The McGuffie Scholarship Question

Submitted by jg2112 on
Here's my first post. Let me get this out of the way: GO BLUE. I have been keenly waiting (from Minneapolis) the results of the Sam McGuffie saga. I do have one question that I haven't yet seen the answer to, and I believe it's relevant based on what we've read from Coach Rodriguez this past weekend. As a hypothetical, let's imagine Sam decides against transferring back to Texas or Berkeley (or Sam Houston State). He then takes part in spring practice, but sustains another concussion. As a result, doctors were to decide he could no longer be cleared to play football. What would happen to Sam's scholarship at the U of M? Not, what would it mean to Michigan's scholarship numbers. Would he still have a scholarship? Could it be pulled? Thanks in advance. Oh, I almost forgot...GO BLUE. Jason P.S. If I'm violating any decorum in this post (style, form, etc.), please let me know. Thanks.

based on the situation with Antonio Bass is that you would keep him on scholarship so that he could get his degree but he WOULD NOT count on the 85 schollie limit. Hope that's what you were asking.

Yes, like Zia Combs who remained on medical scholorship and it did not count toward the 85. The better question is whether his decision to come back would impact the decision of a player like Mike Cox to transfer. I love the Guff, but right now -- all things considered -- I'd trade him for Mike Cox, the heir to Minor Rage.

[Not sure about Toussaint's running style, but he is a small guy. Cox is the only back size wise who is in the Minor mold. The following is from Brian's Mailbag:] Re: other redshirt freshman to make an impact: This one might be a little bit of a surprise: Mike Cox should play next year, and could find himself the RAGE heir apparent. The rest of the backs on the roster are going to be little darters; Cox is the only underclass running back who can fill the Minor/Grady role as a pounder. He wasn't a huge recruit but he could have slipped through the cracks due to his location (Avon Old Farms, a prep school better known for hockey) and a senior-year injury. Michigan did pick him over ND freshman Jonas Gray, basically, as both showed up at summer camp and it was Cox who emerged with a running back offer. (Gray was offered as an "athlete.")

Toussaint is 5'10, 185. By comparison, McGuffie was 6'0", 188, and Shaw was 6'0", 185 when they were being recruited. Brandon Minor was 6'1", 215 when he was recruited (listed about the same now). Just based on film, it doesn't look like Toussaint has a large frame waiting to be filled in (for instance, Minor seems significantly broader), so I would not classify Toussaint as a "Minor Rage" type player. That said, size doesn't completely account for running style - Hart ran between the tackles, and Shaw seems to show some ability to do the same.

Toussaint will be fine at running between the tackles. He's not that big, but he has a solid frame. While I can't see McGuffie's frame really filling out too much, I can see Toussaint ending up around 200-205 lbs. I don't think Toussaint will be a punishing runner like Minor, but he won't be strictly an outside runner, either.

He would get a medical scholarship and not count against the limit. I think his best option is to stay in school, see what the doctors say, if cleared move him to slot so he doesn't get hit as much. If he is not cleared, maybe run track and get a great education.
