Michigan Men's Tennis Coach leaving for Florida
Per the Michigan Daily twitter account:
So we've lost an excellent baseball coach to Clemson and an excellent tennis coach to Florida. Is the weather up here really that bad, or is it something else?
They call it winter term for a reason. The weather usually sucks until about a week before finals. The indoor tennis facility though is really nice.
That Florida NIL game is STRONG!
This feels like an ongoing issue for northern teams with sports like baseball, tennis, golf that really do favor warmer weather when that simply isn't the case outside for long stretches. It just sort of sucks but I'm also not really sure what UM can do about it.
It's less of an issue for tennis than a sport like baseball or softball. OSU made the national championship this year and has kept their coach, Ty Tucker. Not a great look for the AD on a day where they made a decent hire for swimming.
Ty Tucker was a 2 time All American playing at OSU & is in their HOF. It's not the same to keep him at OSU vs keeping Steinberg at Michigan. The tennis center is literally named after Tucker lol.
This might be the best retort I've ever seen on this board. I'd love to see it actually motivate people in the future to hold their uninformed opinions to themselves or spend some time digging to find some actual supporting evidence, but that's probably foolish to think so. Just the same, thank you for this gem!
The weather hasn't chased off the far more successful and longer-tenured coach of the women's team.
She's an exception
Warde knowing he's untouchable (for some reason).
+1 for the Mighty Ducks gif.
My sons watched those movies hundreds of times.
Warde isn't a has been. He is a never was.
Geez. Come on Warde.
What the hell Warde??!!
Sucks for the northern teams, etc. but Michigan has infinite money and should be splashing it to try to prevent this. Leaders and best my ass.
I'd like to know what our retention of successful coaches rate is compared to other schools. I swear we've lost at least 4-5 successful coaches since Warde has been here. Beilein, Bakich, Steinberg, the water polo coach. Then you have Hutchins retiring, and Harbaugh interviewing twice. The closest example I can think of is Florida losing Urban to health issues and Billy Donovan to the Thunder a decade ago.
Seriously? You're using Beilein (multiple reasons cited here repeatedly over the years, including the recruiting landscape), Hutchins, (retired after how many years loyally remaining here?), and Bakich (clearly a better baseball opportunity) as three of your four examples. And then your piece de resistance--Harbaugh, who is still here?? The fact that four coaches have left in a short window doesn't mean Manuel is automatically to blame.
I certainly am not defending Manuel. I have no idea how he is doing as an athletic director. However, this game of "Blame Manuel" every time something doesn't go our way is ridiculous and tired. Next time, please utilize some evidence that actually shows he is not doing his job.
aaaaand there it is. the inevitable and profoundly stupid citation of hutch’s retirement as a warde manuel / retention issue.
The weather sucks in Florida
Only until ya get to the beach.
Shout out to the tennis casuals blaming Warde for a tennis coach leaving for a far better opportunity.
Michigan had a far better season than Florida in mens tennis this year. Tennis can be played indoors or outdoors. It's not like golf, baseball, or softball at all. You can practice and play in January just fine in the indoor facility.
How'd Florida do last year though? How many times has Florida missed the NCAA tournament since 1991? Wow breaking news, tennis can be played indoors. The schools that play outdoors for most of their schedule are almost always the ones with a huge advantage when it comes tournament time. Only northern school to win an NCAA title is Illinois and that was 20 years ago. This isn't something you can debate away. Florida is a far better program than Michigan. Period.
The point is that our AD should be fighting to keep our coaches here. Offer more money than Florida. Offer more money than Clemson. Dont turn down facility upgrades for baseball like it was reported that Warde did and was a component of Bakich leaving. Why don't OSU, PSU or Notre Dame have as many coaches plucked away from them? Why don't we have a new contract for Harbaugh yet. What are we waiting for?
No, the point is that Florida is a top tennis program & Michigan historically is not. You tried saying there's no barrier to success because Michigan has an indoor facility. You're wrong on that point. Now you're saying just pay him more than florida!! Y'all always jump on here & throw around other people's money like you're the ones paying salaries as if every decision is that simple. Sometimes it's best to keep your mouth closed & your fingers still when you don't know what the heck you're talking about. Silence is golden. Comparing this situation to Harbaugh not having a new contract is laughable btw.
Thank you for this. Blaming Manuel for anything that doesn’t go our way is such a common and lazy take on this board. While it’s possible he may not have done everything he could to retain this coach, we simply don’t know. Reminds me of so many political takes: blame it on so-and-so because they’re in charge and not my guy. Absolutely zero evidence—but an opportunity to bitch that apparently many can’t pass up.
Why don't OSU, PSU or Notre Dame have as many coaches plucked away from them?
Because, for the most part, they aren’t as successful in the non-revenue sports as Michigan is. The same time Bakich was poached to Clemson, OSU fired their baseball coach for a lack of success.
Why don't we have a new contract for Harbaugh yet. What are we waiting for?
Didn’t we literally give him a new contract last summer? Is he not signed for multiple seasons already? Why exactly are you under the impression that we should be in a major rush to get an extension done? Obviously it’s not negatively impacting recruiting, so what’s the rush here?
