Michigan game preview from TheOnlyColors
TheOnlyColors' preview of the Michigan game is up. As much as we love to mock RCMB, I actually enjoy TOC's content as it tends to be fairly well written and very level headed. (The comment sections there are also significantly less RCMB-like). They know they gon die

So good
October 26th, 2016 at 1:28 PM ^
They did that themselves, and need absolutely no help from us.
I imagine quite a few Sparty No moments on Saturday. And any semblance of competent football from us will turn this game into a blood orgy.
October 26th, 2016 at 12:59 PM ^
On RCMB today, a nickname for this year's game: #2 vs #2 (poop emoji).
October 26th, 2016 at 1:02 PM ^
NO.
I will not even mention specifically why this nickname is a bad idea, but there was once something similar to that nickname for a game a long time ago.
NO.

You must be the grumpiest college student ever. That is a funny line. Find something else in your life besides Michigan. Get some perspective. Come up for air. I hate being the voice of reason but it has to be done since Ricky from Sunnyvale isn't around anymore.
Are you talking about #1 vs No One? What does that have to do with 2016?
October 26th, 2016 at 1:10 PM ^
I'm not saying it's not clever, I'm saying there was a name for a game a long time ago in this series similar and it didn't end well.
October 26th, 2016 at 1:17 PM ^
I know! The outcome of that old game TOTALLY plays a part in the way this game is going to go. As fans, we better not lose focus on the 2016 version.
October 26th, 2016 at 1:18 PM ^
I understand your superstition, but that "No one" team finished 8-3-1 and #16 in the country.

Beat State WD.
Stop worrying about game nicknames and past outcomes. You need to focus man come on!
October 26th, 2016 at 2:13 PM ^
Once, I was at a game of based-ball. And the pitcher man was doing the no-hitter. I didn't say anything out loud so as not to ruin it, but one man from the other squad did the hitting anyways. I suspect a coincidence happened, but surely it's possible one of the other patrons in attendance ruined it for everyone by not keeping quiet.

I was at that game. You may remember me. I was the gentleman wearing a baseball cap.

I like it. Number two vs number poo. It rhymes so you know it is good.

The Only Colors is a pathetic college sports publication.
They haven't been posting a single story or any coverage whatsoever after their last several losses. Not one acknowledgement of the fact the games ever even happened.
I've never seen a college sports publication with so little loyalty.
October 26th, 2016 at 1:04 PM ^
Oh I'm well aware they've all basically thrown in the towel at this point, but when they do work up the courage to write about MSU football it does tend to be a step up from the usual drivel you get from RCMB or the State News
October 26th, 2016 at 1:08 PM ^
is actually usually pretty good. Not nearly as good as the content on this blog, but better than your average college sports blog. Two things to remember. First, it is primarily a Michigan State basketball blog more so than football. The focus was almost exclusvely on basketball before the football team became more relevant. Now it is more balanced but hoops still gets top billing. Second, they (Sparty writers, fans, coaches) seriously did not see this coming at all. This was not a Brady Hoke scenario where we eventually just assumed we were going to suck so we were prepared to write and read things about us sucking. They just woke up one day and sucked without any real warning. I don't think they are "ducking it," I just seriously don't think they have the first clue what to write right now.
October 26th, 2016 at 3:07 PM ^
You would think that would give them more to write.
If Purdue football blogs can continue to pump out content after all these years, State should be able to not throw in the towel as soon as things go south.
Sure, the content is fine, but it doesn't mean they aren't sorry excuses for "fans".
October 26th, 2016 at 1:18 PM ^
Well, that's MSU football fan for you. They care only when their team is good.
October 26th, 2016 at 1:53 PM ^
By the way, I hear the basketball team had a practice at Crisler last night. Do we still have Tim Hardaway?
October 26th, 2016 at 5:17 PM ^
Anyone else getting sick of this:
If they aren’t able to do those things, don’t expect any mercy from Harbaugh. If you think he’s going to take his foot off the gas — especially after what happened last year — you clearly missedthis year’s Michigan-Rutgers "game".
I'm so tired of this Harbaugh runs up the score narrative. How is it Harbaugh's fault if he takes the starters out early in the third quarter and the back ups keep up the scoring pace? What do people expect the players to do not try or kneel on every snap? FFS

Generally, in life, it's best to let outraged excuse-making self-pitying 'victims' self-pity in the corner by themselves, rather than waste your breath pointing out the flaws of their logic.
October 26th, 2016 at 1:00 PM ^
Don't forget, every TOC contributor to their preseason prediction roundtable predicted MSU victory on Saturday.
I know I haven't.
October 26th, 2016 at 1:10 PM ^
One of those contributors predicted 12-0 and provided this gem:
"2016 highlight will be: As much as I want to say “beating Michigan...again” it will be old news and 8 out of 9 years is not a highlight, it is old hat. The highlight will be winning the first round of the college football playoffs against Clemson and the re-match against Alabama in the National Title game."

