Men's Lacrosse 15, Detroit 6

Submitted by laxalum on

Anyone make it out the game tonight?  So frustrating that games in Oosterbaan aren't streamed or televised.  Sounds like the boys handled Detroit.  Beating the Titans isn't a huge win by any means, but for this young program to beat them that badly, especially a week after Detroit upset Ohio State, does make a statement.  First time they are 2-0 in their short history as a varsity team.

Looks like King went off.  6 goals and 2 assists.  And Schlosser had a pair of goals after scoring 4 last week.  Encouraging.  Second week in a row the team has dominated the second half, too.

All home games will be televised either on BTN or BTN+ per the U-M Lax Managers.

Look for most of if not all B1G games to be on BTN.

Seeing it in person really made me believe in this team. I wasn't sure if last week was a fluke since I only saw the score, but Michigan was clearly better today. This team is a significant step up from last year. We are dangerous on offense, and not just one or two middies but all 6 guys. Great ball movement, athletes able to reliably draw a slide and more stick skills than we've ever had. You will see quite a few pretty goals in the highlights. The defense looked markedly better too. 6 goals, but 1-2 were on EMO and a couple were just mental lapses on cuts near the crease. Our D middies and poles held up really well and often times didn't even have to slide. We are still young though, and haven't played top 20 teams yet, so I will be interested to see how those games go later this year. Face offs started well but then Detroit seemed to have an advantage. Consistency there will be important. This should be a fun year to watch this team grow!

Coach JP has said that our midfield is among the top in all of college lacrosse - that's impressive.

Handling Detroit after they beat Ohio State last week bodes well for our B1G success - I am still holding out hope that we can make the B1G tournament.

Huge test next week againt #2 Notre Dame.  Hooefully the terrible lighting and tight confines of Oosterbaan will give us some extra home field advantage.  If Notre Dame does't bring their best game and Logan gets hot we could have a contest on our hand (see our game versus Cornell last year - they were #4 and we took them to overtime in a midweek game).

Love what the team is showing us this year. Very excited for the rest of the year.  I am starting to believe that the future is now.

Oosterbaan is definitely an advantage, but since the lights were replaced a few years ago I'm always amazed at how bright it is in there compared to the old days.  Plus they painted the walls blue recently, which makes seeing the ball a lot easier than most indoor buildings (Penn State, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Ultimate where Detroit plays) that have white walls.

I may be wrong here, but I believe that Notre Dame practices and plays on a narrow field in Loftus as well, so the "tight confines" may not be such an advantage.  They definitely have a track around their indoor field, so the building is bigger, but I believe they play the football sidelines.

Completely agree that the early season success is encouraging, but Notre Dame is a whole different level.  Will be very interesting to see if the boys can hang.

Last time I was there (first varsity home game vs. Loyola in 2012 - we scored first, but they ended up doing pretty well that year) it looked the same as the last time before that I was there (which was a long time ago).  I just checked out the video on MgoblueTV and I see what you're saying about the blue walls being a good background for seeing balls.

So if there are video highlights, why couldn't they stream that feed? Not a great vantage point sometimes, but it would be like being there and it is better than nothing.  Just saying.

I've never been to their facility, so maybe IrishLax can let us know how Oosterbaan compares to Loftus.

I wish I could be there next weekend. Work hard and play your best boys.

There is not an overhead camera tower where you can shoot good video from.

They have a tower in one of the endzone for practices that coaches use for film, but that's it. Video feeds are unfortunately impossible unless you want wonky camera angles that would make you dizzy.

They had a student U crew do live audio against Cornell last year. Place was electric for that game, and Michigan nearly pulled it out losing in overtime against Cornell who at one point was ranked #2 last season.

ND better not come in and expect an easy win. Michigan is a dangerous team and they will beat a ranked team this year.

over nothing.  Same goes for the sideline/fan perspective.  Video of anything, from any angle, would be better than time-delay updates on score tracker.  I can take meds (or somthing) for the dizziness. I remember that audio from the Cornell game - let's get that for a non-TV game this year.  Who's got pull with the team?  Make it so number one.

