New York "M" bar - Prof Thom's?

Submitted by zinzarin on
I'm looking for a good bar in the city to watch Saturday's contest against Notre Dame. I've been hearing good things about Professor Thom's. Is Prof Thom's a Michigan bar, or is it just a sports bar that has a strong M crowd? Is there anywhere else I should consider?

bar to watch games in. Solid beer and food. It's where I would go. They have some reserved tables upstairs, but is pretty much 1st come. Metro is bigger and also a great place. Go to the bar that is closer to where you'll hang out afterward.

http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/new-york-bars I find Prof Thom's a tough place to actually follow (watch & hear) the game given how crowded it gets, often with people more interested in the social part of the day rather than the football part. But, depending for what you're looking, it might work well. I'm 33 and I like to watch with a good pro-Michigan crowd, but to have HD screens with good sightlines and volume at audible levels. So, I would go to The Forum if I went to a bar. But that's just one man's opinion.

I'm upstate in Middletown right now. Are there any bars in Orange or Sullivan County? It's not worth an entire thread but, just wondering. There's nothing on the alumni website.

Prof Thom's is a good bar -- one of the several owners went to U of M so it is a "Michigan bar" but it's primarily a Red Sox bar (some of the other owners are Sox fans). But they're one of the "offical" places, so don't worry about that. I personally really like the place but it can get pretty ridiculously crowded for game-time itself, heads-up there.

i may have posted something like this last week, but: 1. metro 53 - more crowded, crowd isn't the best, but TVs everywhere, many large ones, you will be able to see everything. 2. professor thom's - better crowd and slightly less crowded, but fewer TVs, smaller TVs and a worse overall viewing experience. can be great if you get a table with a tv on it. on balance i'd choose metro53. you're going to watch a game and you're better able to accomplish that objective at metro53.

Another good place in NYC is The Hill (in the low 30s on 3rd Avenue). It gets a strong M crowd and the owner, Dennis, is M class of '96. He just opened a new place in Chelsea called The Ainsworth that he is trying to turn into a big M sports venue as well.

If you like people playing beer pong during kickoff with tiny screens and nobody really watching the game, Thoms is for you. Otherwise hit up Metro 53. For Meech basketball go to The Hill.
