Michigan players cut from NFL

Today was the day when the NFL cut the roster down to 53 players. I just glanced through the lists, and the following Michigan guys were cut: There undoubtedly were more.

Eric Magnuson (Bills,) Jake Rudock (Dolphins,) Ben Braden (Jets,) Willie Henry (Ravens,) Kyle Kalis (Browns,) Karan Higdon (Texans,) Jake Ryan (Jaguars,) Taylor Lewan (Titans,) Dymonte Thomas (Broncos,) Juwann Bushell-Beatty (Cowboys,) Jehu Chesson (Redskins,) Ian Bunting (Bears,)

I'm sure there are guys I missed, but these were some of the names I recognized. A few observations.

  1. It is a cold hard business, and there are tons of guys who barely get a cup of coffee in the NFL. Guys that we cheer are cut quickly, with no sentimentality.
  2. I didn't categorize . . . some were waived, some were outright released, some injured, some suspended. I'm sure some guys will get another chance. For instance, I really suspect Willie Henry will land somewhere.
  3. I wonder if Karan Higdon should have stayed another year. Of course it is impossible to know. Still, he declared early, and at first glance, was it worth it?

I don't follow the NFL closely but I thought Jake Ryan was doing well with the Packers very recently.  I am surprised on two fronts - that he plays (played) for the Jaguars AND he was cut.  I may have a caveman mind but the NFL confuses me.

Lewan was not cut.  Ryan was not cut, he was placed on IR and can return after 6 games.  NFL teams are only allowed to do this with 2 players.  The biggest surprise here was Willie Henry.  Though I did see he played the 4th preseason game and that is never a good sign.  He should catch on somewhere.

Higdon did stay for another year, he said he would have left a year early had he gained another six rushing yards in 2017.  What he did do is sit out the Peach Bowl.

I really wanted Higdon to work out here in Houston. He just didn't do enough to separate himself from the pack and once the Texans traded for Hyde he was expendable. He should keep his phone close by though considering how quickly the RB's go down in Houston.

Rudock balled out the last preseason game. Played most of it, looked sharp and had something like 75% completion rate, 200+ yards on almost 8 YPA and a touchdown. Hopeful he along with some of the others will make practice squads.

Thanks for this. I hope this makes current M players realize how important it is to mature at M and stay to get bigger stronger faster.

It also is a reason why so many players value their college time and team more so than their pro team.
