He's a Sparty alum so makes sense. Lot's of "video coach" jobs in his past.

I thinks it's a "meh" hire  but who knows, maybe he'll do well. I sure hope not

Their previous hire years ago of league commissioner who hadn't coached college kids in 20 years remains one of the worst hires ever seen at a major hockey program.  Set them back about 15 years.  They haven't even been in the NCAA tournament for a decade.

MSU: Hires alum from USNTDP head coaching job.

MSU: Fires that guy.

MSU: Hires alum from USNTDP head coaching job. Maybe THIS time it'll work!

I know, sample size, yada yada, but it still makes me laugh.

I think even more amusing because at least Danton Cole had 3 years as UAH's coach and seven leading the NTDP. Nightingale has several years of NHL video coaching and 2 years at the NTDP. Nightingale hasn't even recruited before

At the risk of jinxing this and resurrecting FYS hockey, this seems like it's far more likely to be an Anastos level hire than anything else and then how badly does that crater an already smoldering program? This could be really bad

Do you have someone in mind? Because my guess is that there are good options out there and available, including, possibly, former Western head coach Jeff Blashill. Guys like Jim Montgomery are kicking around in staff jobs.

I share the underwhelming response other people have. This seems like a "third time's the charm" type hire. I mean, maybe it winds up working. But what's to be optimistic about?

Interesting hire...

from what I can gather, this guy's career progression has been

  • SSM midget AA head coach (2008-10)
  • MSU Director of Hockey Ops (2010-14)
  • SSM 14U bantam head coach (2014-16)
  • Sabres video coach (2016-17)
  • Red Wings video coach (2017-19)
  • Red Wings assistant coach (2019-20)
  • USNTDP head coach (2020-22)

Certainly much better than hiring Tom Anastos. I'm not sure this is really any more impressive than hiring Danton Cole though. Looks like Nightgale has just a few years of on-ice coaching experience at a high level and really there are very few relevant data points to draw any conclusions from. SSM and the USNTDP are youth level super programs so he really has no track record of building anything at this point.

Good luck I guess

I'm guessing he had glowing recommendations from the Sabres and Wings and is seen as someone who may have an in with some of the nation's top talent that is coming through the USNTDP.  It'll be interesting to see how it all pans out.
