Wait what?  Is there something I missed on Jeter? Seems like this should be a big deal. Was expecting big things from him, and at the very least setting a floor of acceptable for our DT rotation.

EDIT: TIL that however much you come to MgoBlog, its never enough.  Thanks @MaizeBlueA2 for the info

I’m going to try to be optimistic about the fact that Jeter and Speight are not on the roster.    I hope this means that the freshman - Benny, Rooks and Iwunnah were all looking good and Jeter and Speight felt that they were going to be pressed for playing time.

This is not based on any inside knowledge but rather my belief that spring is a time for optimism.

@BursleysFinest - you may have just missed it. It's been known for awhile that he wasn't returning. Kris Jenkins is going to have to step up in a major way.

Michael Barrett is back though.

...also I don't think Jeter and Speight have anything to do with talent on the roster. I think they were just ready to move on.

I know Jeter has a family to take care of, I don't blame him. They'll be missed, for sure.

@Everyone asking about DTs. I would expect we would make a run for guys after the spring. There's going to be guys who don't like where they are on the depth chart (which you don't love), but there will also be guys who just needed to stay where they are for the spring so they could graduate...then they plan to transfer.  There will be guys looking to go to bigger schools from that second category as well (your Mike Smith/Devonte Jones types for football).

I think we see what we have this spring, let guys get the reps...then find one of those grad transfers who've PROVEN it at the G5 level and want to prove it at the highest level.

Last year we went after Tony Fair (UAB) and Jonn Ridgeway (Illinois St.)...whiffed on both, BOTH started for SEC teams (Auburn and Arkansas) and looked GREAT.

We have to land one of these types this year. No disrespect to the kid at Missouri who is leaving because he's not in the 2-deep.  Get someone who's already done it and done it well.

*Let me explain. I see a couple of scenarios for NB. I realize Turner is the best CB.

Scenario 1: Turner stays at CB for the duration. Moore goes from FS to NB when you want a NB...and Paige or Kolesar replaces him at FS.

Scenario 2: Moore and Moten remain exclusively at Safety. Turner and Green are your starting Cornerbacks. Michael Barrett is in playing the extra LB spot like he did at times this year. When you want the NB, you lift Barrett and put the winner of W. Johnson/J. McBurrows in Turner's spot...and you slide Turner into the slot to play NB. So Turner doesn't actually come off the field, he's just doing what Jourdan Lewis used to do at times, move inside so the #3 CB could play outside.

I think it's likely that either Turner or Moore will have to slide between a couple of positions. Neither McBurrows or Johnson is a NB and I don't see Jones or Berry being ready to be a starter (though if anyone does, I'll put money on Berry...that kid is going to be GREAT, IMO).

I don't follow recruiting and practice reports as much as many here do, but this looks like a real solid depth chart. It seems we're getting back to the point of being able to weather an injury or illness here and there. I just hope it's all good depth.
