011 at 5:58 PM ^
Understood. I was never a big fan, he simply and continuously used his personal accolades and personal stories ahead of the game and his colleagues. To his behalf I think he had a good repoire with the coaches combined with playing the game, et al. More folks would possibly be more critical if we omit the 97 season from memory.

I enjoyed it when he covered games. I will miss hearing him on saturdays.

Now its time for brian to step into his place.
