Open Thread – Sochi Olympics, Final Day/Cool Stories

Submitted by MGoGrendel on

S-O-S!! Spoiler results, but you’ve been looking the whole time anyway

HOT. COOL. YOURS.  And we can add: OVER.

Russia looks like they will win the overall medal count and most Gold’s.  US should finish #2 overall.  We’ve had some disappointments and some surprising wins.  Shaun White drops out of Slopestyle to focus on the Halfpipe and Sage Kotsenburg unexpectedly wins Gold in Slopestyle! What are your favorite Olympic moments?

Some of today’s events:

  • Men’s Hockey  – CAN v. SWE at 7:00 EST for the Gold
  • Bobsled – Four Manfinals with United States 1 in contention
  • Cross Country Skiing – Men’s 50 km
  • Closing Ceremonies

Your moment of Zen: Therese Johaug of Norway; Cross Country Skiing

Not just a pretty face, she was a Gold Medalist in 2010! She took home a Silver and Bronze medal this year.

There were over 220 events this year with more that 7,000 athletes participating. Both are records for the Winter Olympics. Many athletes attend knowing they have a very slim chance to win, but are trilled to participate. Others are there for one reason - take home the Gold. Ever four years some David takes down a Goliath. The trill of victory and agony of defeat for sure.

I believe what MGoGrendel has done here should be the format for Olympic threads going forward actually. I know that between Winter and Summer, that's only every other year basically, but I thought about it yesterday afternoon and think that the unified open thread / spoiler thread is probably a good move going forward. Save for significant events in which the US is involved - such as the hockey open threads - these have been a good catch-all.

Thanks again, MGoGrendel.

For all the stories about how Sochi was unready, in the end it seems like these Olympics went off pretty well.  The guy running the #SochiProblems Twitter account apparently ran out of material after a couple days and just started tweeting about the competition.

But did that hotel with the yellow tap water ever get that fixed?
