But doesn't it seem like he got off pretty easy for sending someone to the hospital? I mean Winston did something similar for MSU and at least spent some time in jail, which Milano won't have to do.

But compare the facts (or at least the purported facts). From reported accounts, Milano and Kampfer had more of an actual fight. Courts will treat those situations less seriously than a unilateral assault.
There isn't a huge legal distinction between the two, but judges have discretion in sentencing for a reason. Assault is one of those crimes that is more about the action than the result, so the fact that both victims ended up in the hospital is moo.

I feel bad for Kampfer but what is this about him abusing his gf? Did she ever say "Hey he was abusing me and I told Milano to threaten him"? I just don't really understand...

Because all of you were there and saw the incident to know what he deserved? I wasn't either, so I'll withhold judgment, but I'll trust the jury, and if I recall correctly, the judge said he thought even the misdemeanor conviction wasn't merited based on the evidence presented in court. There's a reason for our standards of evidence for conviction.

This means Milano can rejoin the team now, right? Despite what Kampfer says, I can't see Milano ever doing something like this again -- guys don't do this sort of thing twice, do they?

No eye witness fully corroborated Kampfer's story that he had his back turned when he was attacked. It is undisputed that Kampfer was manhandling his ex-girlfriend. And there is no doubt that "fighting words" were exchanged between Mssrs. Kampfer and Milano.
Then again, it is also undisputed that Kampfer walked away.
The jury probably thought that Milano was meat-ass-head, which, probably, he is. Then again, it's a bit refreshing to see at least one instance where a member of the 2008 football team did not miss a tackle.
