the offense will steam roll them. Defensively I think we'll struggle during the first half and probably give up 17 points. In the 2nd half I think they'll give up no more than 7. Go Blue!
Michigan vs. Air Force Prediction Thread
I will make it through the first quarter without announcing "Time to start drinking."
But it's an afternoon game - why wait until after the game starts?
You can drink for good reasons too, you know.
There will be 1 or 2 groan-inducing plays where an Air Force RB goes streaking into the secondary when an assignment is missed.
We win 42-28 but everyone starts to feel worried (for real) about the D
45-20, I am worried that Air Force will make us dread what B1G offenses will do to our D-line.
Air Force will rack up a ton of yardage like they always do to every defense, and most will pronounce doom because our D-linemen will get cut by 250 pound dudes less than 6 feet tall at the line. None the less, they will not score a ton of points because it's a high varienence offense and a mistake or good play one time in a drive will crush it.
The offense will roll, but no one will care because it's "against Air Force". Everyone will still be doom and gloom, and we still won't know anything about this team after the game no matter what the score and yardage differentials are.
then start clicking. Denard gets four touchdowns total (two with his legs) for 300 yds of total offense. Devin gets a TD reception, and we see something actually happen with Amara Darboh. Bellomy has a good work-it-up-the-field set of possessions.
BWC looks great because he's not facing the functional equivalent of the Michigan 2016 OL.
Defense isn't overall perfect, because Air Force is Air Force, so they get a couple touchdowns.
Taylor Martinez's throwing motion unfixes itself for no apparent reason.
Do you mean Devin Smith or Devin Gardner?
45-14. The score will be 21-14 at half, but in the second half Mattison will make some changes and we will shut them down. Hopefully this home opener makes it all 4 quarters too!
We will not be physically overmatched like against Bama. However, there will be some missed assignments, poor angles and technique problems. The key to the rest of the season is if DR can develop a comfort level in the passing game and a better feel of when to scramble.
On a side note, I live in South Carolina and need to know, what is the best way to pick up the game on radio? I am not familiar with sirius or other pay services.
Thanks and Go Blue,
Not sure about Sirius, but MGoBlue.com always has free radio stream of the game online. And if you need to be mobile, I believe they also have an iPhone/Android app that you can download and listen to the game with.
Do they not have ABC/ESPN2 in SC?
Called "football radio"
myself unable to shake the Bama game and feel as though this game means anything. I wish that I did not have that feeling because I wait year around for college football to start and feel like it is already over to some extent.
Michigan by 24, I am just not sure what it means.
Time heals all wounds. Oh, and winning, too. If we win the next 5 then beat the crap out of Sparty on 10/20, you'll have forgotten all about the 'bama game.
For me, all it will take is settling into my seat in Section 18, Carl Grapentine, M Fanfare, The Victors, and the entrance of team 133. Wait, who did we play last week?.....
Oh come on man. Losing to Alabama does not mean the season is over. Lots of football still to be played.
telling myself that. I think I was in denial until like Tuesday and now I am passing through the other four stages.
Here's what you should tell yourself - we probably weren't going to win the national championship this year. That does not make it a failure. Last year, Oregon got beat up pretty bad by LSU (who was not as good as Bama, but close) and they were able to finish up their year by winning the Rose Bowl.
Would you be happy with winning the Rose Bowl? Because that's still totally on the table. Season far from over.
I would take that.
OK, this is helping. Your not by chance licensed to prescribe anti-depressants are you?
M front 7 initially has all kinds of trouble with AF's option and allows 3 long drives in the first half, but 2 of them end in field goals as AF does not have the horses to break big plays. They start to figure it out in the second half. Kovacs ends up with 15 tackles and T Gordon 10.
M offense pretty much has its own way with grossly undersized AF defense but stops itself a few times with penalties and other unforced errors.
the first defensive series vs. bama * 4 quarters.
