S-O-S!! Spoiler results are posted here

Do not continue past the picture below if you don’t want to know early results.

Reminders:

  • MgoPosters can use this thread to post results and discuss winners, controversies, etc. that will be shown later in the day during prime time.
  • If you start an Open Thread, please add a picture that shows the International beauty of these Olympics, including name, country, and sport.

Person of Interest:

Austria's Matthias Mayer, Olympic Gold Medal winner in downhill skiing.  He’s the 7th Austrian to win this Olympic event, making him an instant celebrity.  Think former Michigan quarterback and three time Super Bowl Champ Tom Brady celebrity.  When Matthias is old, he will be Joe Namath popular, like those six Austrian champs before him.  His dad, Helmut Mayer, won the Silver Medal in the 1988 Olympics in Calgary.

Here he is going 80+ mph downhill on a sheet of ice:

He tucks his legs like that because of his hugh cojones.

Your moment of Zen: Silje Norendal, Norway, snowboarder - slopestyle

I've never been a huge fan of these Winter Olympic sports but one thing I MUST watch every four years is the Men's Downhill. Those guys are insane. Of course the hokcey is awesome too.

If at any point today you can get access to streaming coverage, NBC has been doing a pretty good job of getting replays up fairly timely. Just finished watching / listening to some of the women's prelims in curling while in my office working on other things. All the site asked me for was my Comcast login to verify - I assume it is the same for different providers.

I can get the streaming coverage at work, but I'm starting on my rotation of 12 hours shifts in an ER.  It's, uh, not an ideal place to be watching live sports.  Nor do I want to then stay up late to start watching at midnight, or get up early for 5 am watching.  So yeah, stupid olympics picked the worst time for the only sport I really want to watch to start.  There goes by past, get drunk and watch curling traditions.  Stupid grown up life, and stupid olympic schedules.  Bah.

The only problem is that I don't have cable and thus have been unable to watch replays. I tried liking for a way to pay for an Olympics streaming subscription but nothing. Firstrow works to watch live, but given time difference I was trying to watch replays on nbc or something like that.

If their game this morning is any indication (def. Germany 11-8), Canada's men curlers are going to be fun to watch. They seem to like to have lots of rocks in play, making for high scoring and crazy shots at the end.

I know not every reader is in the Detroit area, and even fewer have Comcast, but I just discovered that I get CBC in HD on channel 999. Previously I believe I only got SD on channel 99, so if I wanted to watch the Olympics or Hockey Night in Canada it would be relatively crappy quality. Now there are even more options to watch the Olympics non-stop all day, as I did yesterday!

EDIT: Can we add a link to the NBC streaming coverage in the daily OP? It's not easy to find on the NBC website, especially if you want to watch replays without getting spoilers.

Ok, just checked the men's curling score, and they're already down 5-1?!  It was Schuster wasn't it?  I just know it; it's always Schuster.  Wasn't he not supposed to throw 4th this games?

He wasn't shooting great, but it wasn't always his fault. For example in the 7th end, he had to attempt a tricky double take-out to attempt to score 2. He missed by a fraction and one of the opponent's rocks stayed in. Basically, he had to hit a yellow rock and knock it into another yellow rock at just the right angle such that both yellow rocks go out. Instead, the first yellow rock hit the second on the nose and stuck, giving Norway 1 instead of the US 2, a 3 point swing in a game decided by 3. The only knock on him there is he picked a bad side to miss on - had he missed a bit to the right his shooter may have rolled in and at least picked up 1.

So that's a tough shot. In the killer 3rd end, when Norway picked up 3, Shuster wrecked his shots on a really clogged up area in front of the house. Again, the shots he was called to make were tough. He did mess up pretty badly on easier shots in ends 1 and 10 though - what's worrisome there is that a couple of those misses were bad issues with draw weight, his bugaboo last Olympics.

In general, it looked like Norway's skip had easier shots all day. And that's set up by the shotmaking of the first 3 players. Norway's 2nd and 3rd outshot their counterparts on the US team, and that tends to put the skip in bad spots.

USA and Canada and simply much more talented than any other womans hockey team. Hopefully USA can bring home gold.
