Michigan Mt. Rushmore

Submitted by CarrIsMyHomeboy on
For one [presumably breathtakingly brilliant] reason or another, I hope, I've decided to introduce myself to this board by way of an exceptional indulgence in the inane and cliche. Killer. Here is a non-exhaustive list of Michigan Mt. Rushmore candidates: Tom Brady, Glen Rice, Charles Woodson, Marty Turco, Mike Cammalleri, Desmond Howard, Michael Phelps (weakly), Tom Harmon, Bo, Red, etc. Pick four.

As much as I love the fact that Brady is from Michigan, I still feel guilty using them together. Brady got the shaft while he was here with the whole Henson thing and was pretty solid I will give him that (His performance against Alabama was awesome), but I just think he Bledsoe never gets hurt do we love him as much then? That being said its hard for me to put him up there. Desmond Howard, Charles Woodson, Glen Rice, Bo

I don't see how you can leave out Yost. He's the George Washington. He laid the foundation, made it all possible. You also have to put Bo on there - you need someone with glasses and I'll always think of him with the shades on. Yes, the only reason I'm giving for Bo is the glasses. After that it's pretty tough. If you want to stick with just coaches, then I'd finish it with Lloyd Carr and Red Berenson. If you want to include athletes I don't know how you do it. I guess I'd go with Glenn Rice and Charles Woodson.

A "State of Michigan" Mount Rushmore might. A "University of Michigan" one needs Magic Johnson like it needs Woody Hayes. And in any case, I'd only consider Magic on a Rushmore for native Michiganders. If it were for what they did while in the state of Michigan, Magic's out in favor of Yzerman, Sanders, Cobb, and Howe.

Bo, Woodson, Harmon, Yost. That's it. Desmond was great for us, but Harmon was one of the best players ever at that time, and Woodson can claim to be one of, if not THE best college defensive player of all time. Plus, he won us a national title. I love Des, but in a contest between him and the other two Heisman winners, he loses every time.

Yost, Crisler, Bo I don't see how you could argue against those three. Hell, Michigan football history is broken up in eras defined by these coaches. Things fell off a bit at the end of each era, only to come back stronger with the rise of the next. In my mind, the last spot is up for grabs between Red Berenson and Don Canham, though Rodriguez may make a push if the Glorious Revolution does indeed come to fruition. I don't see how anyone could vote for any one player over these coaches, no matter the accolades (sp?). Each of these coaches have had far more impact on shaping the program than any player could.

"I don't see how anyone could vote for any one player over these coaches, no matter the accolades (sp?). Each of these coaches have had far more impact on shaping the program than any player could." Agree 100%, and only partly because you picked basically the same bunch I did. (Which is pretty much a result of the convergence of philosophies.) Woodson would be picked mainly for his achievements in one season. Four years is all a player gets. The best coaches get 20+. You pretty much have to make a separate Rushmore for players. Take away Woodson or Harmon and Michigan would still be Michigan - not so with the builders like Yost and Bo.

This one was easy. If only coaches: Red Berenson, Fielding Yost, Fritz Crisler, Bo. If only of players: Red Berenson, Tom Harmon, Charles Woodson, Brendan Morrison, ... possibly Gerald Ford too.

The real question is who would be on a Michigan Mt. Rushmore of members of the 2009 Offensive Line. Definitely Molk and Schilling, but I'm unsure about the other two.

Amadou Ba, Brenton Petway, Carson Butler, and Adam "Bar Pissin'" Stenavich I think they all pretty much speak for themselves and will ultimately stand the test of time, going down in Michigan lore one way or another...

The State: Bo Schembechler, Magic Johnson(...), Steve Yzerman, Gerald Ford (for reasons other than sports). The University of Michigan: Bo Schembechler (duh!), Fielding Yost, Charles Woodson, Glen Rice.