37-20 as there are too many ankle diving tackle attempts on the edge, and we miss Blake Countess....a lot.
I agree Countess is good and the loss of him sucks but why do a lot of people have no faith in Avery, he will be fine.
Remember when he sealed the game for us against Ohio last year, that was awesome.
We are going to miss Countess a lot against a team that doesn't even throw the ball? Get over it... He has shown he has good coverage skills, but other than that he is no different than avery..
Avery is also faster from what ive seen. We will probably need that more in making tackles on the edge
is awesome with the 2nd half changes, look at the Bama game, did well against them in the 2nd half.
So what happens if the D just dominates them, what will people say then?
same thing they are saying right now.
I can tell you for certain that at least 5 people will complain about the mods on the liveblog.
(I'm not a liveblog mod)
Damned mods won't post my insightful thoughts on how Borges should run Denard more!
I know my prediction is true because I've complained in the past myself. Of course, all they do is post my comment that complained about them not posting any of my comments. Those rascals!
They won't run as well without their starting center and I think we'll shred their D. M wins big.
will get his first completions and we will have a 100 yard rusher.
I am not worried about the D very much, save the lack of Countess. 38-16 Michigan
31-17. We will run the football alot in this game and it will go fast. I predict that the game is over before 6:35 PM EST.
Feels like a good M win, with some defensive failings that make people cringe. 34-17.
Can't believe no one has said... Norfleet gets his first TD on a kickoff return.
7-point game at the half, safeties bail us out of many missed tackles, freshmen get a lot of playing time on both sides of the ball and two bubble screens are ignored by Borges in the postgame presser.
Air Force- 21
Lloyd Brady gets a front row ticket from the Alumni office.
With depth concerns and AF as our opponent, one that Coach Hoke and his staff has loads of respect for, I don't see this staff running the score up on AF. I think we jump out early and end up getting second stringers out on the field. Because of this, the final score wont accurately reflect our teams performance.
- The fly overs will be sweet. Obviously...
- M won't let Alabama beat them twice and will play well or above average
- I think the offense starts off slow, but moves the ball in little chunks and scores on the first drive
- I think the defense starts slow, but gets a stop on the 2nd set of downs (AF won't score first)
- #47 goes to a freshman. Not sure who that will be.
- We will see a lot of power runs to bully AF's line and exploit the size advantage
- Denard will have a solid performance in the passing game. I expect him to throw for 65% or higher with a great downfield success rate
- Norfleet returns a kickoff passed the 50 yard line
- M wins 48-20
I'm kind of surprised no one is predicting us to break 50 points in this game. If we score on every offensive possesion we should be able to break 50. I guess it all depends on how early we are able to pull the starters. Assuming the D holds and we're blowing them out at the half like 35-10, I can see us not breaking 50 if the 2nd team struggles in the 2nd half. But if the D is missing assignments all day long and this turns in to a shootout, I can see a game that looks a lot like MACtion or the 2010 U of IL game in terms of final score if we have to keep in Denard through 3+ quarters. I think the D will hold though, so I'm predicting 52-21.
Only someone who hasn't watched DRob for 3+ years would think we are going to score on every possession. He'll throw at least one pick or fumble. I love the guy, but that's the reality. Also, AF runs the ball almost exclusively, meaning the clock is going to keep running which results in less possessions. AND, Hoke won't run it up even if he has the opportunity; too much respect for the academies. Only way we break 50 is if there are some defensive TDs.
I wouldn't be shocked if we break 50. ND hung 59 on them last year.
but, I wouldn't bet on it either. ND also allowed 550+ yds of offense and 33 pts. If we follow suit, watch out!
I was thinking that the offense would account for 6 TDs, special teams 1 on a Norfleet return, and we'd get a FG in there somewhere with my prediction, which is how I came up with 52 points. I don't think we'll get a D TD because of the tendency for AFA to not throw the ball, making a pick-6 very rare of an opportunity in this game, and fumble runbacks aren't all that common we're more likely to dive on a loose ball (though there was that one last year).
