The link rot spreads: GIF-hosting site Gfycat shutting down Sept. 1

Snap-owned service has little to say, other than save or delete your stuff. [Ars Technica link]

The demise of this internet site is relevant to our UFR interests.

Well, FUCK.

Reddit died for me.

The internet is not what it once was. Hell basically the only thing I use it for anymore is streaming shitty movies and arguing on mgoblog.

Oh this was about gyfcat well that sucks too.

I blame Bill

I must disagree. The ability to have anything home-delivered in a day is pretty extraordinary. Amazon Prime doesn't have a whole lot of shows, but they have a few really high quality ones; my picks are: Jack Ryan, Jack Reacher, Lord of the Rings, Wheel of Time, and Upload. As for reviews, at least four of the reviews are mine, and they are legit.

I'm sure services will pop up to replace pieces of what is being lost from, say, Twitter and Reddit dying but I always wondered about the business model for sites like Gfycat and I wonder if they have a replacement.

It's not "done for", nor will it be.  MySpace is still kicking around, FFS.

Its current trajectory is that of yet another site that took the path of least resistance, encouraged the wrong behavior, and is now actively driving away all but the worst sorts.  It'll settle into the cesspool of sites to avoid if you value your time and sanity.

Internet in general is getting nutty. TikTok is starting to become ridden with low-quality meme dumps from other sites.

Virginia is requiring photo ID to watch porn (linking faces with porn watching behavior could never be problematic, right?)

Use a VPN, folks.

Here's a hint.  Don't log out of your porn accounts in VA.  You'll be able to view your favorite porn until you have to log in again.  That's how it is working for some people I heard about.  Don't actually know them.  Just heard about it.  Honest.

Gotta self host stuff, you can't rely on services. If it's not on your server hard drive, it's not yours.

For years, I built up a cache of GIFs from sites other than this, and all that time I wondered why I committed to the extra work when there was a storehouse of these already. Now, it might come in handy.

It means years of UFRs with dead links. I don't have time to go back and fix all of that. It means I cannot search videos by play type or by player. It means that all of my x's and O's articles won't have the videos that inform them, or the ability to put plays in slow motion. When I talk about a concept and I want to link to the article about it that article is going to be mostly useless without the play that it was tied to. We are talking about hundreds of videos with no way to quickly replace them even if I found another place to upload them.

It's not just hosting, it's the service itself. Gfycat used mp4's (videos), not real gifs, so the quality was higher and they could include audio. On top of that, the videos were available in HD and SD and web optimized. So to replicate that would be quite difficult, and all that before you get into bandwidth and storage concerns, or complications of using a CDN.
