Michigan Football Coaching Series

I haven't seen this posted here - Michigan has put together a coaching series for Championship Productions, a popular coaching site. Kinda pricey ($350) for the whole series, but it seems like many here (looking at you Magnus) might be interested in it. It looks pretty thorough, covering Offense, Defense, Punt and Strength & Conditioning. Here's a link:

When I first saw the title, I was thinking maybe a series of DVDs on notable coaches throughout Michigan's varsity sports, although I submit then that Brian Ellerbe's segment would be called "The Sound Of One Hand Clapping", followed up by Tommy Amaker's "Nothing Grows Here".

LOL. I've bought several things from Championship Productions before, but they generally mark up their DVDs and such. It's cheaper to get the DVDs at some of the clinics I go to, as long as they have the right vendors there. One nice thing about Championship Productions is if you buy the DVDs, you can also get the rights to stream the videos from their website and app.

I've sat at the doctor's office or auto mechanic and just streamed coaching videos via their app while I'm waiting.

I've never bought any videos from Warinner, Harbaugh, etc. Their stuff doesn't translate very well to what we've run in high school, which has been mostly Wing T, spread option, 4-4 (a.k.a. 4-2-5), and 3-4 over the years.

Oh, and sometimes if you contact the individual coaches, you can get them cheaper, too. You don't usually get the streaming option, and it's tough to contact Harbaugh and other big-time college coaches, but high school coaches hawking DVDs are generally pretty responsive if you contact them and want to give them money.

They're not giving away any trade secrets with this stuff. It's often pretty basic stuff. You're paying for the name (Harbaugh, Leach, etc.). When it comes down to it, they're teaching inside zone, they're teaching progression on the Levels concept, etc. They've got some teaching points in there or some catchphrases, but they're not giving anything away that OSU and MSU haven't seen on film and/or taught to their own players already.

One nice thing about seeing high school coaches at clinics is that they'll often give their own terminology/audible calls, because there's only a slim chance that someone sitting in the room is on their schedule the next year.

Big college coaches, though, they don't give away the nitty-gritty details. In fact, some of them are pretty useless at a clinic. I saw an OL guy this past year from an FBS school, and a question was asked to him about how the offensive linemen determine who to block on inside zone. (It can be sort of a confusing thing, because it changes depending on the front, coverage, etc.). The guy was just like, "Yeah, we just teach 'em to work their double-team up to the next level."

"Okay, but how do they know who to double-team and work to?"

"We just rep it. Over and over again against every front."

That's how he ended that line of questioning. I can assure you there are much better answers to that question, and you don't need to write/give a dissertation to answer it. He just didn't want to answer it.

Personally, I've been playing/coaching long enough with so many coaches and seen so many clinics that I've heard/seen numerous different calls for the same thing. Now, I don't mean I'm a genius or anything, but I could give a nickname for a blocking scheme we used in 2009 that's totally different than the call we have for it in 2019. My point is that this guy has been coaching long enough to throw out a nickname, count system, coaching point, etc. that this particular FBS school doesn't even use anymore. You don't want to give away a trade secret to 100 coaches sitting in the room? That's fine, I get it. Call it something else, tweak it, and give the coaches at the clinic something to work with, rather than just skirting the question altogether.

Long story short: Harbaugh, Warinner, etc. aren't giving anything away on those DVDs. FBS coaches are too paranoid.