And for the record when I started watching U of M games religiously Brian Griese was the QB, so it's been well more than 3 years.
That wasn't what i meant. If you've watched DRob for his career you should know he is good for at least 1-2 turnover's a game. By the way, Dennis Franklin was the first QB I ever saw in a Michigan uniform.
I misunderstood the point you were trying to make, I thought you were calling me out as not a true M fan. My apologies for the misunderstanding and my earlier comment retracted.
I don't think Denard will have as many turnovers in this game, and if he does have one I think it'll be more likely to be a fumble than a pick. I think their secondary is undersized, and I also think he'll have more time to throw and less pressure than last week, so I think he'll make better throws. I can see a fumble on a running play though.
I also didn't take into account the fact of how much clock time would bleed off the clock from both teams running the ball like crazy as opposed to throwing, so I do think it is a possibility that we won't have that many posessions in this game, unless we score lightning fast on each one. I think you may be right, I think 50 points might be harder to reach than I imagined.
And wow, Dennis Franklin is way before my time, I wasn't even born yet then :-D The first Michigan game I saw on TV was the '94 Colorado game when I was 12, but as I was rooting on Colorado in those days (my mom's alma mater) I didn't know until later that Collins was QB then. I didn't become a Michigan fan until the following year (it's a long story that starts with that colorado game).
I predict a joyless victory. Not necessarily one that goes down to the last minute, but one where the other team gets a lot more plays from scrimmage and it's just frustrating as hell to watch. I'm thinking we just miss out on covering. 38-24. Something like that.
Modest success for Roundtree on the outside assuming AF's corners aren't as big and freakishly strong as Bama's. Another 100 yards for Gallon. Funchess gets his first catch.
M wins 42-10
Denard accounts for 4 TD's
#47 goes to Devin Funchess or Jarrod Wilson
I think Devin Gardner will have 100+ yards and 1 TD receiving.
1. Fitz for 125+ yards with a pair of scores
2. Denard does not factor heavily into the running game, but manages several 10+ yards.
(Reasoning behind this one is that our size advantage allows us to basically do to AF on the ground what Alabama did to us - grind it out on the ground - so no need to risk injury or show any new plays from Denard.)
3. Linebackers and D Line surprise many of us with a great game, causing an over-reaction to the positive side in these here parts.
4. Norfleet takes one to the house.
5. Bonus second Norfleet prediction: Once we are up big, Hoke gives him a few offensive snaps.
This is what I am thinking. Air Force could get a couple of scores giving DF a few shots at kick returns and his speed and quickness will be on display against a non-Alabama squad.
air force scores first and goes up 7-0, terrifying us all.
michigan scores 3 straight td's and goes into half up 21-10.
second half goes similar to the first, air force scores a meaningless td to make the score respectable at 38-17.
See: ND versus Navy, only Michigan is better, and playing in the home opener after an embarrasing loss. Domination.
Kovacs is awarded No. 47. Gardner makes at least three catches. We're all glad to have Fitz back as he runs for 100 yards in the first half. A sasquatch refs the game as a line judge and does a pretty darn good job.
I guess you didn't hear...
It didn't even make sense to try to make it look like there was a sasquatch near the highway, as they avoid motor traffic due their preference for bicycles (obviously).
I'm shocked—Shocked!—that alcohol would be suspected in the death of a man pretending to be Sasquatch.
I dunno. Last year they got beat by Notre Dame 59 - 33 but the game could have been closer than that had AF not turned it over twice. Some stats from that game -
(Thanks to ESPN)
Now we see the following -Air Force put up 363 rushing yards on Notre Dame. So with that in mind, let's compare our rushing defense last year versus Notre Dame's.
Total Yards - 1806 (ND) / 1712 (UM)
Yards per Game - 138.92 (ND) / 131.69 (UM)
Yards per Carry - 3.78 (ND) - 3.99 (UM)
Rushing TD - 8 (ND) / 14 (UM)
This kind of stuff plus Brian's pessimism will make me start drinking early Saturday.