I don’t like a lot of things that have happened under Warde. He’s been far from perfect. But I understand why you don’t pay a coach like Bakich when Clemson comes calling. It. Doesn’t. Make. Sense. To. Pay. Big. Money. For. A. Mid-Major. Program. To. Have. A. Middling. Coach. I understand you’re going to lose coaches to better programs. It happens. That’s not on Warde and it’s not as simple as “pay them more.”
You seem to have some personal vendetta against Warde for some reason and your criticisms of him border on irrational. Instead of focusing on the real issues of his tenure, you want to put blame on him for things like Beilein and Hutch RETIRING. Get a grip.
Because, for the most part, they aren’t as successful in the non-revenue sports as Michigan is. The same time Bakich was poached to Clemson, OSU fired their baseball coach for a lack of success.
Thank you, I love this so much. It's a lot like complaining "why does Michigan have so many more basketball players leave early for the NBA draft, 5 in three years under Howard, when other programs don't." It's because Michigan has recruited and/or developed much better NBA players!
Side note, Notre Dame had their FOOTBALL COACH, the most important job of all, plucked away from them just last year. Whether they tried that hard to keep him is irrelevant, as long as we're judging athletic directors on how many coaches they keep vs lose to other jobs.
And exactly how do you know Warde didn't attempt all those things? If you're tapped into the internal working of the AD, by all means spill the beans, otherwise you're assuming none of those happened based on........nothing.
There is a simple fact in warm weather college sports.....southern teams have an historic advantage in being able to practice and play outdoors much earlier than northern teams. Tennis has been played indoors for a long time and yet no northern schools have won an NCAA title outside of Illinois 20 some odd years ago. The advantage is in perception and recruiting AND the weather.
Also......people move, people want new challenges, new scenery, there may be other family factors involved with illnesses, etc., or....just plain old "tired of Michigan winters." The idea that Warde sits with complete control of all this and that the only thing that matters is waving a HUGE amount of $$ around every time a coach talks about leaving is ludicrous.
Not to mention......any AD that simply folds and writes blank checks to every coach interested in another job, quite simply, isn't doing their job very well. He's managing a business and I can guarantee you if he went and sprayed enough money to keep a coach there would be just as many people on here trying to crucify him for not being responsible.
Having coaches poached means you have staff that are in high demand and there is simply nothing to be done about some of them moving on beyond hiring bad coaches that aren't in high demand.
Warde's job here at this point is to go out and get another great coach to help assure the team doesn't take too much of a dip, hopefully getting a young up and comer that will stay a while and perhaps even elevate the program with time.
You have absolutely no idea how frequently osu and psu coaches who are good get poached in sports like baseball. You just come from a place that Michigan can be the best at everything and it’s unrealistic. Big ten baseball is the equivalent of the American conference in football. It’s a mid major.
Probably why Florida felt the need to have a different coach
Ugh, just what this world needs is another Florida Man
Came for the Warde comments from all the randoms who had no idea who this coach was or if the MTEN was any good before this post, but are undoubtedly going to bitch about it now.
As if a tennis coach leaving Michigan for Florida is somehow a weird thing.
I'm also trying to think of an AD who never loses a coach. I'll come back and edit if I find one.
I guess DeSantis's billboards in Michigan are working.

What happened to Florida coach Bryan Shelton, the father of rising new pro Ben Shelton?
He quit the Florida job to coach Ben full-time
If you take a look at coaches salaries, Michigan pays competitively with the top salaried coaches in the nation. (Not necessarily the absolute top)
But, how much is the department supposed to invest in a non revenue sport? There is already significant investment in the athletes scholarships. If a coach feels he/she can do better financially, who can blame them for betting on themselves.
I'm not sure what the salary raise would have been to keep Stienberg, but that would also set a precedence for other programs within the department. Also, having one less football game next year has to have played into the decision as well.
The Florida vacancy was created by their coach quitting to coach his son, 20-year-old world #35 Ben Shelton, full-time on the ATP tour
Everyone is leaving for Florida from around the country.
It’s the Desantis magnet.
I know more Michigan fans in Florida than any other state besides Michigan.
I think there are a bunch in Loony Toon California.
User Name does NOT check out.
Makes sense that you can’t even spell a cartoon correctly.
I’m curious: are you a willfully ignorant, grown man with a 13-year old’s mentality or simply just a 13-year old? While the messaging in your posts points to both of these stereotypes, your writing has me flummoxed.
All elite tennis prospects live in Florida. A friends kid is a tennis wiz at like 10 or so and they just moved down to FL to get him in one of the academies down there.
This. Good God, people, Florida is where tennis people from around the world go. Steinberg's leaving is not Warde's fault. It's not anyone's fault. Sometimes coaches move on to other opportunities ... and sometimes they move from other opportunities to Michigan!
Johnny Orr left for Iowa State. Bill Frieder left for Arizona State. Bo almost left for Texas A&M. It's part of the process. Chill.
(Also: Steinberg's wife's family is in south Florida, which presumably also factors in).
