Michigan up to 3rd in SP+
OSU slips to 2nd after being on top most of the season. For reference, UM has been 6-8 points behind OSU by this metric most of the year and is now just 3 points back.

Getting outgained by Northwestern definitely leaves a mark.
November 6th, 2022 at 12:23 PM ^
Pete, not only outgained… the Wildcats were also stronger in first downs and time of possession.
I very much enjoyed seeing the line play in Evanston yesterday.

Did you see the play where a NU offensive lineman absolutely pancaked Tuimoloau of OSU. Priceless.
November 6th, 2022 at 12:18 PM ^
OSU slips into number 2, eh?

Such banal humor EYB.

Sustained. I’ll allow it, but we have to be carful with the shit jokes councilor

Poop! He means poop!

Was a cooler involved? Overflow? Spillage?
November 6th, 2022 at 1:04 PM ^
What a crappy joke. You really squeezed that out, didn't you?
November 6th, 2022 at 12:22 PM ^
Glad Bama is out of it. But, Georgia has become the next Bama and most likely for years to come.
OSU played poorly and I don't understand how a B1G team is constructed without taking running game into consideration.

OSU was born on third and long.
November 6th, 2022 at 12:52 PM ^
See the 'born on 3rd base' - Harbaugh
November 6th, 2022 at 1:00 PM ^
I get the joke, although it doesn't really make sense if you think about it. More appropriate to say that they were born in 3rd and short.
Basically, though, they have an SEC team.
November 6th, 2022 at 1:13 PM ^
more like big12. potent passing attack that can put up points quickly and a soft defense.
November 6th, 2022 at 3:20 PM ^
1. They were born on third base, baseball translated back to football = third down.
2. They have no running game, so they are either explosive pass so no third down needed, or get to 3rd down with some ground to cover due to incomplete, or short passes. Considering the horrendous weather in Evanston, poor damn CJ was far too often facing 3rd and long...and cold fingers.

Life, I have no problem with Georgia, they are a solid team. I do have issues which impact recruiting and visibility to potential players and multiple teams from one conference in a four team playoff.
I also take issue with the lack of objectivity in the CFP Selection process. The criteria used to identify the four teams is still quite unclear to me. Oh, a few aspects / criteria that are apparent include - if you’ve played well in prior seasons then your team gets the benefit of the doubt, if your school is named Alabama you get extra credit and recognition for just showing up, and it’s a beauty contest with Southern Belles.

The bias seemed obvious as I scanned national sites this morning. Most of it was clapping for Georgia, ND, & LSU, with Michigan barely mentioned beyond a they-won-but-were-behind-at-halftime.
November 6th, 2022 at 1:05 PM ^
It makes sense though, right?
They all have victories over top ten teams while we beat Rutgers. I would expect the press to pay more attention to wins most people are going to care about over a win that, frankly, only Michigan fans care about.
November 6th, 2022 at 1:40 PM ^
A bias that results from one southern conference winning 12 of the last 16 national championships, with other southern schools winning 3 more.
If it’s a true bias, it’s rooted in reality.
November 6th, 2022 at 10:09 PM ^
…bias that results *in …

Indeed. The problem with UGA, as well, is they are basically a better Michigan.
They play an NFL (Harbaugh) style of play - complimentary football that leans on the running game and defense, then eventually break your back with explosive plays through the run or pass.
I enjoy watching them play, but it sucks because they are doing it with better athletes than UM. I do believe our O-line and Corum are a bit better than what they have, and even if we call the D-lines a push, their QB is better than JJ right now, and their defensive back seven and offensive skill players on the outside are better.
In this pass happy era of CFB it's nice to see that Harbaugh philosophy can work, it just sucks that there is a team out there that can seemingly do it better than us.
UGA doesn't look like the type of team that will fold due to a windy day or the team "catching the flu"

What about snow?
November 6th, 2022 at 1:35 PM ^
Snow is irrelevant to a team that will never play in it.

SP+ spreads for the remaining games (3 points for home field):
vs. Nebraska: -30.6
vs. Illinois: -20.1
@ OSU: +6.3
By comparison, last year after Week 10, Michigan was +5.2 vs OSU at home, and after Week 12, +5.3 vs OSU.
The best way to interpret this is "Michigan has improved enough over the last season that they've eaten up OSU's home field advantage."
At the moment, 2022 Michigan would be a 6.3 point favorite (!) over 2021 Week 10 Michigan on a neutral field. They've improved by 3.5 points on offense and 3 points on defense, although they've given back 0.2 points on special teams.
November 6th, 2022 at 1:09 PM ^
That's a genuinely interesting and meaningful stat. I'm guessing the punt block TD last night and the missed FGs probably are the biggest contributing factors into the special teams numbers.

Fancy rankings and human rankings are both slowly catching up to what our eyes have been telling all of us for a while. Georgia and Michigan are #1 & #2, and the rest are not at that level this particular season.
November 6th, 2022 at 1:47 PM ^
I have absolutely no idea why Alabama is ranked #4 per SP+. Their defense is suspect, their offense is limited if it isn't Bryce Young, and they struggle with kicking FGs despite hitting a long one last night. It's my general opinion that Georgia is the best team in the country and the rest of the SEC is pretty mid but nothing is more telling than the fact Alabama keeps getting love despite being 2-3 plays away from 5-4.
November 6th, 2022 at 2:02 PM ^
They’re also 2-3 plays from being 9-0. This ranking is purely statistical and data driven, so the reason they are #4 is that on a yards per play basis they are one of the best teams in the country (although clearly a tier below the top 3)
