Ohio State Still Looking to Play?

Submitted by DTOW on August 12th, 2020 at 2:53 PM

I’d post a link but I’m a bit preoccupied at the moment. Ryan Day just came out and said Ohio State is still looking at options to try and play this fall. There’s zero chance they get kicked out of the B1G if the do and I’m not sure how they think they can go about doing this but it raises a serious question for us.

If they somehow find a way around this mess do we try to do the same? Would the University even allow that? I would handicap it at about 95% that Ohio State doesn’t pull this off but if they somehow manage to do so and we don’t follow suit the uproar from the original announcement would pale in comparison to what this would cause.

What if Michigan were a powerhouse Top 3 rated team with at least a 50/50 shot of winning it all? How would we feel if the season were snatched away by the college presidents? My guess is there would be a lot more outrage over this.

While I despise and detest the evil buckeyes, I really don't blame them for throwing out this trial balloon.

They are a top 3 rated team with a chance to win it all almost every year. We are that good maybe twice a decade.  Apples to oranges.

Their outrage is not based on how good they are this year (they have been a title contender for 2 decades now), it's based on the fact that the identity of their university revolves around their football team and its success.

Ohio state can do whatever they want and the big ten will let them. Just another reason to hate those fuckers.

I always maintain that if the players want play, let them play. They are adults and can make decisions for themselves. If they are under 18, ask their parents for consent.

Talk all the shit you want, he competes for nation titles and playoff spots while Michigan competes for 3rd place in the east.

This is a non-starter for every team in the BIG.  Each school signs a "grant of rights" to the BIG which allows the BIG and only the BIG to negotiate TV contracts for each school and their sports.  Ohio State can play, but either no one will be able to televise it or the BIG will sue the crap out of them, the school they play and the league they play in for the money made from the one game + more.  If there is no one in the stands and it isn't on TV, did it even happen?  It wouldn't be anything more than a scrimmage.

Well, no organization in Ohio is more important than the football team, so it would not surprise me if they get to play.

They will play if the SEC/ACC/Big 12 decide to play. Think of it as Notre Dame 2.0. They only care about football down there and will play local rocket football teams just to please that ratchet fanbase

OSU can want to play, but in actuality they pretty much have their hands tied on contractional basis as one poster already pointed out. Maybe the Big Ten would look the other way but I doubt it regardless of how much influence OSU has in the conference. You would think they would at least try and keep the illusion of impartiality.

since it's a job requirement for the OSU HC to be a leaky douche bag, RD is just fulfilling his mission statement

Like I said in the Tom Mars thread, I'll believe CFB teams will play if and only if they actually play.  All other conjecture is simply posturing to remain open to the possibility of playing.  Everyone wants to play, but no one so far has shown ready to take on the risk.  I doubt there will be any games actually played by any college football teams.

True leaders. You are not getting a virus let alone a cold sitting in a stadium. Proper human hygiene goes a long ways.

This is pretty ridiculous. Coaches don't make the call - ADs and university presidents do. OSU voted not to play in the Fall, so it doesn't really matter what Ryan Day thinks. If it did matter what coaches think, both OSU and Michigan would be playing in the Fall. But in the end it's not their call - all they can do is advise the people who do make the decisions on this subject.

Day is pushing for the Big to give details on a spring season, scholarship etc. Some thoughts being floated is pro dome stadiums being used for several games each weekend for a January through March season. But there is no confirmation on any interests of the powers that be on any such schedule.

This would be a doubtful scenario given that is too soon to hope they will like the covid numbers any better in Jan 21.  And its really a winter schedule not spring.

Days suggestion is posted on 11w. I can't blame a coach to try to hang on to his talent but most of us realize its a pipe dream to think football will be played before next fall.

Don’t blame them. I don’t think it’ll work considering the hoops they’d have to jump through with the conference to get there, but if anyone would do it it’d be them.