EDIT: I had 34-23 Michigan in THE KNOWLEDGE CHALLENGE and am going to stick by that. We then club Umass like a baby seal and head to Notre Dame with a lot of questions.
Me = 0
Hooters = $75
(I live overseas and this'll be the only place with the game on)
Never knew that Hooter's was an international chain. What country?
I thought my nephew was negative! Michigan is not that bad. Alabama is Alabama. Biggest adjustments come after week1. It will show tomorrow.
Air Force 17
Rushing - Toussaint with 150 yards (2 TDs), Denard with 93 (1 TD)
Passing - Denard with 230 yards 3 TD passes; Bellomy 53 yards (1 TD)
I'm off to New Zealand for a NOLS semester course and I will be missing this game, along with every other game until the B1G championship game:( Predictions for the rest of the season: loss to Purdue/Northwestern, otherwise undefeated until then, D-Line comes together in a biiig way. Fitz has a more impressive season than Denard, Gallon is #1 reciever with Dileo contributing significantly as well. We whoop Notre Dame. Good luck to all and GO BLUE
Good luck out there... i'm sure there are opportunities to watch games online. I managed to watch the nebraska game last year in the comfort of my hotel room in Cork, Ireland.
win at home, say 45-17.
Devin Gardner will catch two TDs, Denard will rush for 150+.
Defense will have at least three takeaways.
UM - 45
Air Force - 17
Air Force scores on their first possession, but doesn't score again until the 4th quarter. Fitz and Denard both rush for over 100+ yards. Denard completes over 70% of his passes and throws for over 200 yards. Gallon and Gardner both have impressive games at WR. James Ross has a standout game at LB and moves into the starting lineup for UMass.
1) drive to AA 2) set up tailgate & have a beer 3) have a beer 4) open cheese and crackers & have a beer 5) grill food & have a beer 6) leave to go in with the band - take beer with me 7) finish last beer just before entering stadium 8) buy $4 "DB" water - cause I'm gonna lose my voice by halftime 9) celebrate 9th straight home victory for Coach Hoke ... uh probably with a beer !
Don'tcha just love a home football Saturday in Ann Arbor !
Air force 7
Fitz 200+ yds
Gardner 6 catches, 100+ yds
Denard 300+ total yds
Avery 1 int
Best case scenario: Mattison drafts up a masterful gameplan (which he will, because he's f-ing Greg Mattison) and the defense shuts Air Force down. They'll get at least 200 on the ground, but with not much to show for it. Meanwhile, Fitz runs wild for 150+ yds, Denard racks up 100 himself and 2-3 passing TDs. Michigan wins big 45-10.
Worst case scenario: This game turns into a shootout. The defense just can't effectively figure out a way to stop the triple option. This doesn't change anything with regards to how things are going to go on the offensive side of the ball. Denard and Fitz will put up big stats, but the game will come down to whoever is holding the ball last. Michigan wins 45-38. They'll be happy to be hosting UMass next week, but the team leaves the field with more questions than answers.
I detected a serious note of dejection in the press interviews with every player after the Alabama game. Even the coaches were more subdued than they were a year ago after the MSU loss.
I think Alabama took the confidence out of this team.
I know, they say they've all put it behind them, but these guys look and sound awfully shell-shocked. This game could be a lot closer than most are predicting, if not an upset.
Sorry. Team 133 looks and sounds like a team that just got the snot beat out of them, and it will take a while for them to regain their confidence.
Michigan 21, AF 20
Denard throws 2 picks. The running game is merely abysmal, as opposed to a complete catastrophe. The defense has a hard time stopping the triple option in the first half. The second half shows improvement, and somehow the team muscles through because Denard simply wills it.
I respect your opinion, and would love to wager against it. I will give you 7 pts instead of the 1 you predict. If I win, you just have to post something I write for you. Deal?
