#6 Michigan vs Ohio State

7:30pm Yost Ice Arena

No TV, BTN+

While (most likely) safely in the NCAA Tournament, Michigan needs help to win the Big Ten Championship. 1 pt behind Minnesota with 4 games left....winning out is the only realistic way they stand a chance to raise a banner for a B1G Regular Season Title...

Minnesota 1, Michigan State 1 in the first period as of this thread creation

Giving up 7 to OSU at home? This is why everyone has trouble believing in this team. I could see them winning it all but I sort of think they'll lose 8-5 in the opening round to some middling 3-seed

I meltdown and am hard on this team because I care. I remember when I used to to expect to win or expect a good, hard fought battle with great goaltending and good defense. Games that we'd win by scores of 3-2, not trail after one by. Wasn't that long ago.

Now it seems I'm just hoping we escape with a win, rather than go out and get one.

I wasn't like this in 2011-12, as I chalked it up to a slow start and it was apparently true as we eventually became a 1 seed and righted the ship (despite not winning a championship that year and losing in the first round).

After 2012-13, many people were pretty mad at the guys about the tourney streak ending and having a losing record. I was not as John Gibson bailed and we had unheralded true freshman goalies that I thought would improve as they aged. I figured the tournament streak would end eventually, and aw shucks, we hold the record streak.

It was the year after where I began to grow impatient. To be specific, it was the 4-0 loss at first-year-team PSU where I finally started voicing my displeasure. Lost to PSU twice more that year, missed the tournament a second straight season after getting out to a great start to the season and collapsing down the stretch.

I figured last year was it. Our offense was great. But the same problems plaguing us since Mel left were alive and well. Could've won both the B1G and B1G Tournament last year with just a win in the deal-closer game, but lost both and failed to make the tournament a third straight year, this time with two first rounders on the roster.

I'm not gonna disrespect Red and scream for him to be fired. Never have and never will. We may not even have hockey if he doesn't come in and turn that disaster around in the 80s. It was bad. They literally used to leave stacks of tickets at places on campus for games and it would be nothing but opposing team fans.

Thought he should've retired a couple years ago, but he's gonna finish this season and will ride off into the sunset. With a Frozen Four, God-willing.

As for tonight- complete debacle that has been going on for awhile now when we can not afford one. Minnesota doesn't deserve the B1G title and barring them disappearing mysteriously, they're gonna win it. Again.

We're now tied for 6th in PairWise. Sunday cannot be anything other than a win. Playing for seeding now.

Having a meltdown and caring are not mutually exclusive. They have nothing to do with each other.

It was one game. The inconsistency reared it's ugly head after a couple weekends where the offense and defense were gelling pretty well.

It's not one game. That has now become a meme.

3 games against OSU. 18 goals allowed. That's 6 goals per game.

They very well could've swept us at Yost as they led in the 3rd period, 5-3 back in January. And took a 3-0 lead in the first period of the first game that wound up being a tie.

A loss to MSU who was something like 1-15 in their last 16 coming into that game.

Two ties against 6-win Wisconsin.

I'm not asking for perfection. I could live with all the above if we just managed to win this game tonight. This was just saddening.

Your passion is noted, but man there is an entire world out there. At the end of the day it is a bunch of kids playing a game. Being upset is fine, meltdowns are just too much. Enjoy it, be upset over a loss, but hell.... don't live it. Just a suggestion, no offense meant by my comments.

I wouldn't call this a meltdown. Just a word I use rather easily without thinking about it.

I'm not the first fan to voice their displeasure on a message board and won't be the last.

I love these guys and it sucks seeing these recurring problems arise that prevent them from doing what we all know they're capable of. I will never get over that 2011 NCAA Championship game. I think about it maybe once a week.

Hockey was all we had when Football took the plunge in the late 2000s and MBB was just starting to slowly rise from the ashes. Carried the department, in terms of winning among the "Big 3". That's why it hurts seeing things the way the are now.

The team made the tournament every year of my life until 2012-13. Think about that.

Nothing good comes from me posting during games. I'm gonna go back to just saying a few words after games in the thread. No need for me to keep rehashing the same old tired shit.

To solve the mystery for others asking: I did the stupid winky faces after goals because I did that back in January when we tied MSU 1-1 and then went on to win 9-2.

Your last statement proves my point. If we would have just won, you wouldn't be freaking out. What happens if we win 5-0 tomorrow? It won't change the overall feeling. We know we have good offense, bad defense and a suitable goaltender. Tonight shouldn't have been a huge surprise.

................

Going down 6-2 to the 4th place team in the league is kind of surprising given the defense played well last weekend against a semi-decent team.

I'd be stunned if Michigan even got close to shutting out this OSU team. And if we do somehow do that, all the more disappointed I would be about today as it would've been another blown opportunity.

If wishes were fishes, sure. But just holding on in the final 20 seconds against UW and OSU and no disaster tonight and we're in first place.

Winning the conference regular season is important to me. More than the conference tournament, definitely. And it burns me that we have the guns to do it and some undeserving punks are going to win it again.

What is our average goals allowed this year? We had a few solid defensive games in a row. That's it. We've been leaking them all season so not sure why having a bad defensive game against an inferior team is surprising considering the context of this season and the past few.

but it's our 5th loss/tie to the bottom 3 big ten teams this season. One or two might be a fluke but 5 to those dreadful teams that Minnesota went 9-0 against? The past few years it's been sacriligious to question the hockey teams direction due to the turnaround in the 90s but every year we underachieve. Eventually you have to make a change.

We've known for a while that Red was probably going to step aside start this season. No reason for meltdown. He's not leaving today. He's gonna leave on his own terms. The meltdowns and freak outs aren't going to speed things up. Not sure why anyone is surprised by frustrating results against inferior teams. That's been the norm for a while.

From a serious Michigan hockey fan for over 25 years, your post deserves more than an upvote. You weren't melting down about one game.  It's the frustration of seeing the same thing for 4 years now.  Having more talent that almost every team in college hockey, yet losing to really bad teams every year.  It's looking great at times, then losing every big game.  Seeing a lack of effort cost us multiple games every year.  After watching them be the best program in college hockey for a long stretch of time, it's been hard to watch them the past four years.

Basically the same record as us with half the talent. The job he's done in Houghton is nothing short kf remarkable and his departure is almost certainly why Michigan Hockey has gotten a hell of a lot shakier these last few years

We went completely flat in the second period. Does Racine take most of the heat on this one. It sure appeared that way last night. Too many easy goals.