How do I insert that crying from laughter emoji here?
This'll do

"People like to throw the word "elite" around, but in this case, it's warranted. MSU has been the most dominant team in the Big Ten since 2010, despite an Ohio State National Championship thrown in the mix. They have proved time and time again that even with massive roster turnover, they're able to perform. Remember how worried we were when Kirk Cousins & Co. left East Lansing? Look how that turned out. An elite program doesn't have bad seasons. Dantonio and Mark Hollis have built an s̶y̶s̶t̶e̶m̶ empire that is built to churn out new polished talent each year."
Elite programs don't have bad seasons...

exactly predicted the score of the Maryland-MSU game. So I'll go with 49-7, sure...
October 26th, 2016 at 1:09 PM ^
If your quarterback can stay upright long enough to get a pass off, they have the pleasure of taking on Channing Stribling and/or Jourdan Lewis, who might be the best corner in all the land. How delightful.
The "How delightful" is really the money part of the quote.
October 26th, 2016 at 2:45 PM ^
Theoretically, MSU should try and exploit how much UM likes to blitz with short passes to the areas vacated by the blitzers but asking Lewerke to read and react to a complex defense like Michigan’s this early in his career is like asking a 3rd grader to take the SAT. Tyler O’Connor is a "better" bet for MSU’s slim chances, assuming he can play.
October 26th, 2016 at 1:12 PM ^
It is a fun read. Spoiler alert: 49-7
October 26th, 2016 at 1:20 PM ^
The Only Colors. Tyler O'Connor. TOC. Coincidence? You be the judge.
October 26th, 2016 at 1:25 PM ^
The inverse is true about the Spartans. Sure, this is a rivalry game which counts for something, but they rank between the 60’s and 80’s in all relevant major statistical team categories and couldn’t hang with Indiana, BYU, Northwestern or Maryland. Remove the wins against MSU and those teams have a combined 12-13 record.
You know, I didn't even really think about the combined record stats for their last four opponents (or if you prefer, "A Month Of Misery), but woof.....
Yeah, I am pretty confident that a Michigan team running on all cylinders can make quick work of this MSU team.
October 26th, 2016 at 1:29 PM ^
Well-written and based in reality - two things I never thought I'd say about a Spartan. Hope the score comes true and both teams finish the game totally healthy.

That the guarding against a painful loss is strong in East Lansing. Good, let that fear flow through your body, soul, and program. Spartans have been very quiet this year, and this preview encapsulates what they're all thinking (sober).
October 26th, 2016 at 1:34 PM ^
MSU hasn’t been able to come up with an effective game plan outside of one game —really, one half — against Notre Dame, so it’s impossible to say what they could realistically be prepared to deploy here.
October 26th, 2016 at 1:31 PM ^
Not a bad write-up but, (while I'm no expert) they said this about Butt which I haven't heard: "He's also a great blocker in the run game".
October 26th, 2016 at 1:54 PM ^
Was just about to mention that! I think he got carried away a bit in all the superlatives.
October 26th, 2016 at 2:20 PM ^
I thought the same thing. However, he's improved much in that category, and isn't a liability as he has been in the past. Good, not great.
October 26th, 2016 at 3:07 PM ^
Compared to what they watch every Saturday, Butt looks like an NFL pro bowl left tackle.
October 26th, 2016 at 1:36 PM ^
Please, it'll be 49-7 heading into halftime.
October 26th, 2016 at 1:40 PM ^
Nice to read through the raw viscera and unfiltered cynicism from an opponent's perspective for a change. Reminded me of the 2008 Michigan game previews. Weird.
I didn't find much to disagree with except perhaps the predicted score.
I think MSU gets into FG range a couple of times on Saturday and probably hits either TE Joshua Price or WR RJ Shelton for a touchdown pass.
I think LJ Scott is in for a bad day however.
I can't wait to see how Michigan's defense takes on MSU rushing attack, and cover Spartan's star WRs RJ Shelton-12 and Donnie Corley-9.
October 26th, 2016 at 1:42 PM ^
Good write up but the score prediction is wrong. Harbaugh goes for 2 to get to 50 points.
October 26th, 2016 at 1:44 PM ^
Some of the people on that board actually think they have a chance. That's not just delusional, that's "Bill Mitchell"-level delusional.
