Stumbled upon this interesting stat today:

The first four games have given us plenty to nitpick, but the team has still played dominantly when you zoom out. I find this particularly impressive, given our offensive style and how few drives we've had relative to other teams. Of course, caveats about strength of schedule still apply, but it's a good reminder that plenty of teams that are soaking up praise (ex: Penn State, Georgia) have also had their share of slow starts and sloppy quarters, even against mediocre to bad competition.

I've definitely been a big nitpicker, but if you look on their first half drives:

ECU: 5 drives, 4 with points, 3 TD - 3/4/5, 80% success, 60% TD
UNLV: 3/3/4, 75%, 75%
BGSU: 2/2/5, 40%, 40% (eww)
RU: 2/2/4, 50%, 50%

Compared with 2022
CSU: 2/5/7, 71%, 29%
UH: 6/6/8, 75%, 75%
UConn: 4/5//8, 63%, 50%
UMd: 2/3/6, 50%, 33%

The big "issue" offensively this year is straight up how fast the games are going. half time scores - 29-0, 42-0, 38-0, 17-13, 23-0, 21-0, 14-6, 14-7. UNLV was as successful per drive as JJ's coming out party against Hawai'i and had half as many points and drives. Some of that is explosiveness but also...The clock rules are really having an impact.

I think Brian or Seth covered it in the podcast, but because of the new Clock Rules, Michigan needs to play with a bit more tempo.

I understand Jim wants to take the air out of the ball and go on those 7 to 8 minute drives. However, when we do that, we only have 7 or 8 possessions a game. What does that mean? Those "flukey" touchdowns such as the one Rutgers had on Saturday have a larger impact. Michigan doesn't need to go Oregon 20112, but they need to stop letting the play clock go down to 2 everytime.

If I was a neutral fan I’d say that Michigan has a dam good team. As a guy who eats sleeps and breathes, this time of year and team. I see the warts.

These are averages per game? Or overall for the season so far? It will be interesting to see how much the W-MSU game contributed to their number.

How does Michigan do game-by-game? Which teams get to 14+ point differential the earliest in a game? Those may or may not stay at 14+ point differential the rest of the game.

I'm not sure it's really limited to MGoBlog.  Regardless, it's a defense mechanism -- it mutes the responses.  It's harder to argue with somebody when their claim was merely that the stat was "moderately" interesting.

Personally, I'll take a slice of humility over the obvious clickbait crap.  Check out these 10 amazing NCAAF stats (You won't believe #4!)
