Michigan Hockey picks up 2 transfers and 20 year old freshman

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Something we haven't seen in a very long time.

Michigan Hockey will welcome transfers in. Two of them.

The first is Luke Morgan, a sophomore-to-be from Lake Superior State. He's a 5-11, 190 forward from Brighton.

Luke scored a goal in LSSU's win at Yost over Michigan last season. He will have to sit out the 2017-18 season due to transfer rules.

A player who will not have to sit out is grad transfer Alex Roos from Colorado College. Roos is 5-9 and 171 according to CC's website.

He had 15 career goals in 3 years at CC, including 10 his freshman season. His production dropped off the last two years which featured a -20 last season, but CC won a combined 14 games in the last two seasons.

Mel also added another freshman into the fold with Jack Becker who hails from Dellwood, MN. He's a 2015 Bruins draft pick and is a 20 year old freshman.

Becker is the first Minnesotan on the roster in over a decade. That's pretty crazy to me.

We knew we would see an uptick in older players coming in, but I didn't expect it to happen immediately.

I don't have a transfers section in my records because of how little roster info is out there historically, but going through a quick search on Bentley's rosters, these two transfers might be the first ones since LJ Scarpace (WMU) back in 1999-00.

Last scholarship player from Minnesota was Josh Langfeld. Third strong walk-on goalie Mike Mayhew was from Minnesota and Jack Johnson sometimes listed Faribault(home of Shattuck-St. Mary's) as one of three or four different places he was from.

The mostt recent transfer was Morgan Ward, who spent two years at Army before playing for Michigan 2005-2007.

EDIT: Actually, defenseman Adam Dunlap played three games for Michigan in 05-06 and is both from Minnesota and a transfer after starting his career at BU.

I guess I didn't realize till now they we almost never got any transfers. Not sure how good Roos is, but it seems like we'll need all the help we can get this season

So last year's regular 12 forwards were Allen, Calderone, Dancs, Kile, Lockwood, Marody, C Martin, Sanchez, Shuart, Slaker, Warren, and Winborg.  Allen and Shuart are out of eligibility, and Kile left early.  So that leaves 9 returning from last season, plus we will see Josh Norris and Michael Pastujov from this year's Freshman class.

Those 11 are obvious regulars, and 1 more 3rd/4th liner from among Dakota Raabe, Jack Becker, Alex Roos, and Nick Pastujov.

Last year's 6 d-men were Boka, Cecconi, DeJong, Luce, L Martin, and Piazza.  I think only DeJong is not returning, and incoming Freshman Quinn Hughes will likely pick up his missing minutes.

Lavigne & LaFontaine will split the goaltending minutes.

I spent some time on LSSU's campus, many, many years ago. I would transfer too. When I was there, the female dorm was called the "Virgin Vault" and I met several women who chewed tobacco.

Minnesota, for hockey, seems like the kind of black hole Louisiana is for football.

I was talking to a Minnesota fan at the Frozen Four in St. Paul in '02 and he said the Minnesota team was unusual that year, in that it actually had one guy on it that wasn't from Minnesota. That guy was from Grand Forks, ND.

And Minny won it all that year.
