OT: Bethune Cookman - Ed Reed update

Submitted by MgoBlueprint on January 23rd, 2023 at 9:59 PM

There was a post on Sunday about Ed Reed’s final team meeting. There were varied comments on here about Reed’s reaction and motives.

It looks like the frustration that Ed Reed voiced was shared by many.

My best attempt at linking a tweet. My embedding game is weak.

That is really sad for those kids.  Having a Hall of Famer come and coach can really turn around a program and bring visibility to it. I have no idea what shape the facilities are in, but if the concern is shared between coaches and students and the BOT is unwilling to upgrade them, then maybe they shouldn't have a football team to begin with.

A lot of smaller colleges are in financial distress and football is often costly. Otoh, football is tied to homecoming, campus culture, fundraising, and marching bands, so it's  not so easy to just get rid of. Also, for some HBCUs, the marching band is a bigger deal than the football team, but I don't know how feasible it is to have a marching band without football.

It’s amazing anyone goes there at all. One look at those moldy dorm rooms should send everyone packing. I can’t believe this is even happening in this country.

College athletics is an arms race.  Facilities which have been built with slides, putt putt golf courses, bunk beds, etc. for the exclusive use of certain teams - do not, IMO, help turn student athletes into responsible adults.

What is the purpose of college and higher education?

HBCU’s have played a strong role in educating our youth.  And, their endowments or funding, make it difficult, if not impossible, to invest in athletic facilities which compete with Power Five conference schools to attract youth.

It’s time to have a serious discussion about what is important for our future.

BH, unfortunately, I agree you.  And, the NCAA under Emmert has been “asleep at the wheel” to the long term detriment of both competition and collegiate athletics.

NIL is just another example of the “$” involved  - and, will make it increasingly more difficult for non P5 institutions to draw prospects and compete at the highest level.

And, this ties into recruiting - IMO.  That topic deserves its own thread.
