ND's Riley Sheahan going pro (for the Wings)

Submitted by ChasingRabbits on

And so starts the defection watch for college hockey players.  hopefully the UM watch does not start for a couple weeks.

Sheahan will start out in Grand Rapids while a contract is being ironed out with the wings.

Seems like a kid that can help the wings pretty soon.  Wings lack size up front, he does not.

He may have made the descision based on depth, he would have been heading into his senior year with Tynan and Lee ahead of him at the center position.

Next year is the final year Michigan will play notre dame in the regular season at least in hockey. Red said the "so-called rivalries with miami and notre dame won't continue after next season unless it's in the NCAA Tournament". Hopefully this will effect notre dame and they can continue to blow goats next year as they did this season. Ya know, with their preseason #1 ranking. How did that work out again? Ohhhh cya!

Red is spot on with "so-called rivalries."  It's the same story in every sport: everyone who gets even one victory in the series wants to see Michigan as a "rivalry game."  If Michigan returned the favor, they would have a schedule full of "rivalry games."

Great call by Red.

I like it, but it scares me.  Michigan doesn't need to play Notre Dame or Miami.  Especially Miami, with their style of play and their reprehensible coach.

However, I don't want to see Michigan playing 12 games a year against Atlantic Hockey teams and the dregs of the ECAC.  Michigan needs some permanent high-level non-conference rivalries after they change conferences.  It would be nice to get a team on the level of Boston College, Boston University or North Dakota on our future schedules for a couple of games every year.

Boston College plays 1-2 games each year against Notre Dame.  Now that they will be in the same conference, maybe Michigan can take Notre Dame's place on BC's non-conference schedules.

I doubt we have any defections *knocks on wood*, I can't really see any of our guys leaving at least this year, none of them are NHL starters, and spending 2-3 years in College really wouldn't be all that different from the AHL. I figure having Red as the coach and developer makes up that the AHL has more talent etc

He is signing an Amateur Tryout Contract so that he does not count against the 50-contract limit. This does mean that he's forgoing his college career, though. He'll sign his pro contract once the season is done.

Now he goes from being that d-bag from Notre Dame who deserved to be suspended for the whole Michigan series to being one of my favorite Red Wings prospects.
