Michigan 51, Mich St 19

No that's not the score of a potential basketball game... that's the shots on goal stats from tonight's GLI championship. Michigan won 5-1 and has seemed to now permanently broken the Jeff Lerg mystique. By reading the accounts of the game, it sounds as if it was a classic "Red got pissed off and unleashed the hounds" type of game with some posters claiming Michigan could have won 10-1 if not for some goal posts and some nifty work by Lerg. Seriously, Comley's gotta feel some heat now. Multiple guys left the team, no scoring threat what so ever (and I'm sorry, but you coach at Michigan St one of the power teams in NCAA hockey, and you can't get a legit scoring threat in the past two recruiting classes?). From a recruiting point of view, do you want to go play with Comley's group of Prison Shower Shiv'ing all-stars who goon up the ice from start to finish, or would you rather go play at a open offensive system like Michigan, pretty much any Hockey East team, or NoDak/Minn/WCHA-is-the-greatest-conference-in-the-history-of-mankind? Unless you're Zdeno Chara, I think you're choosing the latter (especially as Comley's history of pro success stories is kind of short). Hope this is the beginning of a second half run with HOOO-GAAAANNNNNN in net (come on Brian-- I'm waiting for my Sgt Schultz M-hockey tshirts), and GO BLUE!

from the standpoint of pairwise... a loss to the worst team in the nation would have been really devastating. unless we sweep Miami (NTM) we're out of the conf title running, but a split will solidify our resume for the NCAAs. swept == death.

ND and Miami have too big a lead, but a good second half will solidify the #3 seed, get us the first round CCHA bye, and a semifinals or finals appearance in the conference tourney should get us in the big dance, especially if Minnesota can get hot and win the WCHA. I feel a lot better with Hogan in net... he's not spectacular, but solid in a Josh Blackburn sort of way...

Sure, we're probably out of the running for the regular season conference title, but, if we can get hot right now, get a first round bye, we can definitely win a game in Detroit in March, which should get us into the NCAA tournament, if not two, which WILL get us into the NCAA tournament.

- if the puck had gone our way a little more we easily could have put in 3 or 4 more. carl had a chance at an empty net and there were several times were lerg was way way out of position and we just couldn't get it setup - on jeff lerg, if state didn't have lerg they would be absolutely terrible. as if they aren't bad enough with no signs of an offense on their team and a weak D. but if you replace lerg with an average college goalie we score 10 goals at least - and that call on carl that led to the 5 on 3 was just dumb. the ref was like 5 feet away and couldn't make the right call