It's funny, I predict Michigan squeaks out a win, but that's not enough. People still get angry.
The team sounds flat, and looks depressed. If I'm wrong, that's OK. I'd prefer to be wrong!
I realize that 'Bama is a great team, perhaps the best in college football right now. But it was their first game, too. So I don't think the "our first game" excuse resonates.
Have it your way, if Michigan wins big, I'll be happy, you'll be happy, and that should be enough. Just being honest here.
Are you serious? I've seen several comments around the intervebs like this, some predicting us a 6-6 team now. What the hell is wrong with people? It was one game, the first game, of the season. Against one of the best college teams we will every play.
I think they'll come out flat as well, and end up not cracking 40. I think this team is still getting it's sea legs and is 1 O line injury from panic. The D will be undiciplined for the first half & give up 3 scores. Everything will improve in the 2nd half.
Final tally: Michigan 38 Air Force 24 and we'll all drink heavily to replace precious lost fluids from sweating this game out.
How do you think the game will go?
- Michigan will win by a 3-TD margin
Will the offense roll with Fitz's return?
- The offense will roll with or without Fitz. Our O-Line can move their little people and all of RB's have the talent to get around defenders. Denard will show off his improved arm, and we'll all feel a lot better. People will still bitch about Borges.
Will the defense get their technique back and be able to slow the triple option ground game?
- Yes and yes, depending on what you mean by "slow." I don't think AF will score more than 20 pts, but I still think they'll rack-up 200+ rushing yards, mabye even 250. So there will be some big plays, but the smaller field will make scoring tougher when they get in the red zone.
How many TDs will Denard have?
- 3 TDs. 1 rushing and 2 throwing. The RB's will acount for 2 more TDs. Bellomy will also toss a TD.
What freshman or former-QB-now-WR will shine?
- Both. Pipkins, Ross, Norfleet, and Darboh will make big impacts in this game. Gardner will have 4+ catches for 80+ yards and a TD.
Who gets #47?
- I am going to call an upset here and pick Fitz. However, the off-season indiscretion has me thinking that it might be Kovacs.
think Michigan will handle Air Force.. I'll say 48-10..I think/hope the defense will be much better this week..
41-24. Devin Gardner catches 2 TD's, Rum&Coke Toussaint rushes for 145 and 2 TD's, Denard rushes for 87 and a TD. Devin Smith doesn't make the trip. Taco Pants gets thrown to a little bit on 3rd and longs early on.
"rum&coke" toussaint? are you fucking serious? eat shit.
It will be ugly, sloppy, uninspiring. We will have multiple turnovers, including in the red zone. AF will have the ball very late in the game with a chance for a go-ahead score, but our D will finally squelch them.
We will not score less than 50. They will not score more than 17. Denard: 3 TDs, 0 INT, 85 yd rushing, 1 rush TD. Touissant: 2 rush TDs, 130 yd rushing. Defense will have a combined 12 TFL.
UM 56, AFA 17
Denard has three runs over 30 yards, scores two TDs, Fitz has at least two long runs and scores two and DG gets one. Norfleet may break one this week.
Both lines dominate, but AFA gets a couple of TDs against the backups.
I expect we will get above 40 but also give up 20+. Hopefully it isn't too tense in the 4th quarter.
Wish I was going to be there for the flyovers.
I predict that Michigan will come and play with emotion and something to prove. Whether or not this leads to some mistakes early on, I don't know. If there are, things may be a little closer than liked in the first half. We pull away in the second half as the offense starts to find a rhythm and their defense gets tired.
For our defense, they will give up some yards on some missed assignments, but will be solid overall. The game ends and we still have a lot of questions with Notre Dame two weeks away.
I don't really give a shit about the score; I just like watching M football
One thing I would like to see: Jake Ryan and Mario Ojemudia coming off the edges and knifing into the backfield together. That would be a sight to see.
