"NCAA should have canceled Men's BB Season"

Submitted by aa_squared on January 5th, 2021 at 6:32 PM

I was surfing the radio on the way home, and heard the lead resident DB on 97.1 say that the

"NCAA should have canceled Men's BB Season"

His reason was b/c:

Duke, Kentucky, Villanova, Louisville, and Moo U were all having bad seasons, and that Covid is disrupting all of it combined. (Well maybe those teams suck.)

He cried that they would play the NCAA Tournament at community college gyms and various other places. (As if anyone would be allowed to attend anyway.)

Never mentioned the fact that Michigan is 9 - 0

I completely understand why I only surf through that station, and now confirm that I will not listen to it on the way home anymore, let alone any of the other hours.

What a complete DB.

It is interesting that everyone wanted the football season canceled when the season went to pot and used COVID as the reason.  Now that Men's BB is undefeated and cases are actually much higher, everyone who wants to cancel for the same reasons, is an a hole.

It is odd.

Isn’t this the same comment & excuse people were using for Michigan football?

Should’ve just canceled the season. It doesn’t really count because of COVID. We only sucked because it was a weird year. Etc....

Fans? Perhaps some said that. Coaches or players? No freaking way! But guess what? In basketball, coaches K, Izzo and Calipari have all whined about the season being played. You want to know the common denominator with all of those names? Their teams suck ass right now. As far as Louisville, I permanently hate them, they have a vacated national championship that belongs to us that was handed to them because that one dude broke his leg and the NCAA was sucking Pitino off better than that restaurant whore he was banging.

Villanova is interesting b/c they did this: decided after their Dec 23 game to have a "holiday break, a lull that includes three days of visits from players’ families"

https://www.inquirer.com/college-sports/villanova/villanova-wildcats-college-basketball-marquette-family-visits-10-day-break-coach-jay-wright-20201222.html

They have not played a game since, due to a big COVID outbreak, cancelling 3 games and won't play another one until at least mid-January.

I completely understand thinking it is a good idea to have a mental health/family break, and they put some good effort into this (e.g., providing space on campus for families to visit; thinking about precautions) but these weren't supervised, had an eating component (a big spreader risk, unless you are quite careful, which is really hard for families who haven't seen each other) and only had 4 days of quarantine (need at least 7 due to lags in when tests can detect the virus in certain situations).

Basketball during a pandemic is a challenging situation, but even Coach K knows that if March Madness doesn't happen this year, the billion-plus dollars the NCAA will lose will cripple the sport. So we'll have a season and a tourney even if it's a 17-2 Villanova vs a 26-5 Gonzaga in the finals with numerous tourney games cancelled along the way.

Villanova and (inexplicably) Duke are ranked. L'ville is decent and UK has had average/bad seasons under Calipari before, so this is nothing new.

Plus, no Sparty slappies complained when they beat Duke in their library.

That is not what he said actually.  He said that they should take time off, make sure the players are safe, and get the tournament done in may.  He also said if duke, Kentucky, MSU are all under .500 they should be left out of the tournament.  Not sure what you were hearing but you’re pretty far off base.

and I hate Valentis takes when it comes to anything Michigan but he was spot on in calling the ncaa out on its hypocrisy in saying it’s not about money and it’s about player safety which is bullshit.

Thanks for this info.

I have no issue with this plan, but it should have been implemented from the start (not Valenti's fault, obviously). To adjust now would be difficult, particularly the switch in the tourney time -- TV money drives the bus and does CBS want a tourney in May?

I tend to think they'll just bumble through, like college football has done, and hope for the best.

For me, this feels like nothing compared to college football. College football was an absolute mess with postponements, decisions from conferences, etc.

College basketball, at least in my cheap straw poll has had very few cancellations or postpones. It pales in comparison to football.

That's not what he said,  but selective hearing makes for better blog slop  I guess.

Main point was for a short delay in the season , and pick up after another month or so, pushing the tournament til May

Carry on with the version you prefer.

Pretty soon you'll see more and games postponed.

Why not just play as many games now as can, then, and postpone the ones you can't. If they have to push the tourney back to May because of the amount of postponed games, then so be it.. you're in the same situation, but at least had the possibility of getting it in on time. If you push it back a month and start having postponement, then you're now looking at June for the tourney.

I mean, I don't necessarily think it's a good idea to run a basketball season after how bad the college football season did with COVID, but I come to that determination not because some perennial powers are having a rough go of it.

<Edit> Removed my comment, which was fine, but as other posters pointed out that Valenti actually didn't say what the OP asserted, no need to point out his trolling faults here.

His pay was greatly diminished during this pandemic and that’s why they added his Sparty bro cohost and he isn’t doing his additional shows. He also sold his old home (next door to my brother) during the middle of the pandemic to “downsize.”

We were literally saying the exact same thing about the football season. And for 9 out of 10 people, it wasn’t because of COVID concerns. It was because the team sucked. COVID was just a convenient excuse to hide behind.

I stopped listening to all talk-radio several years ago. I only listen to podcasts or Spotify. I can't imagine how Valenti can do that job four hours every day, especially since he likes to bag on bad teams and literally every Detroit team completely blows right now. You'd have to be drunk to take calls from a bunch of unemployed used car salesmen after another Lions loss. It's exhausting to listen to, much less have it as a job.
