Mike Martin Jr Named FSU Head Coach
I don’t think Bakich was ever a serious candidate for the job in Tallahassee but it’s nice to know they won’t come knocking. That job is one he would have had to give serious consideration.
Mike Martin Jr. was named head coach of the Florida State Seminoles baseball team Friday, succeeding his father, who just concluded his 40th season in the role.
I get the feeling that the FSU fanbase won't be happy about this. Not to say they were clamoring for Bakich, just that they want fresh blood.
If a guy has been the coach for 40 years, him being able to name his son HC kinda is what it is.
I’m sure they think there are better candidates out there, but it’s hard to argue against an internal hire after the incredibly successful 40 year coach retires.
Yeah, but in the eyes of that fanbase, going to the CWS 17 times and not winning doesn't equal success. UF has a fraction of that history and has won it all. That eats at them.
I’m sure it does. But I can’t imagine a lot of national title winning coaches out there are available. And if you’re not going to get one of those handful of coaches, it’s hard to justify not promoting your legend’s son that has been on staff for 20 years
Hey, I'm not saying they're right or wrong. But Mike Martin Jr has never been a manager. He's unproven and taking over a premier program. And they never really conducted any kind of search--just straight to the nepotism.
...and just by pure luck, Jr will win it all next year!
He's been an assistant for 20 years, and daddy is 70. I'm sure Jr has plenty of experience running the program...
And that would be the case in 99% of similar situations. When someone’s at a place that long and end on a good note, they usually get a huge say in their successor. Only time they don’t is if it ends in scandal.
You gotta give us better reasons than nepotism.
I think you are right. I have a friend who owns a couple of sports bars and restaurants in Tallahassee. He is mad. Claims that FSU has been underachieving for years relative to the talent they pull in. Compares it to football the last few years.
Fresh blood? Dude just coached 40 straight years w at least 40 wins. I think they are just fine w things. That’s stability you don’t see these days.
They have underachieved a little, but it was Martin's right to go out when and as he saw fit. No one I know here in Tallahassee is happy that his son simply steps into the job, though. My nephew pitched for them. . . the whole business seemed pretty messy to me.
Eh. I'm not making an argument for whether FSU should or should not hire Mike Martin Jr. I don't give a shit who FSU hires to coach their baseball, football, women's basketball, men's volleyball, swimming and diving or whatever teams. I'm just telling you that they feel they should've won the damn thing years ago and see Martin as a great recruiter who blows big games through his limitations as a game manager.
Imagine if Michigan football consistently won 11-12 games a year, won the B1G every other year, consistently beat its rivals, went to the playoffs almost every year, reached the championship game in multiple years, pumped out dozens of draft choices every year, and has done this for 50 years under a handful of coaches BUT HAS NEVER ACTUALLY WON THE WHOLE DAMN THING. You'd be... um...skeptical if the school just hired his son without a proper search.
Good for FSU for keeping it in the family.
Is it?
Absolutely.
The odds that son maintains father's level of success are slim, which is better for other programs. So though the move is anti-democratic, it has an egalitarian outcome.
That's a fair point - haha!
Instead of another one of the Bowden family?
Thread title made me thing a certain Hoke era hero just became head coach at Ferris St
The sport in the title would be appropriate.
And helpful to those living under a rock.
Free shoes.
Keep the tradition alive.
He was a good DT.
I immediately took this as our old Mike Martin.
MARTIN SMASH
Still need to pay Bakich more. Cant have another Beilein situation.
I thought we were firing him though?
No, we fired Beilein. Luckily for him the Cavaliers picked him up, so he wasn't out of work long, and we don't have to feel badly about our decision to go in a different direction.
I can see why you're so bitter about that.