Those cuts near the crease are a designed play by Detroit and they apparently ran it a lot last week against OSU. For those who didn't see it, a player runs down the right side  and passes it to the X. The X then cuts around the other side of the net, causing his defender and goalie to slide. At the same time, the original player is cutting toward the goal. When everyone slides, he passes it back to the original guy for a quick dump into the net. Detroit scored 2-3 times on that in the first half, but they only scored once in the second half.

For those who weren't there, Michigan got up 4-0 in less than 6 minutes. There was some back and forth scoring until about 1:30 left in the half when Detroit scored with a flag down to make it 8-5 and cause the EMO. Detroit then clamped Michigan's stick on the faceoff, which was their third penalty FO penalty in the half, causing the delay call. Michigan basically ran the clock out after that and took over in the second half. I don't think it was as lopsided as it appears in the second half, though. I think it was just a steady stream of back and forth action and the better athletes prevailed.

I have a hard time following the lax team, so if anytime they have a final and you want to post it just like you did, title, recap and all, and anyone wants to break your balls about it... I volunteer to head up the pecker slap squad zeroed in on that hater.

Solid work, thanks for the update/

This is why I call him the Hat Trick King.

Ian King scored the most goals and points in a single game in Michigan history with 6 goals and 8 points.

This team is going to beat a ranked team this year. Mark my words. Keep in mind, Detroit beat OSU last week.

Next week will be very, very interesting. Michigan is now .500 all-time in Oosterbaan Field House at 3-3 and took a ranked Cornell team to OT last year.

Michigan gets ND at Oosterbaan next Saturday. ND is currently ranked #2.

Shock the world. I'll be there. 1K strong. History will be made.

Was only able to follow on Twitter but beating Detroit by this margin is pretty decent for a program this young. I said last week we are a ways away from being with the big boys but Michigan is becoming a solid mid tier program faster than most, myself included. Congrats on the win boys.

I hate that I missed out on the lax revolution. It truy is an awesome game. I wish HS had offered it in the 70s when I was a young man.

I caught one game last year and will try for a couple more this season. Maybe ND next week if I can work it into my schedule.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the women got absolutely crushed by Florida, 21-0.  When I saw that game on the schedule early yesterday, I had a bad feeling about its result, and the 21-0 was worse than I expected.  UF is a young team (five or six years now, I think, in NCAA), but they have sky-rocketed to great success.  The U-M coach is a former assistant at UF, and so I hope we can experience the same trajectory of development the Gators have.

As for the men, this result is big.  Beating a team that beat OSU is a very positive sign, especially by a healthy margin.  The pieces are in place now to be successful this year.  We play Notre Dame next Saturday - the first big test of the season.  GO BLUE!!

Anyone know how hard it will be to get tickets? Thinking about coming up for the game but saw seating is only 1000 in Oosterbaan. It doesn't appear that this game will be broadcast anywhere?

From the game against Georgetown, I think Michigan has a strong chance to win. Notre Dame's offense is for real, but the goaltending is atrocious right now and that can be an Achilles' heel for any team. Faceoffs are a mixed bag and the midfield lines are also a bit funky, so this has high scoring upset written all over it.

Yep, I agree, you should be able to get tickets, but definitely plan on arriving early.  I was there 50 minutes early yesterday, and we got some of the last sideline seats.  There were seats behind the goals.

Game will not be televised.  The building is too small to put a camera up high.  An upset could be possible if this team gets hot and plays well, which they are capable of in that building.  Notre Dame is traditionally pretty good on defense and ball control, so I'm excited to see how we measure up.

Great info, hope I can make it to the game. I think it'll be very competetitive, this is clearly a very different Michigan team from the past few seasons when they were getting their feet wet. They really appear to be turning the corner. Quint put the Wolverines in his Top 20 this week: http://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/quint-s-top-20-michigan-marquette…

As for ND, this years' team appears to be almost a polar opposite of the type of team people came to expect year-in and year-out.  Suffocating defense, faceoff dominance, possession, and stellar goalie play were all Hallmarks of those teams that this squad doesn't have. This year the offense is potent with Kavanagh and Perkovic headlining a really top-to-bottom talented group. But the defense got worked by Georgetown, and the play in cage was terrible. ND was also sub-.500 at the X mainly because Ossello (who they're trying to use for instant offense) got dominated. So I'm expecting a 13-11 type game this week and I'm not sure who comes out on top.
