Some good swims by Americans this morning. Woman's road race and some others going on. Of note, they've suspended rowing for high winds.

Well...Well...Well

Yeah...did not look good at all. Compared to the men's race - still fewer crashes, but that one looked the worst by far over the last 2 days. Not sure I want to see another replay, but not really sure how it happened either, she was heading into the turn and it seems like a wheel locked up based on how she flipped straight forward.

Dutch cycling tweeted she was now conscious. That was a terrible crash, and seeing her laying in the same exact crumpled position when another camera went by 30 seconds later was one of the most horrific things I've seen in cycling.

Agreed. I had trouble watching the rest of the race (which was thrilling) after that. Could tell it threw VdV off on the commentary, too--he knew. I'm glad she appears to be conscious. . Really the only thing in cycling I've seen worse was pictures of the Wouter Weylandt crash, but those weren't clear views. Reminded me of the worst things I've seen in auto racing.

You heard very wrong. Brazil does not treat its sewage, it goes straight from the "treatment centers" (which don't actually treat it) to the canals and rivers, to the ocean. This is a very well documented fact. Do your research before saying stuff.

"I've heard"

"I'm hearing"

"People are saying"

Did everyone see the gymnast breaking his leg on his landing yesterday? Reminds me of the Louisville basketball player from a few years ago. Not for the queasy...hope he has a fast recovery.

The cycling course just looks brutal between all the hairpin turns and the elevation changes and so forth. I can totally understand why quite a few riders bowed out after that second-to-last incline before the headed back down towards Rio yesterday. Certainly not for those looking for a nice, easy ride through an authentic Atlantic rainforest.

Whoa - a Dutch rider just had a terrifying-looking crash in the women's road race.  She flipped off her bike.  Hopefully she is OK.

I sincerely hope that dutch cyclist didn't die, because she very likely could have. She took that curb head first at almost 60 mph.. Damn that shook me up seeing it

It's hard to concentrate on the end of this bike race not knowing what happened to Van Vleuten, that crash was ugly. The end of the race is fairly exciting, but jus can't concentrate and really hope the Dutch rider gets the medical attention she needs.

This happens all the time in cycling.  Going alone on a solo attack is a gamble, as you have to work a lot harder to keep up a high speed than you would in a group of riders.   Frequently the leader runs out of gas near the finish as the fresher sprinters take over.  It was a worthwhile risk for her as she isn't a sprinting specialist, but she didn't have enough in reserve to make the line.

She wasn't solo though...

Mara attacked on the climb... and handful of riders went with her.  She forced the pace when many of the other women weren't willing to do it.

Mara got hung out to dry when AV crashed.

If AV hadn't wrecked, the two of them would have teamed up to nearly the end.  AV may have won in such a situation though as she's Mara's nemesis.

One would have thought 39 seconds on the descent would have been enough.  Poor gal.  She's #1 here though!

Aerodynamics don't lie, man. A single rider is going full gas all the time while the group of three only goes full gas 1/3 of the time, only expending 70% as much energy and recover for you next "turn." It was actually a heroic effort to hold the chasing 3 for as long as she did.
